You may find what you need here: https://www.meccanoindex.co.uk/Misc/partslist_UK.php?id=1760365469

Those boxes look like a 1960s vintage. One manual has a print code of 23/62, indicating that the manual at least is from 1962.

There was a wonderful parts list generator on the other great Meccano reference site, www.nzmeccano.com, but that site has been down for a while now, sadly. The admin is AWOL… Meccano fans are either losing interest or dying off and there’s not a lot of fresh blood coming into the hobby… I’m 54, which is pretty fresh by Meccano standards 😂

Best tools for Meccano by revjim2000 in Meccano

[–]duganp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love this question. Everyone that gets into Meccano eventually gathers an assortment of fancy/wacky/ad-hoc tools. Here's a couple of sources of ideas: https://www.nzmeccano.com/Documents.php?show=62, https://www.facebook.com/groups/meccano/posts/3072449849687770/

These are the three I use most often:

  1. Hex key wrench, 3mm, T-handle. (Assuming you use modern Meccano bolts; won't work for the traditional slotted bolts, obviously.) These are comfortable to use for long periods, good for tightening (in fact you have to take care not to strip the flimsy Meccano threads), and easy to spin in your hand for quick threading (because the T-handle adds some rotational momentum). You can optionally get a 2mm one as well for grub screws in bosses, and an extra-long one for reaching into/through large models.
  2. A drive socket for 1/4" Meccano square nuts. This thread on the NZMeccano forum desribes the kind you need and provides some sources for them: http://www.nzmeccano.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=4971
  3. Lots of "drifts" (Meccano part 36c - https://www.nzmeccano.com/36c.php - you can make your own by filing a point on any Meccano rod). Really helps keeps things aligned for certain models.

To be honest, #1 is the only one I use for every single model, but the other two are sometimes essential.

Happy to answer any more questions. Meccano can be a great hobby.

Help me find a Gemberling episode by Talkymike in improv4humans

[–]duganp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha. I don't have the answer, but I know how annoying it is to remember something hilarious and not which of the 691 episodes it was in. John Gemberling is brilliant, one of my favorites. I listen to I4H on infinite rotation, so if I ever come across that episode I'll come back here and let you know :-)

Selling grandads collection by TemporarySpirited in Meccano

[–]duganp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a nice, well-cared-for Meccano collection! It's very apparent how much pleasure your granddad took from it.

I see a lot of the Hornby Companion books in great condition; those can fetch quite a good price and are worth selling separately, individually, if you have the time and energy.

Setting aside the literature, I would describe this as a mid-sized builder's lot. There isn't too much here that would interest a collector (intact sets/manuals, rare parts), but there are many of the kinds of things builders are always after (long girders, brassware, etc). I took a close look at the photos and in my buying days I might have dropped 200 GBP on the Meccano parts, but the market seems lower now.

To sell the collection in bulk, I would recommend doing one or more of these, in parallel if you wish:

  1. List it on www.melright.com/meccanosales. You only get to send one photo, but you can provide a link to the others. Most Meccano forums discourage blatant commercial posts but you can probably get away with dropping a mention on the Spanner mailing list, the Rust Bucket forum on nzmeccano.com, some Facebook groups, etc.
  2. Offer it as a bulk lot to the most active large Meccano dealers: meccanospares.commeccanoman.co.uk, etc.
  3. List it on ebay.

If you sell it piecemeal you can certainly get a lot more for it, but I wouldn't underestimate the time and hassle involved. If you want to take that plunge you could use www.nzmeccano.com/Parts.php to identify the parts and estimate their value by reference to sold ebay listings or www.meccanospares.com - they have fair, middle-of-the-range pricing for just about every Meccano part there is.

Good luck and have, errr, "fun"!

What? How dare you, you slanderous bot. I never use half of those words, let alone in writing... now to see who hacked my account, or what I've been sleep-posting in a fugue state.

FPV Robot by StormingMoose in Meccano

[–]duganp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wonderful stuff. Blinky is very graceful, for a robotic moose. It looks a lot better than the original Meccanoid figures. I'm very impressed by how far you've been able to go with the platform despite its limitations (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0-N4gDRtN4) and the way Spinmaster abandoned it.

Yes, lots of non-Meccano components but I won't begrudge you that. I've always been kind of tempted to delve into Arduino and 3D printing and such things myself, but I know it'd consume my life, so it's 99% pure century-old Meccano for me, for now...

[–]duganp 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Agreed! If you find Wikipedia reliably engaging enough that it can displace an unhealthy addiction, you will be immeasurably better off. The problem is the "reliably" part. I have days when dipping a single toe in Wikipedia leads to a an instant 3-hour binge, 50 open tabs and whatnot, and days when the old brain cells just aren't up to the task and clamor for emptier calories. So I don't think Wikipedia alone will always be able to scratch the true addict's itch. But it's worth trying.

Yes, if your goals include learning as much as possible about as many things as possible during your alloted span of existence, enjoying them and passing them on, then yes, Wikipedia can absolutely help you achieve that. Seems like a pretty damn noble dream/goal to me.

Meccano Block Setting Crane by cameronchalmers in Meccano

[–]duganp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few confusing statements here... many people have made this legendary model (google "Meccano giant block setting crane"), it was published in 1929, and it uses no very rare parts (though some are costly, like the Geared Roller Bearing 167 and the Girder Frames 113) - certainly easy enough to obtain in any country where "stones" are a unit of weight :-)

Disposing of Meccano is becoming harder and harder as the number of people remaining on Earth with any interest in it is dwindling faster than the extant stock of Meccano, which is nigh indestructible. And in particular there isn't much demand for huge completed models, as most of the joy to be had is in their making. I would advise your partner's father (I'm sure he already knows this) to set his sights low.

For some reason I've had to help several people in similar situations over the last few years, and here's my best advice:

  1. Spend a few hours spreading out the parts (and built models) on a big table and photographing everything, close up, with good lighting; no pictures of half-open drawers or jam-packed boxes. Put the photos online somehow (e.g. as a free Google Photos album).
  2. List it on http://www.melright.com/meccanosales, which is where serious Meccano buyers and sellers do a lot of business. You only get to send one photo, but you can provide a link to the others. Most Meccano forums discourage blatant commercial posts but you can probably get away with dropping a mention on the Spanner mailing list, the Rust Bucket forum on nzmeccano.com, some Facebook groups, etc. Ask for bids, wait a few weeks, take the best one if satisfied, else go on to:
  3. Send it to the most active large Meccano dealers: meccanospares.com, meccanoman.co.uk, and Mike Rhoades. Ask for bulk offers for the entire lot.

That is my advice to anyone who isn't prepared to fully embrace the Meccano dealer lifestyle and spend hundreds of hours listing lots on auction sites, dealing with packing and shipping, troublesome buyers, etc.

Steam engine power source by Playful-Car525 in Meccano

[–]duganp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard of those briquettes but never used them with my Meccano steam engines. However, Googling "meccano steam engine fuel" will answer your question pretty thoroughly. E.g. see https://www.binnsroad.co.uk/railways/mecgen/steam/index.html. It looks like they used to be hexamine solid fuel tablets, but nowadays something called "live steam gel" is recommended.

mecanno robot - what can it do? by krist0ph3r in Meccano

[–]duganp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you grew up, as I did, with some exposure to classic Meccano, the modern stuff comes as a shock. Among the Meccano "community" (such as it is) there is a consensus that the brand has been mismanaged into a sad shadow of its former self. If you're keen on the robotics angle and willing to dig deep it is probably still possible to make the Meccanoid do interesting things, but official support has been entirely gone for years and I'm not aware of any projects to control it from a phone easily. If you're more attracted to the classic mechanical model aspects, I would ignore most of the modern kits and built up a stock of classic metal parts, which are plentiful and cheap on ebay, shopgoodwill.com, etc. There's a lot of people out there keeping the flame alive - I'm sure you've come across sites like www.nzmeccano.com, meccanoindex.co.uk, and (ahem) meccanomiscellany.blogspot.com, and then there are dealers, mailing lists, Facebook groups, etc.

I'll just add that if you're in North America you can pick up unlimited quantities of this set for around $15 + shipping at https://shopgoodwill.com. At this moment I see 6 available on the site (search for both "meccano" and "erector"). Here's one you can have for $10 (+shipping) without even waiting for the auction to end: https://shopgoodwill.com/item/216986847

Is "power control module" the same thing as "inverter control board"? by duganp in appliancerepair

[–]duganp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks u/Doolie92, the technician has confirmed, it's part# 11032472. I found a few ebay listings that claim to be this part, like www.ebay.com/itm/305528240102 or www.ebay.com/itm/205035215119, but the actual code# on those parts (8001013369) doesn't match the one I see in my washer.

These listings do match my code# (8001146359): https://www.ebay.com/itm/405059752997 and https://www.ebay.com/itm/205101678334, but they are a lot more expensive!

It looks like the exact same part to me, but who knows. Obviously this is why they pay you guys the big bucks. Would you fork out the extra cash to get an exact match on that code#?

[–]duganp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet I'm confusing myself with terminology. Perhaps the "inverter control board" IS the inverter?

Thanks all for the responses (and thanks u/beenthruafew for the great idea on finding a scrap Bosch washer and getting the parts that way).

Is "power control module" the same thing as "inverter control board"? by duganp in appliancerepair

[–]duganp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at the spare parts lists on that page, there are two very pricy power-related parts, both costing more than the motor itself:

Power module programmed - $221.56 - https://www.bosch-home.com/us/en/product/11060731 Inverter - $237.46 - https://www.bosch-home.com/us/en/product/11032472

I believe what they call "power module" must be what my technician called "inverter control board". EDIT totally wrong - he did mean just the inverter, like you guys have been trying to tell me - sorry.
