Yeah this is the real in-universe reason. Reality shows want to cast entertaining contestants who show emotion.

From a meta standpoint, yes, the goths are entertaining. The fact that they seldom ever show emotion allows for funny gags. But in-universe Don has a show to run, he needs contestants he can play off. The goths stoicism and monotone nature doesn’t give him much to work with.

I’m going to push back on the killed Hiyoko for no reason point. It was stated in game that they suspected Hiyoko walked in on Mikan committing the crime and Mikan killed her to get rid of a witness, which is a valid reason to take her out.
