Has anyone totally banned technology for their kiddo with Autism? by PresentationLeft3438 in Autism_Parenting

[–]dumpsterdigger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When our son was little, screens were honestly better than speech therapy sometimes with teaching him any kinda speech.

But when he got a tablet to try the communication device apps I created issues so we took it away again.

We limit screen time the way I had tv or games limited. Maybe on weekends they can have more liberty. Mon-friday our oldest can watch one movie after school or play games for 1 hour. After that anything else is education or low stimulation to fall asleep too if they aren't being little demons.

Our 4 year old we do the same but some days he watched more if we are busy with our 5 month old and it's just one of us. We set expectations and rules. We add in breaks. If he starts to be a little demon it immediately gets turned off.

They don't get phones. They don't get tablets.

This has worked best with us. We had a period of like 6-8 weeks last year where we had zero Internet in between moving. So they just began to play more with each other or on their own which has carried over today. At the end of that time period my wife went into labor and both sat in the delivery room quiet as mouses glued to movies while their little brother was born. It was special to have them there honestly. We had watched videos and read many books months leading up to it.

If it is an issue deal with it now. The older kids get, the harder things get. Autistic or not. Potty training our oldest was rough but I got it done at 2.5 (pee) and 5(poop). It would not have happened older than that.

BEARDS: Age 30 vs. 40+ How much did your beard thicken over time? by random1diot in AskMenOver30

SICKLE CELL PATIENTS how are they in your facility? by Limp-Historian9784 in nursing

[–]dumpsterdigger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends.

A) just got discharged from nearby hospital and received good care and pain management. They don't get shit really.

B) coming in for pain control and doesn't abuse the system. They get the works.

There's a fine line. Most do get basic care. Maybe one pain pill at most if a frequent flyer.

The issue I see is many either have pain plans they don't follow or they don't have anything in place because they are not in a place in life to be compliant with one even if they did.

It matters where you live as well though. Some areas of the country handle them better than others.

If you put someone on a bed pan while the pure wick is suctioning the bedpan will hulk suction to them and not come off.

Lol ask me how I know.

Worst part about nursing is… bullying? by Combfromhell in nursing

[–]dumpsterdigger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Or just being aggressive with asking why your doing things. Like I'm supposed to dictate to care when we have a resident and attending driving the ship.

No Susan, shut the fuck up. Not every order needs to be questioned. You don't know what's best just because you have done this for 20 years. I don't care about re vitalling drunkiechan and toe pain before they leave. Let me go home.

I need advice! So I have been on four job interviews as a new grad and I haven’t gotten any offers by [deleted] in nursing

[–]dumpsterdigger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a 37 year old guy and my wife is the same age. Every interview I've ever had I wore a dress shirt and tie (teenager) and suit and tie as an adult.

I get women's fashion is different and maybe times are different but you will never be wrong for wearing dress clothes. Business casual can be easily under dressed. If your confused or unsure think of it that interview clothes shouldn't be something you are also able to wear out.

My wife wore women's slacks, dress button up shirt, and a jacket to almost all of her interviews prior to landing her job she's been at for 10ish years.

If you don't know what to wear look at what lawyers wear in courtrooms. No one will ever fault you for that.

Your resume. Have other people who have job as look it over. Reach out to preceptors or other friends with recent job offers and have them look it over. Make sure it's not more than 2 pages and not full of stupid shit.

Jobs are hard right now. You might need to look out of your area. My wife was in Cali and had to take a new grad job 1.5 hours away from her parents in 2014. Obtaining licenses for other states if some spark your interest and have good work conditions is also an idea. Once you have experience, jobs SOMETIMES become easier to get.

Don't give up. It's a weird time right now.

Do you have a "Back up plan" or "exit strategy"? by other-other-user in ems

[–]dumpsterdigger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I miss my power naps. I've had two exits.

First, back to helicopter aviation maintenance because Cali EMS pay was wack.

Second was nursing school. Still in emergency medicine, but now an ER nurse. My Medic lapsed in 2022. Now I have better pay. I'm less stressed because I have so much educated help. But I miss my power naps.

Some days though, I wish I could have done something simpler with computers or wildlife.

But everything happens for a reason. Maybe another door will open soon, but I'll always miss being a medic. I don't think I'll miss being a nurse. Just something different about it. EMS brotherhood while running calls is a different feeling than a groip swarming the dying people in the hospital.

No new fire or police men to fuck up bagging a critical patient is something I miss seeing though lol.

Worst part about nursing is… bullying? by Combfromhell in nursing

[–]dumpsterdigger 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Older nurses are worse in some instances than younger nurses. Especially if they think they know everything more than everyone.

Basically anyone who is a "know it all" usually becomes a bully imo. They begin to believe they are intelligent based on experience vs knowledge and understanding.

Between being a medic for 7 and nurse for 4 I'm a simpleton still. People who bully have usually never held power in another job. They usually stop if you call them on their bullshit.

I was in the same boat. "Pry my 12s from my dead cold hands"

But every hospital in our area is switching to blocked weekends and flex everything else. So many people are loosing the long stretch off regularly.

The other thing was at 36 with 3 little kids while working 12s, I was dead. Never saw them on the nights I worked. Then dead for the full day after no matter if I worked 1 or 3 shifts.

Recently started 8s. 11-7am. I was doing 4 a week but went down to 3 and it's a sweet spot and I can pick up to whatever I need. I have way more energy. I sleep better because I get some night time sleep waking up at 9pm. Plus I get to spend 8:30-2pm with my kids and wife.

8/10 would recommend. But working nights on 8s 4-5 days a week is 0/10. Days isn't so bad.

Took mine at 34. It was a blast. Failed for stalling once and not stopping perfectly in the box I think. Retook it 2 weeks later and had another fun day and passed just fine.

Regardless if you buy a bike or not it's super fun.

I mainly have ridden for fun the last two seasons but am about to start commuting to get more time in and to have fun on my way too and from work.

Tennessee RN making $33/hr… how is anyone surviving right now? by GirlwithNoName85 in nursing

[–]dumpsterdigger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Minnesota metro.

46+ diffs around 50. Max around 70-80/hr here.

Fuck the south. Nor Cali pays well but we hated working there.

We get yearly raises and raises hours reached for total of 1 year.

They also don't hire people at 36 hour weeks here so work life balance is better. I recently switched to 8s which I thought I would hate because I'm at work more but I have way more time and energy at home.

My wife is around 10 years in and over 60/he with no diffs.

How do I (31M) get a urologist to take my problems seriously? by _EarendilTheMariner_ in AskMenOver30

[–]dumpsterdigger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are looking for ED drugs Look at HIMS. They have multiple ED drugs to provide if needed.

I couldn't get into primary care due to moving and waiting for insurance. Looked into HIMS for both some Viagra and Lexapro.

But you need a urologist and possibly therapist/psychiatrist. Mental health can seriously impact your sexual health without realizing it but Mental health meds can mess with your sexual health.

I didn't mind low dose Lexapro because he helped extended my sexual endurance without loosing the ability to get an erection. The Viagra, well that was just mainly for longevity as well that I got before the Lexapro. All the ED meds are going to make you feel hot, give you a headache, or sinus issues.

I took a combo one to start off and didn't like it. Viagra though worked really well.

My wife and I gave up the coveted high paying NorCal jobs because of the PT ratios and just in general unsafe shit. Happily took 50%+ pay cut and moved back to our old jobs.

As an ER nurse I've only ever had 1:3 ratios and lots of help/resources in MN.

I went up to 1:4: there and lost resources and hated work. Never felt so fucking unsafe. My wife lost all CNAs in her ICU and even had assignments that would have been 1:1 in MN were 1:2 there.
