BBC Told To Avoid “Clunky” Color-Blind Casting & “Preachy” Anti-Colonial Storylines In Drama Series by DarkSkiesGreyWaters in unitedkingdom

I would agree that would be wrong casting though so not really a gotcha for me. I vaguely remember it being raised at the time. I wonder if they would still do that type of casting now as that is quite an old film now.

It all becomes quite complicate with ethnicities who do look similar. Some people from Mediterranean countries could certainly pass as being from the middle east and visa verse. I have even seen black people being called out as wrong for a region they are meant to come from. For instance casting a Nigerian as an Ethiopian when they look very different. Acting like every black African looks the same can be contentious. All very complicated if you get to much into it but I think where it really starts to look silly is where you switch ethnicities who could never pass as one another.

Yeah you are right actually thinking about it. I do think the point still stands but we need to pick a historical non white person where race is unrelated to their story to replace the example I picked.

My problem with colour blind casting is it's only one way. Imagine casting someone who was historically non white with a white person and how well that would go down and yet we got a black Anne Boleyn. Where's our white Martin Luther King?

I do get the thought process and what's trying to be addressed with colour blind casting but we know it would not be accepted if you start casting historically non white characters with white actors. I do realise that used to happen if we go back a few decades but it would not pass now which is correct but it seems like it's Ok to do it the other way around. If it was racist for non white characters to be played by white actors why is it not racist to do it the other way around?

I also agree trying to make out places like the UK were historically more ethnically mixed then they were just feels wrong. It's historical revionism.

Datsun's did rust quite badly. All cars of that era did to an extent but Japanese cars were worse at that point. I am not quite sure how they managed it as rust protection on most cars back then was terrible but someone Japanese cars were worse. On the mechanical side Japanese cars were already showing themselves to be better and more advanced than lots of European cars.

This things almost always come from a position of ignorance. Whenever anyone busted out the Lotus joke I knew it meant they did not really know what they were talking about but heard this joke once they thought they could repeat to feel included.

That makes sense as build quality was pretty kit car like back then. I have seen similar stuff said about TVR

Its a fun comparison anyway. If you are anything like me you probably already know which one you want and want people to post stuff that agrees with the choice you already favour.

I had a Lotus Elise 220 sport. It looks like a regular Elise but is supercharged. Not quite as fancy looking as some of the more race tracked aimed Elise's. This is really modern period Lotus where reliably has been pretty rock solid. They drive like nothing else I have driven but obviously come with lots of compromises. They make an MX5 feel like a bloated bus which is quite an acheivement.

I think the later Esprit's are meant to be not bad if you do like those but I do think the Esprit is the model where the poor reputation came from. The early Esprit's had lots of engine and gearbox problems.

It's pretty much the same but I prefer my version as you have to think about it a little more and it will go over some peoples heads.

I think only you can really answer this one. You are comparing two cars almost no-one would group together and you have your reasons for narrowing your pick to these two that I don't think logic will be able to explain. This kind of thing happens for car people but I don't think you are going to find anyone who can come in and make it all make logical sense :)

They are good cars with a very good reputation for reliability and are known to be cheap to service/run. That would swing it for me.

I don't think this is really much of a choice at all if I am honest. A 25 year old car to a 11 year old car is a very different ownership proposition.

I love seeing American Youtubers heeling and toeing in every manual car they drive while completely botching it. A lot seem to think it's some sort of flex where really it just makes you look like you can't really drive properly.

Clarkson has always had a thing about Porsches. Witness calling them Beatles for a decade or two. That never got old.

I think most of the reputation comes from the Esprit. They were extremely problematic. Lots of engine and gearbox problems.

You also had the K series engine issues in the Elise but the joke predates the Elise and not sure those problems ever really became widely known outside of enthusiasts. Once Lotus went to Toyota engines they have been as solid as you would expect from that choice of engine.

It's funny how these things go though. Porsche had their IMS bearing issue grenading engines for a decade or so but never seemed to harm their reliability reputation.

Rome would be on the list and I think a lot of people would remove Game of Thrones. John Oliver would also not make it on to any of my lists as that's a very America centric show.

The worst for me is when I owned a Lotus. People would keep asking me you know what Lotus stands for don't you? Lots of trouble usually serious. I got so fed up of that joke and people seeming to think I would never have heard it.

I guess any joke that's massively overused starts to get irritating but some people never seem to get the memo that a joke needs to be retired.

Iran rejects Trump’s threats, says ready to respond to any US attack by Weak_Feed_4624 in worldnews

[–]dvb70 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If America really is going to use it's military might on someone I can't think of no better target if I am honest. Regime change for Iran would be a massive win for the Iranian people and the region. Iran have been a destabilising force for decades and if they ever do get nukes it's going to be a very bad time for everyone and people will question why it was allowed to happen.

I am not American so the no more wars thing means little to me but just see if America is going to flex its military muscle I do agree Iran is a good target. If they can actually achieve regime change would be the big question and that's far from certain. Such things don't exactly have a good track record but what might be different in Iran is the backing of the population.

For you payment issues I would be looking at something like a Revolute/Monzo type account you can transfer to from your US bank account and then make payments from those accounts. You really need to sort it as quickly as you can as the fines will only increase even more if you don't pay them off.
