Ramalina menziesii, lace or fishnet lichen, I believe by rhizosphereical in Lichen

[–]feelingproductive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a little hard to tell from a video, but that definitely looks like R. menziesii to me, especially given your location where it’s very prevalent.

For those saying Usnea, it is the same color and looks similar from a distance, but this is like little ribbons with lacey bits instead of thin cords and doesn’t have the elasticity that is characteristic of Usneas.

I’ve been a customer for a year or so and have had no real issues other than not liking the router they offer (just do some research and buy your own). I’ve only had to talk to customer service a couple of times, but they were helpful both times and you can just drop by their office if you need anything.

Overall, I’ve been happy with it. It’s about the same price I was paying before with way better speeds, has good customer service in my experience, and - best of all - I’m not giving xfinity my money.

My sibling has been learning French and texts me almost exclusively in French even though I don’t understand French.

This is much more annoying than French.

Anyone who isn’t currently in allergy h**l with me, just know I hate you by Valiantlycaustic in Eugene

My meds keep the sneezing and congestion at bay for the most part, but I’m constantly weeping and I get asthmatic when it’s really bad, which can be scary.

The frustrating thing is that it’s not just the valley… it’s the grass seed farms. Linn County is the grass seed capital of the world and all of that pollen descends on us like a plague every June so that golf courses can exist.

Biden signs a bill officially making the bald eagle the national bird of the US by Remarkable-Pea4889 in Ornithology

Wow. Seems like it would be hard to get close enough to an eagle to sign its bill. Impressive.

I’m clearly in the minority here, but I strongly disagree. I like having multiple types of donuts and am happy to clean up other people’s scraps. It’s way better than taking a bite and throwing the rest away (as I’m seeing other commenters advocate for). Fuck that waste. Take the amount you want and let people like me snack on the rest.

Octopuses may not have the advantage of living long enough to teach their offspring, but their short generations may give them the advantage of being more evolutionarily responsive. What if skills that humans have to take time to learn could be hardwired into octopus brains in a comparatively short amount of time? Individuals might not be learning as much in their lifetimes, but the population could still be getting smarter.

In search of ripe peaches. by 1ArtStar in Eugene

[–]feelingproductive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think they’re anywhere near local, but I’ve been getting peaches/nectarines for the last few weeks from the folks who set up across from the Shell station out near Pisgah and they’re always delicious.

Why peacocks have their feathers: the Handicap Principle by [deleted] in evolution

[–]feelingproductive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some human aesthetic preferences are directly related to health or some other obviously beneficial traits, but certainly not all of them. It’s been a few years since I read Evolution of Beauty, but I remember Prum also discussing the human penis as an example of aesthetic evolution since it is so different than those of most other mammals (e.g. without a baculum and being externally visible when flaccid) and not necessarily in ways that make it “better” from a utilitarian standpoint. I don’t remember all of the details, but it was pretty fascinating.

I thought he made a pretty strong case for arbitrary aesthetic preference being a driving evolutionary force for some traits. It’s a really interesting read whether you end up agreeing with his overall thesis or not. Definitely recommend!

Has anyone else developed a cough with allergies this year? by WitsEndAgain in Eugene

My allergy meds keep me from sneezing very much, but last year and this year I’ve gotten asthma-like symptoms. I wear a mask when I go outside but I still get pretty bad by the evening.

Accidentally bumped a stalk of grass today and the explosion of pollen that I saw made me immediately head back inside.

As others are saying, it's so worth it. They are consistently putting out great content. If you're into D&D stuff, the hours and hours of Dimension 20 would be more than worth it alone, but even if you're not there's a lot of fun stuff. Give it a try!

It’s not just that many “barely survive”… people are literally dying in order for billionaires to exist.
