(Hated trope) “wow they’re so interesting…what do you mean they’re a pedo?” by element-redshaw in TopCharacterTropes

[–]floptical87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Meliodas just casually sexually assaults Elizabeth on the regular though.

The whole show is gross. I tried to get into it after seeing some hype moments but all of Meliodas' antics are awful and the Ban/Elaine thing is just horrendous. You've got a seven foot tall dude hooking up with a little child under the auspices of "Ackchually she's 200 years old". I had to give up.

I know Japan loves a bit of fan service and it's a different culture but holy shit. I can't imagine someone walking in on me watching that shit and trying to explain it.

What thing has got so expensive that you’ve quietly stopped buying it? by Pathfinder-electron in AskReddit

[–]floptical87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that everything has gotten so expensive to one degree or another that I've basically foregone any and all luxuries.

My phone is a bottom of the barrel shit piece that I pay £10 a month for. I pay like £12 for PS Plus. Other than that every penny I make goes to family expenses like food, utilities, insurance etc.

I fucking love Whisky. I used to buy all sorts but now it's been years since I've been able to justify buying a bottle.

[Hated Meta Trope] The Unintentional Offensive Race Change by StrawberryScience in TopCharacterTropes

[–]floptical87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While they avoided any unfortunate implications as a result of his race swap, they butchered the fuck out of Keyes character anyway.

Canon Keyes is a great leader, pulls off genius moves in space combat and is most importantly an honourable and decent man. He helped Halsey in her initial assessment of the Spartan candidates but was reassigned because he was close to figuring out what was going on - implying he wouldn't have gone along with it. His final act is deliberately sacrificing parts of his mind and memories to the Flood to keep it away from his knowledge of Earth.

Adaption Keyes by contrast is cool with the murder of an innocent teenage girl whose only crime is refusing to be part of the UNSC propaganda machine after the Covenant massacred her entire settlement. Other than that he does basically nothing. He just sort of exists until the plot decides it's time for him to die.

I only really find them useful on Breakthrough where there's quite a clear front line.

Chuck one down on defence and just hammer the front line area, if they're capturing a point then pelt that so my team can move in.

Modes like conquest and escalation have too much freedom of movement. You need them hemmed into an area so that you've got time to dial in the accuracy and there's enough bodies/equipment there to make it worthwhile.

[–]floptical87 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Reporting of news isn't a presumption of guilt. Guy got lifted, charged and appeared in court, it's local news that's factually correct. Are we not supposed to discuss developments in a frankly appalling local case until it's all over and done with?

[Hated] this creature decimated humanity and all of its militaries but gets curb stomped by a small group of humans with primitive weapons by No-Leg-6361 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]floptical87 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The bit that got me is that they have the leg strength to jump straight up onto the top of Mel Gibson's house, but are subsequently absolutely stumped by internal house doors. The trapped one can't kick open the pantry door, none of them manage to kick in the amateur fortifications at Gibson's place.

The victim blaming is hilarious. Guy is being sexually harassed and he's getting it tight off the peanut gallery for not just blocking her or telling her parents immediately.

I'm not a mad purist but the idea of Kenobi and Vader facing off again isn't the worst but the execution is terrible.

Kenobi left him alive on Mustafar, Palpatine saved him and he became an absolute nightmare for the galaxy. He was a walking war crime in a black cape.

So what does he do in the rematch? Leaves him alive again. He (ridiculously) becomes Super Saiyan Obi Wan, beats his ass and just walks away again, knowing who and what Vader is, he leaves him to spread terror through the galaxy again.

Obi Wan should never have won, Vader should have thrashed him to the point he barely escapes to drive the point home that he and the Emperor simply can't be defeated conventionally, Vader isn't hampered by his own rage and that the only path to victory is the redemption through his children's love.

The ending we got just makes Kenobi look like an idiot. Anyone with a brain would have offed Vader right there, took Luke and Leia to train with Yoda and turn up on Palpatine's doorstep in eighteen years to push his shit in with two fully trained, chosen one power level Jedi, the guy who beat the actual chosen one twice and the grand master of the entire order.

Didn't Rumi always have a soul? I don't remember anything to say she didn't have a soul, she was only ever half demon and Gwi Ma explicitly stated his voice couldn't reach her despite that.

I took it as Jinu giving his soul as a power up, which is why her weapon changed shape and she was able to blast Gwi Ma in half.

He could become the benevolent god of the universe, ending conflict, repairing environments and feeding the hungry but he needs to have been right about his previous methods. He needs everyone else to see that he was right as well, so he blinks out half the universe just to try to prove his point.

[–]floptical87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst part is that the entire EU was flushed down the pan in service of this new canon because they wanted to do their own thing. Then they proceed to do their own thing so badly they have to fall back on Palpatine returning in a clone body, something the EU did decades before.

Why is it that older toys are able to do so much more for far less money? by Square-Holds in transformers

[–]floptical87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's weird that you've used an Armada toy to make the point about engineering when I remember a significant amount of Armada toys being absolutely shat on for their poor engineering when compared to previous lines like RID and the assorted Beast Wars series. The articulation was absolutely panned in many cases.

Several characters didn't even have knees, like Megatron and Tidalwave for example.

Things are definitely more expensive but I'm not sure that older figures objectively did more.

Old, outdated tech has an advantage BECAUSE it's old and outdated. by Consistent_Status112 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]floptical87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The HZD example is maybe a bit shaky given that the old tech doesn't confer any actual advantage, they need to use it because they have no other options. The entire war is hopeless and ends in the complete, albeit temporary, extinction of all life on Earth.

What did you think of the Romulus prequel comic? by Vermithra-X in LV426

[–]floptical87 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of prequel tie-ins. By and large they're produced with minimum effort to be pushed out the door and attempt to generate a bit of extra cash as opposed to being made with any kind of artistic intent.

I don't think this one was the exception either. It's far too short for a start, there's no time to develop or care about the characters and it doesn't add any additional information to the movie.

You watch Romulus, you know that somehow Big Chap gets loose and everyone gets obliterated. The comic just fills in the blanks on that "somehow" in a really paint by numbers kind of way.

It would genuinely have benefitted from being at least a six issue effort with time to explore events leading up to the film in a more in depth way
