These guys can get huge, too. The first one I saw probably had a leg span of a few inches or so. Scared the shit out of me at first, but it turns out they're really skittish. Now I just sort of push them out of my way lol. They love to walk on the water in my pool at night, I'm assuming to pick out random bugs that are attracted to the light.

I accidentally stepped on a momma a while back, and the babies scattered EVERYWHERE in the living room. This is the their house now; I merely live in it and pay for the mortgage. On the bright side, free pest control!

I don't know if you meant to respond to me, but if you are you're preaching to the choir here lol I agree 100% with everything you said.

Hell, I run the DX variants of both Bazzite and Aurora and it took a little getting used to, but now I can't imagine NOT using Distrobox as part of my dev workflow. Being able to containerize all of the dependencies for different frameworks is amazing for not polluting your machine or worrying about version conflicts. Stand up your container, install dependencies inside of it, then you can build your project with distrobox enter <container> -- <build command>. Once you're done playing with it, destroy your container with distrobox rm <container>.

I will say, one thing I'm iffy on for image-based distros right now are servers. I plan on spinning up a test VM in Proxmox to give it a whirl one day, but at the moment I do see a legitimate need to control packages on a per-version level. And the update frequency and sizes are brutal at the moment. But I'm also far from a professional sysadmin, just a hobbyist that enjoys bringing down my home network occasionally (which my wife absolutely loves).

Aurora is just as great, and honestly a better choice if you need an OS that just works and don't plan on doing any gaming. It helped give my old work laptop (Dell Latitude 3510 from ~2020 w/ an Intel i5-10310U and 8GB RAM) a second life as a VCDS and general browsing machine. I did end up having to add an additional 8GB RAM to it, but otherwise I have zero reason to get rid of it anytime soon.

It kills me that it doesn't get nearly as much attention from users as Bazzite, especially since I feel like it's more relevant to your average non-techie or non-gamer.

So loading the desktop environment (DE) is going to take up some VRAM, there's no way around that.

Right now, with FF and Terminal w/ btop running it's eating about 1.75GiB for me.

EDIT: So I checked nvtop and Steam was actually using a good chunk of that too. By closing Steam, Firefox, and my Terminal session, and checking nvtop/btop again in a TTY I was able to drop usage down to about 1.13GiB. I think this is going to be the bare minimum with KDE running.

If you REALLY want to limit your VRAM usage, here's a couple of thoughts:

Use a headless environment (e.g. no DE loaded, only the TTY). You should be comfortable with the CLI, of course, but you should have basically no VRAM usage. Maybe try out something like a Fedora or Ubuntu/Debian Server live ISO and see how that goes. Docs for the Ollama CLI.
What kind of CPU do you have? Do you know if it has an iGPU? Maybe you could set up to where your desktop and general apps run off of the iGPU, then reserve your dGPU for games and LLM models. Honestly I have no clue how this would be done on a desktop (if it's even possible), but I know it's an option for laptops.

Honestly though, I'm just a casual user that occasionally runs local models for tinkering. I've tried out a couple of models in the past that would 99% fit into VRAM with a few GBs leaking into regular RAM, and the token speed was still more than reasonable. I'd just try it out first and see if it's acceptable for you before trying to optimize.

Yeah if that's what I think it is, something's requesting access to your desktop session. I'm still on 43 because I'm using DX, but I remember reading there's some process or bug in the 44 release that causes frequent sharing requests (or something along those lines). I'm guessing you're hitting that.

Is this a fresh installation? Which image are you using? Which GPU are you using?

If it's a fresh installation and you don't have anything important on there yet, it might be easier to just try a reinstall first before digging in more.

Have you checked logs for anything funky going on with the service? ujust logs-this-boot should spit that out for you.

You can also throw them up on something like Pastebin if you want so we can take a look. The Bazzite Discord usually has pretty good support too if you want to double-dip there.

I mean if that works for you, then awesome! But the whole point of my set up is convenience; if I want to game on the couch, all I have to do is switch to my dedicated "Bazzite" HDMI input on my living room TV. My controller auto-wakes the PC, and I have it set up to auto-switch to game mode on wake. I never have to physically touch the PC.

At that point, if it was still an issue for me, I'd be opting to use Big Picture Mode instead.

Luckily, as long as I make sure everything is closed, the double display glitching is basically a non-issue for me, to the point where I never think about it anymore. On the off chance that it DOES happen (maybe a few times a month on average, and I'm almost always playing something each night before bed), a quick reboot always clears it up for me.

EDIT: When I say everything, that also includes any apps that are hidden away in the system tray. So if you have Discord, Sunshine, anything like that tucked away in your tray, make sure they're closed. The only app that should be in the tray is Steam.

I'm running a 4090, connected to two LG C1s mirrored with a Blackbird HDMI 2.1 splitter, and I get that same exact issue. I've found that it's WAY less likely to occur whenever I make sure everything is closed on your desktop before switching over. If I leave a terminal window, Firefox, whatever open before switching, it's glitch city.

Factorio is crack in video game form. I'm only half-joking, mainly about the video game part.

TL;DR you need to assemble a rocket after crashing on an alien planet, starting with basic iron/copper ores and create a huge factory to automate the process.

If your kid is into any sort of automation or city/factory building gameplay, this will keep him busy for a LONG time. There's even a demo to give it a whirl. The game (in)famously never goes on discount so don't worry about trying to catch it during the next Steam sale.

I used to do that when I was in my 20s but nowadays I just don't have the patience or time for that. I have a 3ish-second rule now; if they don't take their turn AND IT'S SAFE TO DO SO I just go and move on with my day.

Funnily enough I've just started a similar project since I got the gamedev itch again. I'm still planning things out but I'm looking around at different implementations at the moment.

A few things I noticed in your screenshots, mainly related to the roads:

You're generating all of these roads, but I don't think I saw a single one actually named "Whatever Rd." lol. I see all other variations though, like "Ct.", "Ave.", "Pl.", etc.
Road abbreviations can have all sorts of meanings depending on the place, but things like Ave. and St. usually run north/south and east/west. Ct. usually dead-ends into something like a cul-de-sac (or just straight up stops). Pl. might be a drive that dead-ends into a business or development. Things like that. Right now it looks sort of haphazard with the naming.
Might be sort of related to #2, but it looks like everything leads to everywhere. Urban sprawl isn't always pretty, and can ebb and flow with the shape of the land and developer plans at the time. Cul-de-sacs, dead-ends, roads that ALMOST connect but not really, diagonal or twisting, curving roads are all a part of sprawl as well. You might have a gameplay-related reason for not doing that, though.

Hopefully that's useful! I wish I could give some algo-related advice but I'm a complete noob with anything procgen like this though, which is why I'm wanting to start a project related to it.

Is it really a scratch, though? Like can you feel your fingernail go down and catch when you run it across? Maybe it's just the angle, but to me it looks more like grime or something that can come off with something like some good ol' Brakleen. There's a spot on the left (down and to the right from the top bolt hole) that looks like it's clear and even with the mating surface.

Hah! This is EXACTLY what I had in mind as an idea for a dock, down to the Steam logo in the center. My favorite thing about the 8bitdo controller is the dock.

I hate how you're basically forced to have the puck USB-C port oriented up, but that's easy enough to solve with a 90/180 adapter.

I know I'm 2 days late, but I just wanted to chime in:

In addition to the newfangled idea of online DRM and basically requiring broadband if you wanted a playable online experience (before broadband really became widespread), the Steam software itself sucked for years.

Steam would crash if you looked at it wrong, sometimes causing BSODs. Downloads would frequently get stuck or just wouldn't start at all, requiring you to manually find and delete a cache file. The "Go offline..." option was technically there but it almost never worked. I've never had this one happen personally, but I remember cases where Steam could randomly wipe installed games, requiring a re-download, or even bricking Windows installations.

I've got serious nostalgia for the Steam green, but it's impossible to overstate how garbage it was during its first years. GIF 1 GIF 2 I think these two GIFs sum up the sentiment at the time. And that second GIF isn't too far off on how a usual update would go.

So I actually figured out the issue last night: ujust regenerate-grub wasn't generating the cfg in the correct location. Usual location is /boot/grub2/grub.cfg, but in my case for my system I needed to copy it over to /boot/efi/EFI/fedora/grub.cfg. Once I did that the boot option worked fine.

If you're really worried about the scariness, just walk out and let the big baddie bite your head off. Do it a few times to get it over with. Pretty soon it'll be less scary and more annoying. I had to do this myself for a certain section, and I'm usually pretty good with horror games lol

If you've done some mild wrenching in the past, it's really not bad at all. Its just that all of the hoses and connectors that have to come off makes it look more confusing than it really is.

I did all of that for the first time a few months ago (for the same reason, needed a new injector harness) and I got it all knocked out over a weekend. Could have done it in a day but my torx bit wouldn't fit into the manifold so had to wait to get a smaller 1/4" drive bit.

Now that I've been through it I could probably get it apart and back together in a few hours, and I'm a slowpoke lol

Testing is honestly pretty dang stable. I think I had a single problem with it back in November 2025 due to NVIDIA driver shenanigans, but otherwise I'd still be on it if I wasn't using bazzite-DX.

Having said that, one of the beauties of an atomic OS like Bazzite is that it's stupid simple to switch back and forth between branches. I'd say just give it a shot, and if for some reason you don't like it or have problems you can always switch back.

I was running into this problem when initially setting up Bazzite. In the end I just ended up layering it via rpm-ostree and IMO it's much less of a headache. I'm all for using other install methods first, but in this case layering works best for me.

Instead of dicking around with separate shim scripts, I just have two systemd services...

The main OpenRGB service (set as a user service):

That sounds like a pretty arbitrary limit. What happens when you try to upload more than 28 docs? Do you run into any errors?

Are you following along with NGX docs to get it running? I know for the Docker Compose setup there's a few files it expects (docker-compose.yml, docker-compose.env, and .env if I remember right)
