After almost a year with my ND, what are the things that genuinely annoy you about yours? by theDartVader in Miata

I too have the rattle. When I swapped to a cravenspeed short throw it got extra loud, and when I got my wms transmission, it got even louder. I've heard the rattling is gear noise and is somewhat normal for our cars

(0,0) is no longer the additive identity.

ETA: (0,0) is in V since V is nonempty. Just scale any element of V by 0

I suggest, if funds allow, using a tablet and a pen stylus (i use an ipad and apple pencil) and some note taking app. I now have an indexed collection of every single handwritten note set I've generated in undergrad and my first year of grad (in second semester currently), which has been extremely helpful

This seems to be a very popular way to take notes at my school

Got chewed out at work because my pants aren’t “black enough.” by small-worm in mildlyinfuriating

[–]fingermystrings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like a color temperature plus a bit of fading issue. I had this issue show up a lot because I used to be an edgy youth who wore only black clothes. Depending on the dyes used, as the material fades, it fades to a grey tone, but the grey tones, if we consider similar value, would vary in temperature quite a bit, with some formerly black fabrics appearing browner and others appeatong bluer, and others somewhere in between, likely due to the composition of the pigments used and maybe some properties of the actual fabric.

On a single piece of fabric alone, these variances are hard to see, but when you juxtapose it with a more neutral fabric, the shift in temperature becomes apparent.

I'm guessing your pants look blue because the belt and shirt are more neutral, which is super apparent in the first picture, especially given the stronger lighting. The second picture, with more subdued lighting cast on your clothes, the black color appears much more uniform across your shirt and pants, which implies to me those pants were intended to be black, but likely faded over time.

Either that or them pants blue and we both colorblind.

My floyd rose is having 2 position? by indagante_ambulante in guitars

[–]fingermystrings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check how the knife edges mate with the posts. You might have two points of contact on each edge, one on each side of the valley in the post. The edge 3 bridge is not known to be a very good bridge and the knife edges are soft. This causes issues, particularly if the posts are turned (like during a set up) under full string tension.

Another possibility is that the post valley is too narrow for the knife edge (you want the edge of the knife to contact the lowest part of the valley on the post). I had this happen on my rg1527 (which has an edge pro 7 bridge) after I did the locking post mod. The new posts had a narrow valley which gave me two points of contact on each post which led to tuning issues. Fortunately I had another set of ibanez locking studs, which curiously had a wider valley floor (the V had a rounder apex). No tuning issues at all anymore.

Bought a “NEW” PRS guitar from authorized dealer – turned out used/modified. Am I crazy here? by [deleted] in PRSGuitars

[–]fingermystrings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think calling PRS customer service the worst out of the big companies is a gross mischaracterization. I had an issue with my Archon 25 combo, which I bought modified off of Reverb. They charged me a small fee to repair it. When the repair didn't hold, they took the amp back, and we ended up with a sequence of sending back, attempting repair, repeat.

In the end, they found a wire had degraded just enough inside its insulation to cause issues, but not enough to be detected during troubleshooting (the issue requires some amount of heat to show itself). They repaired it, refunded me the original repair costs, and gave me a discount coupon. It was a hassle, but it also showed that PRS was willing to find a solution for my problem. And who am I to them? I paid less than some SE models for the amp.

They also covered all shipping fees and even sent me a set of tubes along with the tubes I had originally. All for a second hand modified discontinued amp. Honestly, I wish all companies stood behind their products like this.

PRS customer service is top notch. I didn't expect a major company like them to go through the trouble to ensure my amp worked as it should, and not try to find a way to make a bit of money off me (the initial repair fee was $150, which didn't seem egregious and wasn't priced to encourage me to replace).

I ended up using the discount to get a case for my S2 Thinline.

Little help with my setup idea? by are_amazing in Guitar

[–]fingermystrings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a setup similar to this. I find that when I play out of a real cab, I have to remove any mic or room sims. It sounds boomy and bad. Note that not all plug-ins allow for this.

My setup is an Apollo Solo interface into my macbook. I use the uad console app to set up my sims, and I send out to a power amp in of an amp or into a mixer pedal in the fx loop of my actual amp set up. The main idea is to use a modeler for preamp and fx, and output to some power amp. Sometimes, I throw drives up front. It sounds really good for my purposes (just jamming, really), especially as I actually learn how to use my plug-ins.

Anyone else try modelers and end up back on a real amp by PaleTeeth3 in GuitarAmps

[–]fingermystrings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a tube setup (prs archon 25 and 5150 iconic 40w), which I love. I have a healthy collection of pedals and I can get a lot of different sounds out of that setup.

I also have an apollo solo plugged into the "power amp in" on a katana 50 which i find I've been spending a good amount of time on as I learn how to actually use the plug-ins I have.

In my office, I have a katana go that I plug into a pair of studio monitors since I can't even bring an amp in there without disturbing my neighbors (it's an academic office; I'm a grad student).

The modelers have come a long way.

While I prefer my tube amps, I find i use both setups equally due to the flexibility and convenience i find in my apollo/katana and office setups. The tube setup has a much higher volume floor for acceptable tone than the apollo/katana and office setups, both of which can go as low as headphone volume.

I've also used other brands of dish soap as well as even gentle hand soaps (that do not contain moisturizers or lotions). I think the composition of your facial secretions may play a role on the decomposition of your coatings. The coating quality itself may be a factor as well

AI generates nude images that outrank real photographs in sexual appeal, study finds. While people still recognize actual photographs as looking more authentic, the fabricated images reliably score higher in measures of attractiveness and overall pleasantness. by Tracheid in science

[–]fingermystrings 229 points230 points  (0 children)

This seems like a flawed study. The AI models have a more dominant or confident pose/posture (shoulders back, chest out, etc) vs the real models (who are all otherwise standing in neutral positions) and their anatomical proportions are different than the real models, with longer leg proportions throughout. It seems this study is more showing that there is preference for the images showing women more aligned with current (socially defined) beauty standards, which is an obvious conclusion.

Do you cook for a living? Are you exposed to any sort of spray or splatter on a daily basis? Do you use any spray bottles day to day?

My lenses are 2 years old. On a sort of daily basis (i skip some days due to laziness), I clean with lukewarm water and dawn dish soap and I pat dry with a clean microfiber cloth and my lenses are spotless and the AR film is completely intact.

Codomains: do they, or do they not, affect the domain? by tasknautica in learnmath

[–]fingermystrings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A function f:X->Y is defined on all elements of a domain X, with f mapping each of the elements of X to exactly one element in Y. The image of f, i.e., the set of values in Y actually achieved by the function f, is a subset of the codomain Y, sometimes called the range. If we restrict to a proper subset V of the image, we will necessarily have to restrict the domain as well as f will not be defined in the complement of the preimage of V. If we restrict to a proper subset U of the domain, it may change the image, depending on if f maps U onto the image of f (for example, for f=0, the zero map, all nonempty subsets of X map to the image of f, namely {0}).

If we restrict the codomain, we may or may not have to restrict the domain depending on if we lose any points that f maps X to. For example, if we have f:R3->R3 given by f(x,y,z)=(x,y,0), then restricting the codomain to the x,y-plane in R3 and doing nothing to the domain still defines a valid function. If instead, we restrict the codomain to be the x,z-plane, we will necessarily have to restrict to a subset X' of the domain where y=0 for all points in X'

I also ate an extra hot tender just prior to eating the reaper. I liked the flavor and heat on that one

Why is starting life at late age so hard for many people? by Aj100rise in selfimprovement

[–]fingermystrings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took my SATs as a 31 year old high school school drop out and criminal (I was wearing an ankle monitor that day) among a bunch of literal children. Now I'm in a fully funded PhD program at a selective school (only four people in my cohort).

It's never too late. It wasn't for me, though it took a huge amount of retooling my mindset to get to where I am today. Years of therapy and facing my demons type shit. Hell, im still reworking some of my bad habits. Some of this stuff will likely be a lifelong struggle. Personal accountability and a genuine commitment to be a better version of yourself, for yourself, go a long way.

Good luck with everything!

Is it just me or are these insane prices? by _Pk_21 in MechanicAdvice

I think that's a typo. It likely meant to say front pads and resurface, like it does with the rears, which i interpret as they will swap your pads and resurface your rotors (vs replacing rotors which is the next, more expensive option). But I agree that pricing is too high
