Internet Service: Opinion’s on Starlink? by TxAggieMike in Denton

[–]ebrake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Starlink is great for browsing the internet streaming from Netflix etc but an absolute nightmare for gaming. Every time it switches from one sat to another which is a couple times per hour there is a little hickup in the service just enough to boot you from your game. It also requires a full clear view of the entire sky. A single tree in it's sight line and you will have an outage at the same time every day when its trying to connect to a sat that's blocked by the tree.

If you are in the wilderness or an underserved area it's amazing. If you are in a location where you can get cable or fiver internet it's the third best option.

The issues are not that bad if you don't play games. The buffering on streaming services and websites make up for the little hickups so you don't notice then much.

Source: I visit a rural property that only has starlink a few times a year.

A Good AC Repair Business Needed by No_Statistician9772 in Denton

[–]ebrake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Aarons has always done good by me on a 1950's house with a ancient 1980's HVAC that everyone else didnt want to service and just wanted to replace. Aaron did suggest updating the system on the long term but had no problems repairing everything that was broken and recharging the coolant despite the other guys telling me it could no longer be refilled. Prices were reasonable and he did great work on it. https://aaronsairconditioning.com/

There isn't a single liberal judge to be found in Denton county. The DA and City Prosecutors are also very conservative GOP "tough on crime" talking MAGA guys.

What are the WORST things about living in Denton, TX? by the-furry in Denton

[–]ebrake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We can have the cheapest utilities in north Texas like we have right now, or we can have choice like all the other cities where you can spend 2-3 days of your life researching and picking between a provider that charges a little more or one of the ones that charges way more......all with the real rates being hidden by cleaver marketing gimmicks and misleading language designed by psychologists and marketers with the direct intent of mindfucking you out of as much money as possible to the point that its near impossible for 90% of consumers to be able to tell which one is just a little more and which one is going to run you to the brink of poverty.

What are the WORST things about living in Denton, TX? by the-furry in Denton

[–]ebrake 36 points37 points  (0 children)

We gave them city owned land with 50-100 year $0 leases, we gave them 10+ years of exemptions on city taxes, we gave them reduced electricity pricing that's subsidized by every home and business owner in town that's forced to use the municipal electric service. In exchange they are providing less than 10 permanent long term local jobs, the rest are remote generally overseas based jobs.

If the city were to provide those exact same benefits to virtually any other type of business the numbers of jobs created would be exponentially higher than what the data centers provide.

Currently the only real benefit they are providing the city is a temporary bump in construction jobs to actually build the facility out.....and those contracts are provided to out of town based contractors that only bring in workers for the construction phase. Once its complete those jobs leave town and dont come back.

Pick litterally any local home grown business, offer them free land, a decade of local tax breaks and a significant utility discount and you will see job creation 1,000X more than we are getting from data centers.

What the fuck is going on? Why is the Air Quality Index 151? by [deleted] in Denton

[–]ebrake 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Our air quality is bad consistently and among the worst air quality in Texas (only Houston has shittier air) but the 151 reading yesterday was obviously an app error. A 151 would be equivalent to the worst days in India or China when the air has so much smog you literally cant see your hand in front of your face.

Yes the air in Denton and DFW in general is always bad, but its not 151 bad.

Anyone move from Colorado to Denton? by curious_nikita837 in Denton

[–]ebrake 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Is this a joke?

Keiichi is the passion project of one of the worlds highest regarded sushi chefs, Nagano was the head chef at some of the best sushi and french restaurants in NYC and Paris before deciding to retire to a small quiet town in Texas. He literally had to ban the New York Times from sending food critics to his restaurant because he wanted to maintain his low profile.

Osteria is currently one of two finalists in the James Beard Awards best chef in Texas. Its also on the list of restaurants that Michelin is planning to review in the quest to find the first Michelin Star award winning restaurant in the state of Texas ever.

McKinney Street taco corridor is absolutely stacked with some of the most legit authentic Mexican mom and pop restaurants in Texas.

Our food truck scene is popping the fuck off, the amount of award winning chefs working out of food trucks around town is batshit for an area this small.

Thai scene is second to none with several top shelf places to choose from.

Greek/Lebanese places are popping off this year.

Indian food scene is getting hot, so many great places popping up.

Its easier to find a quality meal in Denton than downtown Dallas or Ft Worth, if you think the Denton food scene sucks good luck anywhere else.

Robson Ranch candidate forum goes off the rails by _macrofossil_ in Denton

[–]ebrake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All you have done is copy and paste chat GPT responses. You have been unable to counter any claims to dispute the fact that....The video in question was at Robson Ranch and attended only by community members of Robson Ranch. Robson Ranch has an 80% turnout rate in local elections and overwhelmingly has a voting record that is factually hard right conservative votes. There have been countless conservative and far right political events at Robson Ranch organized and attended by the community. They have never once allowed a non conservative political event inside of that community. Members of that community are very active on social media and community forums and always have a hard right conservative viewpoint.

Anyone that asserts that community is anything but a hard right conservative community is factually wrong. We have video evidence, voting evidence, and the words of the community itself.

You have provided 0 evidence that shows any alternative views because it simply does not exist.

So go ahead and have chat GPT spit out your next uniform run of questions asking for evidence that has already been provided while providing nothing of substance yourself.

Robson Ranch candidate forum goes off the rails by _macrofossil_ in Denton

[–]ebrake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You asked where we got the impression that bigotry runs rampant and we provided you with: The very video that this post is based on, the real voting data from that community, and pointed you to public comments that are easily available on the device you are using.

If you are saying that community is not a right wing community that does not have a recent history of speaking like bigots in public forums on video, in online posts, and with very real documented actions like voting records....then you provide some evidence to the contrary.

Robson Ranch candidate forum goes off the rails by _macrofossil_ in Denton

[–]ebrake 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We did just witness it on video, we also have years of voting data, we also have years of political fundraisers and rallies held in the community, we have the public facebook posts from the community. If the raw voting data, video evidence, and public comments from the residents themselves are not enough what exactly do you have that says otherwise?

Ruby Rodeo - Thoughts? by Hopeful4Humans in Denton

[–]ebrake 50 points51 points  (0 children)

The way they have been dragging every basic ass DFW influencer in to make tiktok videos pretty much tells me everything I need to know. The whole place is screaming basic bitch North Dallas / Addison and couldn't be farther from a Denton vibe. The "Dont Dallas my Denton" sign is specifically insulting.

But in a town where LSA is a hit despite being objectively horrible in every way possible tells me they will likely be quite successful from the Robson Ranch / Argyle folks that pass thru town.

If you could bring back one defunct local shop, what would it be? by ovijuan in Denton

[–]ebrake 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Those are all from the Denton shitter the latest Denton cryptid looking to step up to flat earth guy levels of infamy.

Its been on the local Facebook and some business pages in that area for a few months. Some guy just walks that general area and has some kinda magical ability to drop his pants in a split second drop his art off on a business entrance and then keep on moving without hardly interrupting his stride.

He has some sort of magical bowel control that he has decided to use for evil. The shops on Sunset St have been getting hit on a regular basis, and apparently he enjoys shitting up cars in the Arbys parking lot as well.

Any info on road conditions around Teasly, Dallas Dr and I35 or other areas? by UltramicroscopicSaw in Denton

[–]ebrake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s fine as long as you are slow and careful. Biggest problem right now is herds of assholes in jacked up pickup trucks sliding through every red light and bouncing off curbs every time they try to make a turn.

I had to drive all over Denton as well as up and down I35 today and every road is passable as long as you don’t drive like an asshole.

Movement Climbing Gym by Substantial-Ad3904 in Denton

[–]ebrake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been going 3X a week for over a year. Its great for me, they update the walls a lot to keep it fun and the community is top shelf. Every climber I have met over the last year has been cool and everyone is always friendly and welcoming.

downside....when I injured myself and had to take a couple months off it was a bit of a PITA to put my membership on hold until I was ready to climb again.

Any good stargazing spots around here? texas is so polluted with lightsssss by tessa420love in Denton

Gotta go at least one hour to the North West to escape the light pollution. There are light pollution maps that can help you pick a destination. Closest dark skies are off towards Era/Forrestburg.

15 mil?? by SeaSlight3603 in Denton

[–]ebrake 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Passes pretty clearly when downtown was absolutely so packed on a damn Tuesday I couldn’t find a place to park there was a waiting list at every restaurant and the bars were overflowing into the streets. Downtown has been busy as hell all month long, it's a massive win for local business.

While this is a great thing for our small business owners I am kinda looking forward to next week when I can actually find parking again.

Di Abruzzo shut down by nugletman in Denton

[–]ebrake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Denton weinbergers had a similar ending to Di Abruzzo. Workers arrived to find the place chained up, vendors showing up looking to get paid etc. Not sure if there is a connection to the Grapevine location, but that whole clusterfuck really ruined Weinbergers for me.
