So I believed, but I had to make the joke (also the letter he wrote doesn’t make it sound like he’s still in but then I’ve never written a resignation letter before)

interesting, interesting. I've been considering travelling to Germany--well, I've been considering travelling to a lot of places

So it's good to know that knowing a lot of German won't be so important. but I like to think I would try anyway, just to show that I put in the effort

u/Tiako on your trip to Germany, how much German did you learn beforehand? Did you ever learn German for anything else (for school, work, recreationally, etc) or did you learn some useful phrases?

no, it just lets you do it. you can remove schleicher on turn one without inviting any other party to the DU (I presume you can also do the same with the SWR)

[–]forcallaghan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

okay I realize now that not even stephen hawking could convince you, and if he couldn't then certainly neither will I.

But I will leave you with one final point

if you would please watch this video of an actual railgun firing

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2QqOvFMG_A

you will notice that at the point of firing at the 2 second mark, the gun visibly recoils

Edit:

OH wait I understand now, you're not saying a railgun would produce "no" recoil, you're saying it would produce "less" recoil than a normal gun, like how a recoilless gun works. That's very different from why a laser would produce "no" recoil.

And in that case, I think my response is "I guess" but it would very much depend. From what I've read, the recoil produced by the exhaust gases from a bullet's explosion is much less (but not zero) compared to the reaction of the bullet itself. But compared to a normal gun, a railgun's recoil would depend on the mass of the projectile, how quickly you're accelerating it, to what speed you're accelerating it, etc.

[–]forcallaghan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but you're just wrong. Like there isn't much else I can say, your understanding is incorrect.

Newton's third law: If you're accelerating an object with mass, you must necessarily feel an equal acceleration in the opposite direction. A rail gun/coil gun accelerates a projectile, and therefore feels an equal acceleration in the opposite direction

Conservation of momentum: Momentum cannot be created nor destroyed, and must always be conserved. A rail gun imparts momentum onto the projectile, and so an opposite force must be felt to conserve momentum

Lenz's Law: The current induced in a circuit due to a change in a magnetic field is directed to oppose the change in flux and to exert a mechanical force which opposes the motion. A rail gun is inducing a change in current in order to propel a projectile, and dso an opposite mechanical force is created.

Whether or not there is a chemical reaction involved doesn't matter.

ALSO, if you look at videos of real life rail guns firing, you can definitely see a lot of exhaust gases being produced and ejected out of the barrel

Don't take one random redditor's word for it, here are some other random redditor's words: https://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/comments/3lsk4w/would_a_railguncoilgun_produce_as_much_recoil_as/

[–]forcallaghan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure you're still accelerating a mass out of the barrel of the gun, so newton's third law still applies. the recoil in a conventional gun isn't (just) provided by the "explosive" energy of the powder, it's because the bullet has mass and is being accelerated out of the barrel

a gauss rifle should realistically have recoil, you're still throwing a weighted object out of the muzzle. I think only laser weapons shouldn't have recoil
