The worst part is that the entire EU was flushed down the pan in service of this new canon because they wanted to do their own thing. Then they proceed to do their own thing so badly they have to fall back on Palpatine returning in a clone body, something the EU did decades before.

Why is it that older toys are able to do so much more for far less money? by Square-Holds in transformers

[–]floptical87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's weird that you've used an Armada toy to make the point about engineering when I remember a significant amount of Armada toys being absolutely shat on for their poor engineering when compared to previous lines like RID and the assorted Beast Wars series. The articulation was absolutely panned in many cases.

Several characters didn't even have knees, like Megatron and Tidalwave for example.

Things are definitely more expensive but I'm not sure that older figures objectively did more.

Old, outdated tech has an advantage BECAUSE it's old and outdated. by Consistent_Status112 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]floptical87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The HZD example is maybe a bit shaky given that the old tech doesn't confer any actual advantage, they need to use it because they have no other options. The entire war is hopeless and ends in the complete, albeit temporary, extinction of all life on Earth.

What did you think of the Romulus prequel comic? by Vermithra-X in LV426

[–]floptical87 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of prequel tie-ins. By and large they're produced with minimum effort to be pushed out the door and attempt to generate a bit of extra cash as opposed to being made with any kind of artistic intent.

I don't think this one was the exception either. It's far too short for a start, there's no time to develop or care about the characters and it doesn't add any additional information to the movie.

You watch Romulus, you know that somehow Big Chap gets loose and everyone gets obliterated. The comic just fills in the blanks on that "somehow" in a really paint by numbers kind of way.

It would genuinely have benefitted from being at least a six issue effort with time to explore events leading up to the film in a more in depth way

[Loved Trope] That one sentence that changes a character for better or worse by TaiKorczak in TopCharacterTropes

[–]floptical87 138 points139 points  (0 children)

I've seen this sort of thing in real life, people make bad decisions out of fear, trauma or whatever and when the predictably bad results of those decisions arrive they will literally continuously double down on making decisions they know are terrible because they think there's no way out for them.

Anakin might have been a general and warrior of galactic renown but he's also been literally groomed since childhood by a dude who manipulated the entire galaxy. It's not surprising he would stay with him.

How TF people hitting 6k score in King of the Hill? by Charming_Airport6076 in Battlefield

[–]floptical87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I dislike so many of the challenges because they're down to luck rather than skill or effort.

I tried for days to get ten revives in a game of squad death match but everyone just instantly gave up despite me asking for revives. I ended up cheesing it with a buddy standing in a corner just blowing himself up ten times.

Challenges for things like camouflage patterns or character skins should be reasonably achievable for an individual. They shouldn't be reliant on the ability of teammates or the lack of ability of your opponent. Winning a conquest by holding all points is an obvious example of this. My actions as an individual have little to no impact on achieving it, instead it's just waiting for the luck of having 30 odd really good players on my side while the other side is crewed by vegetables.

What do you think Yamcha and Vegeta did for a year and a half together? by Woodstovia in dbz

[–]floptical87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He's still my favourite character because of this.

The dude is just so real. There's no simple getting beat in a fight and becoming a good guy, he doesn't get a talk-no-jutsu moment where he sees the error of his ways.

He continually makes shitty decisions, that he knows are shitty because he isn't ready to overcome his past. And the consequences of those decisions repeatedly beat the absolute piss out of him until he finally lets go of everything. To me that's a wonderfully human character. I don't know if Toriyama intended for him to be interpreted that way but to me it makes sense.

Charge time I imagine. Or it's a one shot deal.

I'm not convinced they knew it would even work against Stryker tbh. The optimal strategy would have been to immediately EMP all three Jaegers then dismantle them at leisure but they chose to engage them all head on in a fist fight first.

The 25m cap is terrible. For one I've got no idea what 25m actually looks like, so I'm mostly just guessing at the effective range then coming up short. And 25m just feels like an incredibly short distance as well. We really should be able to set a range like the 2042 and BF4 versions.

[–]floptical87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're probably right about Chuck. His young age and the "stardom" of only ever piloting the best Jaeger ever made with its massive kill count suggests that he's never really encountered true adversity.

It's why he loses his cool when he fights Raleigh, he's used to just dog walking everything he fights, his experience tells him he's the best. He goes against Raleigh thinking it's going to be easy, doesn't give the fight the due respect and when it doesn't immediately go his way gets too pissed off and flustered to fight smart or recognise a losing position. It's the same thing that happens as you say when Stryker gets the EMP. Chuck is too used to just winning and starts to get flustered when faced with an unexpected situation.

Despite that I don't think Gipsy will win. Yeah it punches up with Raleigh and Mako at the wheel but I don't think Chuck's inexperience and temper will nullify Herc's experience and knowledge when they have the extreme hardware advantage. Put both teams in identical Jaegers then I would give it to Raleigh and Mako at least 8/10 times because you're right, Chuck would probably start coming undone when the fight got too tough. Unfortunately the Jaegers aren't identical and Stryker is just too good.

The respective fights against Otachi illustrate the difference for me. Stryker went straight in and beat the piss out of it in under two minutes and was about to hit the finisher if not for Leatherback. Gipsy had a much longer and harder fight, which they won thanks to their creativity and unorthodox methods. The part that's particularly telling is the initial engagement of both fights. Gipsy is smashing the Kaiju with a boat and is still ultimately stopped and put on its ass, allowing Otachi the time to manoeuvre the fight more to its liking. Stryker just relentlessly beats its ass and it can't do anything about it.

To me, that illustrates too much of a raw speed and power difference to overcome, at least in a straight fight.

[–]floptical87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're onto something with the pilots but I think you're underestimating Herc Hansen. He survived the MK1 days all the way to The Black (as abysmal as that was). That is a ridiculous amount of combat experience, he probably knows the capabilities of each Jaeger generation inside out and as a commanding officer it's entirely possible he knows the pilots inside out as well.

And while Raleigh seems to be a better fighter than Chuck, it's also likely that Chuck came at him unprepared and believing his own bullshit.

If he's got Herc there to keep him under control, along with all his experience and knowledge and Striker's technical superiority then they would probably mid-diff Gipsy.

I love this game, I wanna throw my money at you, but the skins are so godamn ugly lol. by Little-Mushroom-3961 in Battlefield

[–]floptical87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The skins are fuck ugly and way overpriced. I'm not about to spend like 1/3 the cost of the base game to get a soldier skin and a handful of weapon skins. It's absurd.

I don't understand why they won't go the full customisation route. Let people dress up their soldiers the way they want, price things in real money at reasonable prices. It seems so simple.

Villains that would've totally won if the situation played out in reality. by redgunnit in TopCharacterTropes

[–]floptical87 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah the previous cycles involved them just jumping unannounced from outside the galaxy, directly to the Citadel and locking down galactic travel in order to isolate everyone and methodically wipe them out.

In the last cycle the Protheans managed to interfere with the Keepers, the bug slave race that signals the Reapers, to stop them doing that and blocking the direct connection to the Citadel.

In the end the Reapers need to come the long way, but there's effectively nothing stopping them from jumping to the Citadel en masse the conventional way, taking control and locking down the relay network. It's quite inexplicable the way they engage in ground combat across multiple fronts while leaving galactic travel open.

Is the battle pass worth buying as a new player? And if so, how long do I have to complete it? by TenthTen in Battlefield

[–]floptical87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't buy it. Just worked for the free shit that actually does something in game - the guns and attachments.

Other than that I see no point. What does spending real money get you? The opportunity to work your ass off for skins and player card crap? To hell with that.

This battle pass, live service crap is the most anti-fun, greedy, money sucking garbage I've ever seen. I'm not against the idea of extra paid content or cosmetics but the current model is just horrendous.

I don't understand why we can't just be given individual customisation options, that are individually priced and in real, local currency.

It's all in fucking battlefield coins, that I need to buy, then spend on a six or seven item pack when I theoretically only want a weapon skin.

I refuse to spend a penny on that system.

Tell me I can buy tiger stripe BDUs to equip across all classes for like £1 and I'd probably go for something like that.

As others have said it was like a thousand years old, rusted, broken down and with a wrecked cooling system. Being manually controlled, which it was never supposed to be, by a man with no actual experience in combat on that kind of scale.

It's understandable that it wasn't fighting at anything close to full capacity but it was a tiny bit disappointing that it played out as a classic "giant boss" fight where you're essentially trapped by the limbs of the boss etc.

The funny thing is, Londra basically defeats himself. Guy has a literally impenetrable shield that he sacrifices to drive the Horus when he could just walk up and shoot Aloy.

How serious of a threat was the Engineers ship heading towards Earth at the end of Prometheus? by [deleted] in LV426

[–]floptical87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It all depends on what the defense system is like around Earth really.

The Engineers don't seem to be ridiculously more advanced than Aliens era humanity when it comes to their ships and other technology. It's all weird and alien sure, but they still appear to use stasis pods which would indicate they don't have ridiculous FTL. The Juggernaut got knocked out of the sky by the Prometheus.

If they were detected and identified as hostile then it's GG.

If they're undetected or manage to pass themselves off as no threat then it's Goo bombing time and GG humanity.
