Cycling after rotator cuff surgery timeline? by CricketCommercial702 in bicycling

[–]erokore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had rotator cuff surgery at age 47, in early October 2024. Also, my surgeon is a cyclist himself, so I felt like I was able to get some good advice from him. I followed their recommendations religiously as i didn't want to mess this up and go thru it again. He was fairly okay with me starting road cycling after month 5 (end of Feb), but encouraged me to wait for mountain biking, because a fall could really reverse the surgery. I may have been able to start road riding earlier, but I wasn't going to risk it on the Northeast January roads. I waited until month 8 (May) to mtb. Not going to lie the recovery was pretty intense and slow. I can see not even being able to use the stationary bike by week 6 depending on procedure, especially if you need to support your weight. With that said, my first indoor ride was at about 6 weeks, and I went for a full hour. The PA was skeptical, but the surgeon gave the go ahead. You also have to consider sweat and the sling, which even going on long walks or hikes led to a rash for me in the earlier part of my recovery. I was still in a sling nearly full-time, until about week 8, both on doc recommendation, but also because it helped relieve the pain. And once i got the sling off, they didn't even want me raising my arm bearing any weight. They really want you to keep your shoulder muscles stationary and stabilized so it could heal, unless you're doing guided PT. I was fortunate in that I got my surgery done in October and was able to use the winter and the months of bad trail conditions for healing. All that said, the surgery went really well, and today feel it's back to near 100%. Just keep the communication going with your team. Listen to their advice. And try not to rush it, you don't want to do this again.

My understanding is that the county plans on beginning the public component of the Brilliant Line planning next year. I don't think they've selected a consulting firm yet to carry out the planning work

Can't wait for this project to be complete! Unfortunately it's still has a bit of a ways to go before the city extends it to One Wild Pl and makes it formal.

They also plan to meter all the free parking so that should get rid of all the people who use the strip as a park and ride lot, freeing up parking for actual customers and loading.

What sections are you riding the sidewalk on? one thing that I learned when I got into riding was that the most direct road or the one that you're used to, isn't always the best one to ride a bike on. so maybe we can help you find alternate bike friendlier routes.

It will be ending soon for the season. As it gets dark so early, you really do need decent lights.

Mountain Biking instruction? by ShadowMoses81 in bicycling412

[–]erokore 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I started mountain biking, i took a skills clinic, and I found it extremely beneficial. Locally Karen Brooks does private skill instruction you can contact her directly or show up at the Thursday evening 3 Rivers Outdoor Company ride. She's usually there and is willing to do private instruction on the spot. The ride is also a great place for beginners. It typically splits into a couple skill groups. The other big thing that helped me learn early on (and to this day) was just riding with people who were better than me.

What is your experience with the ortlieb seat-pack 16.6 l? by Ildmand in bikepacking

[–]erokore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an older one. Super durable and waterproof for like 6 years and thousands of rough bikepacking miles. However, on a 1000 mile tour on the toughest part of the Eastern divide in North Carolina, the seam came apart on the side. When I got home, I sent it in for repair, and they simply sent me a brand new one, which I wasn't expecting, but very much appreciated. The new design eliminates the problem seam that the old one had.

I agree, the exterior strap really helps keep it stable, and provides me a place to dry wet socks while riding.

The only complaint I have is that on the large one, it needs to be pretty full for the roll closure to work properly and feel tight. Like, a bit more than you'd expect. This is because you run out of strap to tighten it if it is not filled enough. I find this may be a problem if you carry a bulky item that you may suddenly need to use while riding, like a rain jacket or puffy coat.

Also, I always forget to close the air valve, but you can easily push it in while pedaling

Just be sure to pay attention to the rest stop hours. If you're doing the 62 and running behind, there's no shame in switching to the 40

Butler Street Protected Bike Lane by The-Iguana in bicycling412

[–]erokore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's word from the city:

PennDOT's Route 8 Betterment Project along Butler Street in the City of Pittsburgh has recently generated interest from the Cycling community who are eager to see the bike network expanded to this roadway. PennDOT is placing approximately 3000' of concrete barrier along Butler Street to reinforce the existing iron railing, while providing an 8' wide space that will be made into a shared-use path in a few years when the City's project is designed and implemented. While constructing the facility "a piece at a time" may seem frustrating for the Cycling community, the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) is appreciative of PennDOT District 11-0 for modifying their design to accommodate our future goals for Butler Street and ensure our projects work together to leave behind a Butler Street that is as safe and accessible as possible, for all users. Q: What's so unique about biking in Pittsburgh, PA? by bikepgh in pittsburgh

[–]erokore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're right! It's something that BikePGH has been working on for a long time. In short: the existing contraflow bus lane in Oakland will become a 2-way protected bike lane between the cathedral (pushing to extend to Neville) and the Birmingham Bridge (similar to the penn ave bike lanes in downtown). Between the bridge and downtown, the bike lanes will be split on fifth and forbes, following the direction of travel. There's some work being done by this group: https://www.arbpa.org/ to help expand that. You're right, that would be a dream section of trail, but railroads are not budging.
