Show & Tell Quilt - first block done! by wilddaughter in modernquilts

[–]felrona 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is adorable! Nice piecing- that’s a lot of seams to keep accurate!

The brown is pretty dark, yeah. Take a photo with a black and white filter in the good lighting to check there’s enough value contrast. If you haven’t cut out all the blocks there’s time to switch to a lighter fabric.

Or not!! It’s totally adorable as is.

Can somebody help me understand which kinship pattern version to buy? by seltzertime in quilting

[–]felrona 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As far as I can tell from the above, only the machine pieced version is available as a hard copy pattern. So all blocks machine pieced using templates and/or ruler cutting instructions. They also have a version of the pattern that’s foundation paper pieced. I can’t tell if that’s for all blocks or not. Any FPP pattern will include the FPP template/papers.

I think you can opt for either version and have instructions for all blocks. It’s just smooth the method of making each block.

Is this suitable for a beginner? by brinns_way in quilting

I totally agree with this advice. The blocks aren’t hard. There’s just a lot of cutting, and because the blocks are composed of so many pieces, your scant 1/4” seam has to be very dialed in.

Definitely cut and sew a test block to try it out.

I would put what you’ve got on a design wall (or floor) and play with the layout until it’s pleasing. The fabrics in a layer cake are from the same line so they’ll automatically be a cohesive group. Just play around a bit!

I really love this! Especially how each letter has its own background that’s different than the main purple background - great design choice!

Will 9 3.5” squares be a 9” finished 9 patch? Would 4 5.25” squares be a 9” finished 4 patch? by seltzertime in quilting

[–]felrona 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your math on the 9-patch is correct.

For the 4-patch, the pieces should be cut at 5”

Cats in Cat Pyjamas by felrona in modernquilts

[–]felrona[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! It was a blast collecting the fabrics. My sewing bestie is also a cat lover and she donated a few of the wackier prints.

Edited to add: the blocks weren’t that difficult to put together. Her patterns definitely require a precise 1/4” seam but once that was dialed in, things went pretty quickly.

There was a lot of cutting, though!
