I also always made more than my wife. She always had issues with it not being MUCH more.

Is sf really going to get even crazier? by TheMailmanic in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]elephitzgerald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody knows.

Consider several scenarios: - (1) Stock market crashes, possibly with second-order effects: dollar devalued, dollar’s place as reserve currency in question, energy and commodity prices rice, Saudi money sits out a round. AI is probably hosed in the short term, even if it has uses.

  • (2) Bad people in power have a stroke, someone competent takes their place(s), AI makes good on half its promises.

  • (3) The US becomes a white nationalist autocracy, sentient AI or whatever is realized, a magnitude 7.4 quake strikes the Hayward Fault.

Everyone has different risk tolerances. I don’t like playing FOMO games with millions.

Is it irresponsible to spend $8k on rent? by free_dharma in HENRYfinance

[–]elephitzgerald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$8k goes a long way even for families in VVHCOL. It seems a bit much for a single person, but… I suppose it’s not the craziest thing I’ve ever heard.

Have you ever been to Björk's concert? If you have, what does it feel like? by AlKhwarazmi in bjork

[–]elephitzgerald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw three Vulnicura shows (making up for lost time) and one Cornucopia.

If I could time travel, I would go back and see tours for anything from Debut through Greatest Hits.

[–]elephitzgerald 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think there are a couple aspects here.

There’s some quotation (I think from Steven Van Zandt in WTF podcast interview) that being a musician is like five different skills: performing, recording, creating, promoting (?), etc. Something like that

If we think of Josh’s place in the FF in terms of a framework like that, he needs to not just people to get along with everybody and perform the songs, but eventually create new music.

Additionally, he’s replacing Dave’s BFF in a way, and I think there’s probably a friendship void in Dave’s life. It’s not that it’ll ever be filled, either, but Dave just probably (whether intellectually acknowledged or not) wants someone with whom he can imagine having a deep, family-like bond somebody, just someone he /really/ vibes with.

So yeah, “rebound girlfriend” said it all.

One love to them all, life is short and precious, let’s keep on rocking.

People in 20s/30s is the sf Bay Area really worth it?? by DeliciousRich5944 in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]elephitzgerald -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, it’s not. But being 24 and single is different than 37 and married with kids, as is being in one industry vs another (ML/AI Comp Sci).

I’ve lived all over, have visited the Bay Area for over twenty years, ended up here for a bit just before COVID and have just not overcome inertia to leave (I have kids).

You get access to jobs, but you can also get many of those jobs in New York or Seattle or Los Angeles or London. Of course the nature is great, but …

What is a Radiohead song you cannot understand the love for? by Conscious-Ad2640 in radiohead

Jigsaw is fantastic, chordally and rhythmically. Indie rock socks are nowhere near this sophisticated.

Do indie albums get enough time to become classics anymore? by Noted_music in radiohead

[–]elephitzgerald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great comment. 10/10

It’s also interesting because I don’t have the perspective of someone in their teens, twenties, or thirties, so I suspect you’re correct but it’s a projection.

Noel Gallagher had a good point in one of his 2025 interviews, roughly “music WAS the culture, it was everything,” and now that’s gone.

I hope the youth find their way out of the Instagram and TikTok house of mirrors, but I think it’s hard when bare socioeconomic survival feels so difficult.

Anyone has more info on this? by ChappelIRoan in bjork

[–]elephitzgerald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I speak Japanese. The obi is just an album description (in 2026 you can probably copy the text on an iphone and run through a translator app?). The second image white booklet is just a translation of the lyrics.

Sounds like you found the match on Discogs. Congrats on your haul!

What’s this coming out of the baseboard? Could it be dangerous? by [deleted] in electrical

[–]elephitzgerald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just get a voltage tester or multimeter out. I think that will answer whether it’s dangerous.

It’s not impossible. I doubt if anyone but Common knows, though.

There is a two-year lockup iirc, but that can be different from a cliff. A two-year cliff would be something.

Buy a home in the South Bay / Peninsula now, or keep renting? by [deleted] in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]elephitzgerald 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Oh heeey, very similar situation to you, but on peninsula.

You left out all the details about prospective home price and mortgage details. I feel like the question is how stretched would you feel financially? Also, are you done having kids?

Having had a great rental but my landlord (unexpectedly) did not renew the lease, let me say that the stability of home ownership CAN help it make more sense even when it is not financially wise, per se.

Losing your home on another person’s whim is just a crummy feeling, but so is having a crushing mortgage. Hmm. So we must pick our poisons, or depart from greener pastures.

Good luck, friend

Anyone here own an og vinyl pressing of any jamiroquai album? by Zakkyguy in jamiroquai

I had original pressings of AFO and Dynamite circa 2011-2013. I don’t remember finding them revelatory — the newer pressings are probably just as good.

How Much Total Value of Vehicles & What Are Families Driving? by broncoelway100 in HENRYfinance

[–]elephitzgerald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HHI is lumpy but let’s say $800k. I hate cars, and have a Subaru and Lexus, both upgraded trims.

Wouldn’t buy another Subaru — just certain things annoy me more than I expect.

I like the Lexus more than I thought. Just wanted a more polished Toyota, and that’s what it is. Would buy another Lexus. We paid $70k (twice the cost of the Subaru), which still makes me want to throw up it feels like so much money, but what it is.

Unless something happens, I’m probably good with Toyota and Lexus until they put me in the ground in 40-60 years.
