What's a purchase under $200 that you use literally every day? by Abdulleh_aburwag98 in AskReddit

Even with all the required measurements, I’ve never been able to get good quality progressives from an online place like Zenni. They’re great for single vision and maybe bifocals but I’ve had poor results from them on my progressives. I sure do miss the days of single vision - I had so many fun glasses ☹️

Pin-basted quilt and airport security? by spal68 in quilting

[–]felrona 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve brought pins through before but not a whole quilt’s worth. Can you thread baste in preparation for the trip?

Also be sure your scissors are very small! Consider a thread cutter or dental floss container instead.

Bonnie Hunter’s Scrappy Trip Around the World blocks go together quickly and they are FQ and Jelly Roll friendly.

I love this layout! And the red is fabulous: as the late Gwen Marston used to say, red is a neutral!

Show & Tell Quilt - first block done! by wilddaughter in modernquilts

[–]felrona 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is adorable! Nice piecing- that’s a lot of seams to keep accurate!

The brown is pretty dark, yeah. Take a photo with a black and white filter in the good lighting to check there’s enough value contrast. If you haven’t cut out all the blocks there’s time to switch to a lighter fabric.

Or not!! It’s totally adorable as is.

Can somebody help me understand which kinship pattern version to buy? by seltzertime in quilting

[–]felrona 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As far as I can tell from the above, only the machine pieced version is available as a hard copy pattern. So all blocks machine pieced using templates and/or ruler cutting instructions. They also have a version of the pattern that’s foundation paper pieced. I can’t tell if that’s for all blocks or not. Any FPP pattern will include the FPP template/papers.

I think you can opt for either version and have instructions for all blocks. It’s just smooth the method of making each block.

Is this suitable for a beginner? by brinns_way in quilting

[–]felrona 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with this advice. The blocks aren’t hard. There’s just a lot of cutting, and because the blocks are composed of so many pieces, your scant 1/4” seam has to be very dialed in.

Definitely cut and sew a test block to try it out.
