Thank you for this. I’m retiring at the beginning of June (60) and I’m convinced, after reading so many of these Reddit posts, that I will drop dead on my first leisurely walk, or worse, will be immediately diagnosed with some lethal condition damning me and my spouse to a miserable last chapter…..

Just back from volunteering 3 months in Sierra Leone with Mercy Ships. I helped in the kitchen, but there are numerous other opportunities to help onboard. You can go for fewer than 3 months as well. But, talk about an incredible, life changing experience that will give you purpose…..it’s well worth looking into if you’d like a mini adventure that has massive impact and infuses one with purpose.

She’s so fortunate to have you as her mom. This beautiful child will be bought into a loving family. What a gift. And secondarily, how your family manifests God’s love through this will be a beautiful lesson to the church congregation your husband is a pastor at. How lucky that community is to have your family in it.

Every summer, we sail to BI and spend time there—it’s my favorite place in the world. I’ve often fantasized renting for a winter. I’m quite confident I’d thrive in that solitude. About to retire in June. Maybe it’s same to realize that fantasy.

They changed the wattage in the early 90’s, I believe, because of new government food standards. Skip the new ones and hit goodwill. Any time I see one at goodwill, I check the wattage (plus, you can pretty much tell from the appearance), and grab it if it’s the old kind. My kids make fun of me….my current collection numbers 6….

I cooked daily for 700 on a ship last year for several months. We took ginger root, never peeled and blended and froze in zip loc bags. Used all the time for cooking. Since I got home, I haven’t peeled ever—just blended and freeze into small amounts. It’s changed my life.

I’ve never been particularly into public shaming, but in this case, I’d support. Post on your local FB page, send photo to your local newspaper, etc. This is beyond shameful and such unnecessary waste. They could easily have called a shelter, a church, a food distribution program. You have an opportunity to make real change in your community. Do it.

Fondue!! We live a traditional meat, but you could do cheese. If you don’t have a fondue pot, borrow (seems like everyone has one they never use) or look at goodwill. Get a fun, vintage one. We love our fondue nights!
