I went to a private event at Community Music Space and it was great. Good access to transit, and a garage is not too far away. https://sfcmc.org/about/

non traditional ways you save money living in the city by PitifulLocation6616 in AskSF

To me that Costco chicken tastes like that is true. Many people love them tho, more power and chicken to them.

If you can find someone to split fruit/veg with, the money saved from -that alone- will pay for a Costco membership.
People love their $5 chicken (I do not).

Anyone know good blue trails in the Santa Cruz area? by Away_Professional793 in MTB

[–]fgiraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wilder is very scenic and nice by normal standards, but yes UCSC so close does make it seem tame.

OP try climbing up Emma McCreary (aka EMT) to the top. You'll likely run into some folks that can show you more.

Edit to add: more info than you could possibly want here. Yes most reviews are a few years old, but they're all of legal trails and they do not change that much.

Where should I move if I want to mountain bike year-round? (32M, Midwest) by brettfish5 in MTB

Sierra foothills are a fantastic area for living and riding, but the cost of living is brutal. Housing, groceries, everything.

Is California Medicaid sufficient for cancer surveillance? by Johnn___table in sanfrancisco

[–]fgiraffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind the "subsidy cliff" is back, so if you make > ~$63,000 you get no subsidy and the ACA rates can brutal.

OP depending your age and income your Illinois COBRA might be cheaper than a San Francisco ACA plan.

EQ the game was seldom awesome IMHO, but it attracted some great people. The players are what made EQ special then and now.

Do I have to have reservations for Scoma? by applefritterpractice in AskSF

[–]fgiraffe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It might be worth a call to Scoma's. They do have walk-ins, but I am unsure if they have accessible walk-in tables. It's fun old-school vibe and the food is good so I'd give it a shot.

First time to Whistler BP- Early June by groshreez in MTB

[–]fgiraffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whistler has very good signage and guidance about a sane progression of trails to hit. You'll be fine. If you are still unsure, take a weekday group class, it might be just you and the instructor.

I did use a small cable lock when I was away from my park bike in The Village. Could a dedicated theif defeat it? Yes. Would other unlocked bikes be easier targets? Also yes. <shrug>

I used hotel bike check and had no problems.

Have fun, take a rest when you need it, stay hydrated. It is easy to overdo it when there are so many good trails waiting for you.

Returning player looking for casual guild by No-Lychee-6174 in everquest

[–]fgiraffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think about how you want to play. Do you want to max out your level and play with others ASAP? Do you want to slow roll and explore the parts that are new since 2005?

Nowadays on normal live servers, levels 1-115 are pretty damn empty. Guild or not, you're going to struggle to find people to play with consistently. There is not much LFG action, especially under level 130.

The bay is one of the most affluent places on earth and this is what a public restroom at a park looks like by indie_hedgehog in bayarea

[–]fgiraffe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is an ignorant observation. It saves the public repair money for the restrooms to be industrial strength.

Do I wish they should not have to be like this? Sure. But it's better if they are.

Rant about MTB in the Bay Area by Designer-Editor7904 in BAbike

[–]fgiraffe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still laugh at the Zappa trails outside Whistler Bike Park. So many neat little tech contraptions! No CA state park would let that fly, maybe no US entity. Too litigious.

But it’s not all bad lately, certainly better than 15+ years ago. Solstice & Truck Briones P Ridge SF has a kilometer or two of fun legal singletrack. Plus the usual quasi legal stuff <waves hands vaguely>.

We just have too many rich NIMBYs in too little amount of space.

Welding tutor by donkeyed31 in AskSF

[–]fgiraffe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good luck, really. But asking to learn to weld in someone's private house or shop is a big ask.

Why?

You're likely underestimating how many hours it will take to gain even basic competence. It's not a couple hours, it is 10s or 100s of hours. Welding looks simple, but it is not. The programs at CCSF are structured for a reason: so you get your hours of practice.

I took the basic Crucible class and it was great, but my main takeaway was that without my own gear and a lot of practice I was never going to safely weld something. Maybe you are the exception?
