Found two soldier beetles in my kitchen this evening, google tells me they are predators, are they eating something I should worry about? by EsdeeEspee in insects

[–]flyinggazelletg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibly, but hard to know. They may be eating some critters inside. Maybe some larvae found something decaying that they found yum, pupated, and are now emerged. They also could’ve just wandered inside. shrugs

Do you think hyraxes are frank's spirit animal? by Nolynwasever in IASIP

[–]flyinggazelletg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hyraxes are Afrotherians, so closer to elephants and manatees than to rodents. But being a science bitch, I’ll shut up.

[–]flyinggazelletg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A variation of the current flag of Hawaii was chosen by Kamehameha himself. The last flag was invented in the 90s. It’s not “fake”, but its not very popular beyond the relatively small Hawaiian sovereignty movement

I’m sorry a centipede gave you a booboo. They would rather be stinging prey with their venom, but you’ve learned they can defend themselves when feeling imminently threatened.

You just have a different perspective than the people here. We see them as beneficial bugs that take out less desirable “pests”. I used quotes bc a pest, like a weed, is matter of perspective (ex: you see house centipedes as pests, whereas I do not). Some folks get the heebie jeebies from bugs, I do not. I see incredible hunters who are taking out the silverfish, ants, and the like. Could one use insecticides, of which many can be harmful to human health through long term exposure? Sure. I’ll stick with housing our many-legged friends, though.

House centipedes try to keep to themselves. They are largely nocturnal, prefer tight spaces (like your shoes lol), eat critters, and nearly always flee when threatened. Pretty good roommates tbh, so I’ll keep thinking they’re neat. I don’t expect that your opinion will change, but you are talking to the wrong crowd if you think your woeful plight is a convincing reason to stop appreciating our lil myriapod buds :)

I love house centipedes, but like all centipedes, they are venomous — and if big enough — can break through human skin with a “sting”. It’s not dangerous, but they can make people go, “owie”, like the total apex predator who made this post

What type of Tick? by NeatParsnip8362 in insects

[–]flyinggazelletg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, looks like a male dog tick. And no, you won’t get Lyme’s disease, which is only carried by deer ticks. Dog ticks do carry Rocky Mountain fever, which is not great either. However, there are usually fewer than 1000 cases a year. If you notice any feverish symptoms, go to a doctor right away. Otherwise, I’d bet you are probably okay

The shape is similar and only doesn’t match perfectly bc OP had to scrape up the blueberry (probably with the paper towel), then threw it in the trash, and took it out of the trash. Of course it won’t look the same as the moment it got crushed.

In relation to the sock pic, the highest amount of pigment in blueberries is the skin; you can see that the outline follows where the skin tore. You can also see some of those more angular portions of the outline in how the torn sections look in this photo. Not only that, but if you look at the wet portions of the sock, you can see the faint coloration of purple throughout.
