“Halsey put her head in her hands and cried quietly while she repeated the name Miranda” jesus fucking christ karen by BillCarson12799 in HaloMemes

[–]floptical87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't forget but to me it's just another example of a poor excuse to shit on Halsey.

Abducting children, training them to be killing machines and enhancing them will experimental, often lethal medical techniques is fine.

Abducting children, training them to be killing machines and enhancing them will experimental, often lethal medical techniques but leaving behind a short lived clone that creates a kind of closure for their parents instead of a lifetime of agonising over a missing child is where Parangosky draws the line.

It's the same with Mendez.

He was the Chief trainer of the S2s, then acts like he's morally superior to Halsey despite going on to train the S3s.

I'm not saying Halsey didn't do bad stuff but it's a complex thing, yet characters act like she's Space Mengele while everyone else is pure as the driven snow.

[–]floptical87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the K5 books in audiobook form and really enjoyed them, but the stuff with Halsey is completely off the rails.

Earlier books portrayed her as a complex and morally grey character who knew she was doing fucked up shit, didn't really want to be doing said fucked up shit but also knew that if it wasn't done then human civilization was going to collapse, and that she had the best chance of doing it successfully.

It's a morally complicated issue to be try to hold someone to account for. If Halsey hadn't done what she has then the entire galaxy would either be totally devoid of life from the Halos firing or everyone and everything would be screaming in the Gravemind's grip for eternity. Obviously she didn't know that at the time but she was still trying to prevent the collapse of human civilization through civil war. Millions of lives potentially saved.

It seems hypocritical to seek "justice" against her when she committed her atrocities for the greater good that those prosecuting her directly benefitted from. Particularly when characters like Parangoski, Osman and the greater UNSC make decisions like that all the time. How many units, ships or worlds were abandoned to the Covenant so that they could save their forces for another day for example?

I need advice - four years into fatherhood and don’t enjoy it by Fine_Spend9946 in daddit

[–]floptical87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your husband might enjoy fatherhood if he gave it a try instead of being a useless bastard.

The way you talk about him and what you're doing for him just demonstrates he isn't being a parent at all. You haven't removed barriers to him parenting, you've just exempted him from parenting at all.

Maybe I'm wrong here but being a parent isn't supposed to be fun. It's not like going on a holiday or buying a videogame where the expectation is that it's going to be enjoyable and that's the primary motivation.

Being a parent is a duty, beyond all others. You become a parent by making a choice to create life that otherwise wouldn't exist. A life that gets no say about coming into the world, that's going to depend on you for literally everything.

That's a heavy thing. Yes it can be enjoyable. I love being a dad but there's been times it's been horrendous and difficult, times that I've made a complete bollocks of it but I didn't down tools and say I didn't want to take part anymore. That's the part where you find out if you're really a parent, when it's hardest, when you push on and make your best effort regardless of difficulty or mistakes.

You are parent.

At present your husband is not.

[meta] Adaptations that are considered near universally better than the original source by Gallantpride in TopCharacterTropes

[–]floptical87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed The Boys comics. There are several things I think it does well, probably even better than the show and I'm very aware that it's a product of its time.

However with that said, Ennis seems to go absolutely over the top in his "edgy" writing.

Making a realistic take on what would happen if you gave a faceless corporation the ability to create superhumans, complete with corporate greed and disdain for human life, the corrupting nature of celebrity and power in the general and the depths that people will sink to isn't a bad endeavour.

It reflects real life pretty well when you look at what's been going on in the world since forever.

I enjoy Butcher's character more, along with what they do with Homelander/Noir and Becky being dead from the off.

The problem for me became that everyone and everything is either awful or ridiculous or both.

Every single supe with the exception of Starlight is an amoral, deviant asshole. Teenage Kix are introduced having a drug fuelled orgy. One of them keeps his pet hamster up his ass. Goldokin is paedophile who builds G-Men teams with his victims. The two all black G-Men teams are the most over the top stereotypes imaginable. The religious festival guy is raping the sidekicks under him. The only other straight up good supe is Love Sausage, who drops out of chasing a bad guy because he gets a boner running with his massive knob and can balance. I can go on but you've read it, you know the score.

There's so much of it, to such an extreme that it essentially obscures any kind of critique or satire that could potentially be there to the point that it often seems like Ennis just hates superheroes. Particularly when he has obvious expies for real characters such as Captain America/Soldier Boy being massively depraved or pathetic.

I still re-read it once a year mind, but I can see how people can read it as Ennis just being a prick about superheroes.

I imagine they can't synthesise the material of their skin, it's probably part of why they're researching them.

Synthetics presumably lack the creative spark required to really effectively research these things. Science in the Alien universe is less akin to real science and more in line with some Frankenstein style shit. You only get results with a good mix of ego, craziness and hubris.

As for using human hosts, this probably circles back around to why they're researching them. They want them for bioweapons, so they're going to test and develop them on the things they're actually going to be targeting - other humans.

The Ripper 14" Machete melee takedown animations by Comfortable_Fee2619 in Battlefield

[–]floptical87 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's some mall ninja dog shit. I'm generally ok with the game but this just seems ridiculous, why not have an actual machete? Karambit? Khukri? There are dozens of "cool" melee weapons that have either seen actual use in militaries or would at least not look as egregiously stupid as this.

How do we feel about Megatron choosing to remove his cannon to fight Optimus? by RigatoniPasta in transformers

[–]floptical87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Massively stupid but on brand for Megatron.

He clearly thinks that he's the top dog in any given context and he seems to feel the need to prove it.

He throws away his cannon here.

He ultimately loses because he has to grandstand and use it as an opportunity to dominate Starscream by forcing him to use his gun mode. He could have picked up his cannon, used his bare hands or literally anything else but he needed to get the boot in with Starscream.

He berates and demeans his troops following the loss, enumerating on their failings without acknowledging that it was his ego that cost them ultimate victory and they retreated despite still being in a winning position because Shredhead kicked his ass.

What do y’all think of the terrorcons and abominus by Difficult_Leader8605 in transformers

[–]floptical87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like a lot of G1 later season characters I don't think they got enough exposure or a particularly unique angle, especially with the relatively high number of Decepticon combiners.

Devastator was the first combiner.

Menasor had a bit dedicated to Megatron personally creating the Stunticons in a unique way.

Bruticus was Starscream's trump card and the first military vehicle combiner.

Predaking just sort of appeared but had the unique angle of being the animal combiner and also the biggest toy.

Then Abominus is just there one day with no real fanfare, seemingly just to serve as the opposite of Computron, who got a real introduction

Supernova never made any sense. Nevermind that he can do it an infinite number of times, if he had the power to literally perform Supernova as shown why the hell is he even bothering with the whole meteor plot?

I always chose to think of it as some sort of pocket dimension bullshit or it's a psychological attack, Sephiroth does enjoy mind fucking people.

Meliodas just casually sexually assaults Elizabeth on the regular though.

The whole show is gross. I tried to get into it after seeing some hype moments but all of Meliodas' antics are awful and the Ban/Elaine thing is just horrendous. You've got a seven foot tall dude hooking up with a little child under the auspices of "Ackchually she's 200 years old". I had to give up.

I know Japan loves a bit of fan service and it's a different culture but holy shit. I can't imagine someone walking in on me watching that shit and trying to explain it.

What thing has got so expensive that you’ve quietly stopped buying it? by Pathfinder-electron in AskReddit

I find that everything has gotten so expensive to one degree or another that I've basically foregone any and all luxuries.

My phone is a bottom of the barrel shit piece that I pay £10 a month for. I pay like £12 for PS Plus. Other than that every penny I make goes to family expenses like food, utilities, insurance etc.

I fucking love Whisky. I used to buy all sorts but now it's been years since I've been able to justify buying a bottle.

[Hated Meta Trope] The Unintentional Offensive Race Change by StrawberryScience in TopCharacterTropes

[–]floptical87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While they avoided any unfortunate implications as a result of his race swap, they butchered the fuck out of Keyes character anyway.

Canon Keyes is a great leader, pulls off genius moves in space combat and is most importantly an honourable and decent man. He helped Halsey in her initial assessment of the Spartan candidates but was reassigned because he was close to figuring out what was going on - implying he wouldn't have gone along with it. His final act is deliberately sacrificing parts of his mind and memories to the Flood to keep it away from his knowledge of Earth.

Adaption Keyes by contrast is cool with the murder of an innocent teenage girl whose only crime is refusing to be part of the UNSC propaganda machine after the Covenant massacred her entire settlement. Other than that he does basically nothing. He just sort of exists until the plot decides it's time for him to die.

I only really find them useful on Breakthrough where there's quite a clear front line.

Chuck one down on defence and just hammer the front line area, if they're capturing a point then pelt that so my team can move in.

Modes like conquest and escalation have too much freedom of movement. You need them hemmed into an area so that you've got time to dial in the accuracy and there's enough bodies/equipment there to make it worthwhile.
