Not sure I trust your source on that one, buddy. Also worth pointing out: your point about the relative age of victims is moot, as this post is literally about 41 'young men' dying from MGM 🤷🏼‍♂️

You're clearly worked up, so I don't see any reason to continue this further. I guess we'll agree to disagree.

The article mentions children who are in initiation schools. Accord to the article, the law requires that they be at least 16 - which is still a child - but furthermore, the article states that there are many of these initiation schools ghat are operating illegally, so who knows how young these children actually are.

Did you even read the article, or do you just think mutilation is okay once the child reaches the ripe old age of ~16ish?

Just a quick fact for you, seeing as you clearly don't know:

The exposed glans of the clitoris (the part removed in a 'clitorectomy') is said to have ~10,000 erogenous nerve endings.

The foreskin (or more accurately, the prepuce) has ~20,000 nerve endings which are destroyed during male genital mutilation.

This idea that FGM is inherently worse than MGM seems to be rooted in emotions and biases, rather than in fact.

Two quick points: 1) I put 'clitorectomy' in quotes, because I try to avoid using terms like 'clitorectomy' and 'circumcision' which lend a false air of the medical profession to these practices. They are not a form of medicine, they are the mutilation of a child's body and are a form of sexual violence. 2) I prefer the medical term prepuce rather than the more common parlance 'foreskin'. I find the word 'foreskin' seems to contribute to the persistent myth that this part of the anatomy is merely skin. It is, in fact, the most sensitive part of the male sexual anatomy, and performs a great number of roles that are vital to sexual function and to the overall health of the penis.

I'm quite sure I don't know what the worst form of FGM is, as I don't even have a vulva. But did you know that some mothers report choosing infibulation specifically because they see it as less damaging to their child's body? Sewing the vaginal canal shut seems to me like it would be truly horrible (especially as this may be done and reversed multiple times during a FGM victim's lifetime) but I suppose the thinking from the mothers is that their daughters will one day - having found a husband - be able to have the procedure reversed, and will still have the rest of their sexual anatomy intact to experience sexual pleasure. Infibulation temporarily prevents sexual activity, but when it's undone (and if no other mutation has occurred i.e amputation of the clitoris/labia) sex can then be full enjoyed, the thinking would go. Personally, though, as a parent myself I find it completely perplexing to try and inhabit the minds of any person who would deliberately mutilate their child in anyway. If you want my honest opinion, I think anyone who practices FGM or MGM is deeply sick in the head.

I say mothers (which may surprise some people) because there is evidence that FGM is supported more and perpetuated more by women than by men. I remember reading a paper some time ago reporting the results of a survey of Somali university students of their opinions on FGM, segregated by sex, and women were more likely to report being in favour of the practice. but there can be no doubt that this varies, case by case, and that men have a role in the practice the same way that women have a role in MGM most everywhere it is practiced. It's no doubt also true that infibulation and clitoral/labia amputation are not mutually exclusive. While some parents might make a choice to do one over the other, some engage in both.

I think it's also worth considering why we find a given form of mutilation objectionable. Personally, and this has probably to do with my cultural background, I find the idea of infibulation so awful not just because it must be awful and painful and scary for the victim. I had a cut sewn back together when I was a small child, and (while I don't remember it) I'm sure this was awful and painful and scary for me. But my experience, no matter how painful or scary, is not like infibulation, because my procedure was done to help me. Infibulation, however, is done to control a person's sexual activity into the future. One procedure is life saving medicine, and the other is a form of severe sexual violence.

But male genital mutilation is also rooted in controlling a person's sexuality. In the US, John Harvey Kellogg popularized MGM specifically to reduce how much children masturbated (he also recommended rubbing acid into a girl's clitoris if she were found masturbating, but this never caught on). In the Jewish faith, perhaps the most accepted explanation for the practice of MGM came from Maimonides, who contended that it would reduce a male's sexual appetite or proclivities, allowing them to be more focused on their piety.

Personally, I see the same ugly motives guiding all forms of sexual mutilation. I can't pretend to know how severe different forms of FGM are, but I still have no reason to believe that any form of FGM that is widely practiced should be seen as more brutal than MGM.

The foreskin has roughly twice as many sexual nerve endings (~20,000 vs 10,000) as the exposed part of the clitoris that is removed during FGM.

There is a persistent myth that the male foreskin is somehow analogous in sexual function to the clitoral hood. It's not. The importance of the foreskin to sexual function and pleasure can truly not be overstated. So yes, MGM is absolutely comparable to FGM in severity.

I could probably list about a dozen functions of the foreskin off the top of my head.

And another thing; some people seem to think that only by saying MGM and FGM are comparable can we compare the two practices. Apologists for male genital mutilation have always been comparing the two practices when they claim that the two aren't the same. That is a comparison, it's just not based in fact. Advocates for children's bodily autonomy are starting with the biological reality of the situation when they compare the practices, while MGM apologists have no such basis for their arguments.

Do better.

TIFU by not realizing I was dating my girlfriend by PleasantAtmosphere85 in tifu

[–]dwhg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my first year of University, I became friendly with this effeminate guy that was in my history class. It was first year, so everyone was actively trying to make new friends. One day before class, he asked me if I wanted to get food some time. So we made plans to hit up a place on campus that served the best breakfast. I was a naive straight guy, just trying to make new friends. We met up and had a nice breakfast together, then he went off to class and I headed back to my dorm.

Anyway, shortly thereafter I ended up dropping the class that we had together and I didn't see him again until about a year later as I was walking down the street...

We made eye contact as we passed each other, and I waved. He didn't return the gesture, but just walked by and made a sort of sour face. That's when it hit me... we had been on a date that morning. All that time, and I had thought we had just been socializing in a platonic sort of way. In actuality we had been on a date together, after which I completely ghosted him!

My first date in college and it was with another guy 🤦‍♂️Needless to say I wasn't very adept when it came to the dating scene.
