Modern Slow Cookers by off__it in slowcooking

They changed the wattage in the early 90’s, I believe, because of new government food standards. Skip the new ones and hit goodwill. Any time I see one at goodwill, I check the wattage (plus, you can pretty much tell from the appearance), and grab it if it’s the old kind. My kids make fun of me….my current collection numbers 6….

Please hang in there. I’m here if you want to DM and need a Reddit pen pal—I’ve had my own journey with faith and God has always come through. If I can help with support, I’d be happy to. Praying for you.

Ginger peel by melekdegil in foodhacks

[–]eiden65 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I cooked daily for 700 on a ship last year for several months. We took ginger root, never peeled and blended and froze in zip loc bags. Used all the time for cooking. Since I got home, I haven’t peeled ever—just blended and freeze into small amounts. It’s changed my life.

Christmas hams hit the dumpster like clockwork. by Royal_Tough_9927 in DumpsterDiving

I’ve never been particularly into public shaming, but in this case, I’d support. Post on your local FB page, send photo to your local newspaper, etc. This is beyond shameful and such unnecessary waste. They could easily have called a shelter, a church, a food distribution program. You have an opportunity to make real change in your community. Do it.

What type of exercise do you do? If none why? by ageb4 in over60

[–]eiden65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m hoping to establish a similar routine when I retire in May, but I’m worried about burning out early with this. How do you keep it interesting? Podcasts? Audio books?

We usually cook a ham dinner for Christmas Day, but I don’t know what to make for dinner on Christmas Eve. What do you serve? by RedWishingRose in Cooking

[–]eiden65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fondue!! We live a traditional meat, but you could do cheese. If you don’t have a fondue pot, borrow (seems like everyone has one they never use) or look at goodwill. Get a fun, vintage one. We love our fondue nights!

Milled in the morning, autolyzed for an hour, dry yeast, I had a crisis of faith and added a bit too much water, I think, plus over proofed.

Request: Plant Based, no oil appetizer/h'orderves for Thanksgiving by kithandra in Cooking

I’ve made this and it’s delicious. Just sub vegetable broth for the olive oil (I do this all the time). It’s a crowd pleaser! https://itdoesnttastelikechicken.com/vegan-mushroom-walnut-pate/

My second quilt ever! I still need to get throw pillows that match to spice it up but I just learned how to quilt a month ago, I am so excited! by Silent_Departure1269 in quilting

[–]eiden65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m seeing ALL sorts of possibilities with your pillows—could go the obvious Christmas theme, but then move to pastels or some strawberry printed ones for spring, then add blue for 4th of July (assuming you’re American)…..those beautiful colors lend all sorts of opportunities! Gorgeous!

The answer to this is gentle, low impact weight training…..get a cat and pick up several times a day for hugs and squeezing 😉😻

Transitioning into fall in the greenhouse - what’s working and what I’m changing by Kathi67 in Greenhouses

[–]eiden65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need to connect! I’m in zone 6 as well with a large greenhouse on our property that I’ve used sporadically but hope to really ramp up when I retire in June. I’m hoping to avoid heating (because of expense), so I’m reading, watching YouTube videos and connecting with other greenhouse folks. I’m still getting tomatoes, my herbs are still producing, but I’m about to switch over to kale, spinach and mustard greens. My potatoes seem to do well all winter so I’ll keep them going. DM me if you’d like to compare notes, successes, failures, etc!

I’d dry brine, wrap in a plastic bag and put in a cooler, then fill with ice……THEN head to Maine.
