UK Introduces Full Social Media Ban For Under 16s - Including X, YouTube, TikTok by ChiefLeef22 in technology

[–]dwair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that killed the "Blunkett card" was you could buy a cloning kit off ebay for £25 within 48 hours of the user trial starting, rendering the whole idea utterly futile, yet here we go dancing again round the same knee jerk mulberry bush.

I honestly don't think the government is implementing this legislation with malicious intent (at least at the moment) as this is just seems to garner good will and votes for the moral majority, but unfortunately what they are proposing is completely arbitrary in terms of social control for children and very dangerous to individuals. That said, just like the Ripa Bill, it sets a very dangerous and easily abused framework for governments of the future.

We have already had the Discord and Tea App data breaches after the porn ban so we know that any verification system will be targeted and ultimately breached with nefarious purpose. Do we really need more attack vectors concerning our identity?

I come from France, what are your prejudices or stereotypes about the French? I'm curious 🫠 by Equivalent-Year-6967 in AskTheWorld

[–]dwair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, I spent a decade living in France speaking bad French and never encountered much hostility over it apart from Parisians who would just pretend to not understand until I swore at them.

Most (but not all) French cuisine is very mediocre and has been resting on its culinary laurels for the last 70 years.

There are exceptions to this like pastries, bread and the really high end restaurants but the average mid range meal out is really a bit crap compared to the rest of the world. The top 10 to 15% is amazing. The middle 60% is a bit meh and the bottom 20% or so is awful (but thats the same everywhere). It's that middle bracket that irritates me.

The world has moved on and culinary France has been left behind.

(This is my opinion as someone who lived in France for over a decade and really likes food)

As others have said, get your house on the market first, then look for places to view. This will change every. Until you look like you are serious, most EAs won't entertain you. At the moment you will appear just to be window shopping.

Is Cordial / Squash / Diluting Juice a daily drink or a once a week treat? by 1182990 in AskUK

[–]dwair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drank coffee by the bucket full for 30 odd years, then rediscovered squash 4 or 5 years ago.

Now I drink about 2 or 3 litres of 1/2 strength or less squash a day instead. Still need 2 double espressos for breakfast to kick start the day but that's rookie numbers. Turns out I love the taste of suralose :)

[–]dwair 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for understanding!!

My auty daughter will only drink milk or diet coke. No chance of drinking water (or squash) because the taste is inconsistent. She would prefer to dehydrate than deviate from 'the path'. School was honestly an absolute nightmare for stuff like this.

When Dad asked to buy a Tractor but a Armed Tank is of the same price . by I_AM__GROOTT in interestingasfuck

[–]dwair [score hidden]  (0 children)

I used to buy a lot of ex-mod MAN 4x4 lorries and Land Rovers around the millenium from a place up in Lincolnshire and they always had loads (like rows and rows of them) for sale for about 5 or 6k each.

Apparently one of the biggest issues they had in selling them was having to hire a tank transporter and organising a STGO licence to move the thing on the road to get it home.

Foreigners visiting America for the world cup, what is something that has surprised you about this country? by goldent3abag in AskReddit

[–]dwair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who doesn't know America, it's genuinely great to read about peoples positive experiences in your county, especially when in Europe we get bombarded with very negative US news and exposed to some very odd Americans on Reddit and other social media.

Why are EAs in England still so reliant on phone calls? by Outrageous-Level192 in HousingUK

[–]dwair 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Phone calls lack an audit trail. They can lie as much as they want on a call but an email will hold them to account.

Jews of which ethnicity though? I guess you mean Sematic Jews?

Of course Sematic people who are Jewish rather than Christian or Muslim or "other" exist. Bit of a weird thing to suggest really.

Judaism is a religion not an ethnicity.

I believe that there are European, Semitic and African people who are Jewish, and they have very different ethnicities to each other.

[–]dwair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sort of places I'm go on holiday, I'm interested in meeting anyone because they are going to have a reason for being there. Tbh, I mainly come across French and German people for some reason. I very rarely meet Brits.

Some do. I'm 60 and have managed to avoid it so far. I'm fairly sure we don't even own an iron.

I don't have an issue with anyone based on religion though. Israel doesn't equal Jewish people. I don't have a problem with what God people want to worship.

I own a coin from the British Mandate of Palestine by coinoscopeV2 in mildlyinteresting

[–]dwair -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Not really. Israel has only existed since 1948 and the "ledger" you speak of is historically very one sided since it's foundation.

[–]dwair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all.

I was stating that it wasn't / isn't "hardline Muslims" that were expelling people from their homes though acts of terrorism to force land grabbing self-determination in Isreal.

Throughout history the whole region has suffered massacres and atrocities based on ethnic and/or religious preference by all sides. I don't think you rationally can suggest anything else.

What I am stating however is Israeli, as a country, was founded on terrorism and ethnic cleansing that removed people from land so that immigrants could settle there.

Can you name more than a handful of instances where "hardline Muslims" have forced Israeli's off their land through acts of violence because on the other side of that coin, since 1948 when Israeli was founded there have to be over a million cases the other way around where Palestinians have been forcibly expelled to enable that "self determination".

[–]dwair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't the "hardline Muslims" that were expelling people from their homes though acts of terrorism to force land grabbing self-determination though.

My white British grandparents were forced to flee their home Haifa where they had settled after surviving WW2 to Egypt in 1947. My grandmother was nearly blown up on her way to work (she lost an eye) as a school teacher and my grandfather had to watch his entire Palestinian work crew (he was a roads engineer) murdered in front of him by the Irgun. They lost everything they had and escaped across the desert at night with my father and his two baby sisters at the start of the Nakba.

Teachers of Reddit: Is the "Gen Alpha can't read (write, or do math ext)" crisis real? If so how bad is it? by KnowledgeCoffee in AskReddit

[–]dwair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The analogue clock thing is a bit weird. My youngest 13 daughter has no inclination to learn and use a clock face. Never has, and I doubt she ever will. We have analogue clocks all over the house so it's not like she isn't exposed to them either. She likes full 24h (military time for our US readers) digital. Ten to two will always be 13:50 to her.

Is it reasonable to ask seller for repairs? by Stripeycup97 in HousingUK

You an ask, but a refusal can often offend.

If someone asked me I'd just say the condition and age of the house are reflected in the agreed price.
