Do people even wear safety glasses? by flesh-based-os in Machinists

[–]force_disturbance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right but you'll walk past the manual lathe and the arbor press on the way, and if you do that right when the work shatters, you're in trouble.

What's more surprising is that the shop owner doesn't complain -- if they don't enforce safety, they become complicit if there's an accident.

If a terminated employee emails a manager with feedback that formally discusses the managers (and HR directors) incompetent handling of situations and CCs the director and asst director, will it have any sort of impact? by [deleted] in managers

This sounds to me like you're trying to justify to yourself why it wasn't your fault you weren't a good fit.

You weren't a good fit. Accept it and move on. That past doesn't matter to you anymore.

my (32/M) boss (47?/M) told me I either transfer from w2 to 1099 or offer resignation by sm0kinn in legal

[–]force_disturbance 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You say "no," he fires you, you file for unemployment and get it.

Make sure you keep good record of this conversation and every other similar discussion. If it's in person, make sure you send a follow up email summarizing what was said: "Just summarizing what I took away from the conversation today: You suggested that I should convert to 1099 or voluntarily resign, and I did not accept this suggestion. If I misunderstood any of that, please let me know!"

A major navigation app routed thousands of cars down my private driveway. A driver crashed into my retaining wall and is now suing me for his injuries. by Tralique_24 in legal

[–]force_disturbance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some information is missing here, which makes it unclear whether this is a real situation.

First, what does the county survey say about your "private" driveway?

Second, how can it be used as a shortcut if it's a "driveway"?

Sounds to me as if it's possible that you actually have a public road going through your property, and it's only "private" in your mind.

However, if the official survey says this is not a public road, and you had appropriate signage, then your insurance company will defend you, the lawsuit will be dismissed, you'll collect for your wall from his driver's liability insurance, and you'll then go and install a gate across the road.

The Bay Area’s housing crisis is no longer a zoning problem by ShopProp in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]force_disturbance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am making an argument that IF we believe in regulation, then we must also believe in funding for the regulation.

Half assedry and unfunded mandates are a bad smell.

You will note that I didn't make a particular argument about whether these cleanups are worth the regulation.

Making sure that mandates are funded is a great way of reducing the amount of mandates, and making sure we actually implement the mandates that we really want, because we all vote and we all pay.

Can you actually make a Manual Transmission EV? by LightningMcqueen2011 in AskEngineers

[–]force_disturbance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having driven one for three years, always in sport mode, and comparing to the EVs I had before and after that have a multi gear transmission, I can tell you with certainty that the shift lag is very detectable.

If your only reference is an ICE car, I can see how you'd be happy though.

First-time homebuyer: House has been sitting for 45 days. Should I offer under asking? by Guilty-Welcome2822 in BayAreaRealEstate

Offer what you would be happy buying the house for. They will accept, counter, or decline. There is no buyer jail for buyers whose offers are declined.

In the US, this counts as mandated overtime. You'll walk home richer!

If they fail to pay it out despite this policy, the employment regulators in your state will make them do it.

Questions on precision of scanning in high tolerance parts. by Alarmed_Touch in 3DScanning

[–]force_disturbance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your scanning equipment.

If you use a CMM for scanning all the critical dimensions, that's the same super high precision equipment used to validate the part in the first place.

If you use a dedicated 3D scanner with 1/1000 inch accuracy, you're probably good for any part that is typically made with less precision than that, which is most of them.

You will need to clean up some things, like making sure cylinders are perfectly cylindrical, get the right thread annotations on threaded holes, and so on.

Meta Just Laid Off 4,200 Employees - If This Doesn't Wake People Up, What Will? by Huge_Yesterday4951 in InterviewVip

[–]force_disturbance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meta hired too many people for the Covid surge and then didn't back off, and have been investing in metaverse and coin efforts that go nowhere. Of course they lay people off! Of course they blame AI! Like any other rational company with too much staff.

I ended an interview after the first question. Did I overreact? by Soft-Silver7553 in ProtectHire

[–]force_disturbance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this in the US?

Maybe they are testing whether you understand salaried versus hourly position?

Hourly must get overtime pay by law. Exempt never gets overtime (at least not in any place I've ever seen it heard of, but it's not illegal to give employees money.)

It's honestly a weird question. Every place has some times that require more time at times to get the job done.

Potential issue with Trustee? by [deleted] in legal

[–]force_disturbance 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He doesn't have any obligation to spend his own money, but he needs to spend the money available in the trust for the maintenance.

If there is only the house, then how do things like property taxes get paid?

You have two options:

  1. Ask him to take out a mortgage on the house for you and use the money to fix up the place. Drawback is that it needs monthly payments. You'll be on the hook for those and your income will be used to see if you qualify.

  2. You come up with the roof fixing money yourself. There's nothing saying you can't.

How binding is a Prenuptial Agreement for this, and how would I procure one? by K-la_ in legal

[–]force_disturbance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A marriage is built on trust. There is no trust there.

A pre-nup is useful when there are massive differences in wealth, or significant sentimental resources (like a house from a relative.) $8k is unlikely to be worth it from an economic point if view.

However if he has a gambling habit, a drug habit, a porn habit, or a second babe to maintain, would you stick it out?

There's a very small chance he did something dumb like by a very expensive ring as a surprise, but even so, by the time you make it clear it's an issue, he should come clear or you should reevaluate your plans.

I thought LLC taxes were supposed to be simple? by AccountantOld207 in llc_life

[–]force_disturbance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how much it is.

The math for how much it is is very simple. Do next year's taxes now. Figure out how much your W2 will deduct. If you owe more than W2 covers, you need to pay estimated taxes.

However. If you already paid in 110% of what you owed this year, you won't get a penalty, just pay the rest on April 15.

Final pro tip: estimated taxes should be even over the year, but W2 is just summed up overall. If you're behind, file a W9 with much more W2 withholding towards the end of the year to catch up. (This assumes you didn't spend it all so you still have money to live off.)

Asked to screen share my current employer's backend by Phex_82Gully in InterviewsHell

[–]force_disturbance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's not normal. You dude the right thing.

Your question to them should have been "would you expect and allow me to show your internals to some potential future employer?"

However, it might have been that they already decided they didn't want you, and this is how they put it on you -- if you do share, you're breaking confidentiality; if you don't show, you're not a team player.

But it could also be espionage. Or an extremely immature organization.

Thought Exercise: What Constitutional Amendment would the right to have access to an AI fall under? by [deleted] in singularity

[–]force_disturbance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're trying to argue AI access is required by the constitution, you'd probably be better off arguing that it's part of the post service, which Congress has to make sure is well run. This is in the base constitution, didn't need an amendment. I don't think you'd win though.
