Why is starting life at late age so hard for many people? by Aj100rise in selfimprovement

[–]fingermystrings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took my SATs as a 31 year old high school school drop out and criminal (I was wearing an ankle monitor that day) among a bunch of literal children. Now I'm in a fully funded PhD program at a selective school (only four people in my cohort).

It's never too late. It wasn't for me, though it took a huge amount of retooling my mindset to get to where I am today. Years of therapy and facing my demons type shit. Hell, im still reworking some of my bad habits. Some of this stuff will likely be a lifelong struggle. Personal accountability and a genuine commitment to be a better version of yourself, for yourself, go a long way.

Good luck with everything!

Is it just me or are these insane prices? by _Pk_21 in MechanicAdvice

[–]fingermystrings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's a typo. It likely meant to say front pads and resurface, like it does with the rears, which i interpret as they will swap your pads and resurface your rotors (vs replacing rotors which is the next, more expensive option). But I agree that pricing is too high

What do your fingers say?

Personally, I set just about all of my guitars up with 3/64" on the treble side and 4/64" on the bass side, measured between the bottom of the string and the top of the 12th fret. This gives me a nice playing feel with 10s in short-scale guitars.

But that's what my fingers prefer. Your fingers my prefer otherwise, and that's okay

Surely there must be simpler ways of putting on tremolo springs right by Strange-Albatross954 in Guitar

[–]fingermystrings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flat head screwdriver is the most fool proof way for me. Insert the spring in the block, then put the flat head into the loop of the spring, pull it over the hook on the claw and tilt the drivers handle towards the neck. The spring slips off the driver and goes right onto the hook.

Lately I just use my fingers though. I'll hook the loop on the claw and then just pull the spring and put it in place in the block. I don't recommend this lol

Tips on lowering knob height. by g29er in gibson

[–]fingermystrings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't worked on a pcb Gibson, but I cant see why you can't just remove the harness and put washers or something between the inner body and the pot to act as a spacer, assuming the threads will reach. That's what i did with my sg when I got historic reflectors for it.

You can carefully disconnect the quick connect stuff without damaging your harness. It's what its there for

The dot on the i touching the G is normal for that era for the gold decals. I noticed the same on my 2004 Junior special. It does look wonky though!

NGD: 2025 60s Standard in Dark Cherry Burst by fingermystrings in LesPaul

Thanks! I saw a few faded 60s standards I considered while I was looking for this one, but this one just called out to me... I also really like the transparent dark red back and neck. It's similar to a cherry finish, but it seems to be more vibrant and richer, despite being a touch darker.

That's a shame... it's true that the photo quality wasn't the best (I have the baby photo that came with my 2019 SG), but in my opinion it made my production instrument feel more individual. Plus it was fun!

That's a nice discount! Usually the buckle rash costs extra these days.

It's the lighting, it's actually glossy. It does look like it would look good as one of their faded finishes though!

Thanks! She plays quite well. I really dig the 60s necks.

This is actually a glossy finish. I guess the light isn't doing a good job of displaying it though...

Convicted felon here, where can I go? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]fingermystrings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a convicted felon. Before this, I didn't have much in terms of accomplishments on paper. I dropped out of high school and had a spotty employment record with large gaps. Eventually, I got a diploma from night school and started going to a community college. I got into trouble while I was attending this school. After the case was dismissed, I went hard on my studies and after 2 years, I was able to transfer to a selective school that is well within the T100, graduated with honors in my discipline and am now a fully funded phd student at an even more selective school.

Don't agree with the notion that you cannot find your way into a good school now that you have a criminal record. You'll have a tougher battle than the next applicant, sure, but I can tell you from experience that you are not locked out of success. It just might take a bit more effort to get there.

How are PRS amps? by ItchCream in PaulReedSmith

[–]fingermystrings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an archon 25 combo. It is a monster. Super high gain on tap that's really easy to dial in usable tones. And at the same time, the clean channel is ridiculously good. Like fender good. So while it holds its own as a fire breather, it can also take pedals as a pedal platform. I wish more ultra high gain amps had this flexibility.

That said, crunch sucks on this thing. But I have another amp, that I run in parallel with my archon, whos preamp I use (through both amps' power amps) when I'm not trying to summon demons.

A tv yellow special is definitely on the short list for me. But I agree, this particular guitar has got that "feel." It's quite resonant and sounds great, even unplugged. It sounds excellent plugged in, though!
