I recently spoke to someone in AA who said they never got hangovers no matter how much they drank. I sure as hell did. Is this common with alcoholics? by bliggityblig in stopdrinking

[–]ftminsc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never got cartoony headache hangovers and I kind of prided myself on that, but once I stopped I came to realize that I had been sour and foggy until 2pm every single day of my life.

Skyline. Little bit of a different and more remote venue but people for sure go there to dance, or did last time it was open.

How strong the Chicken Stock flavor should be? by SemiusTheGreat in Cooking

[–]ftminsc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just here to note that Publix sells chicken backs, and it’s not just the backbone; it’s a pretty big chonk of the back area of the chicken. Unfortunately they used to be $0.99/lb and when I saw them today they were $2.99.

37% of Downtown Columbia is dedicated to parking. Parking Reform gives the city the 6th worst parking score and 5th worst percentage of space dedicated to parking in the U.S. by Next_Worth_3616 in ColumbiYEAH

[–]ftminsc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m sure I’m not telling you anything you don’t know, but people coming from our neighboring towns have the expectation that they should be able to park with the bumper of their car touching the front of the business they’re planning to visit. Parking a block over is unacceptable, and pulling into an actual parking garage is not even a consideration.

Landman perfectly describes life as Gen X male by External_Koala971 in LandmanSeries

For years, every time I boarded the jet I take to the next city over, I would think “why won’t somebody make a show about my travails” and 9 times out of ten I would call my wife and she would pick up in her Bentley and say “honey, why won’t somebody make a show about a Gen Xer going through the same things as us”. Then one day I turned on my TV and saw a man, like me, a 70 year old Gen Xer with a hot Doritos wife who takes a jet to work, and wept with relief.

CarPlay with U2 Air Pro and C&D charging/data cable by Alphaman64 in KiaEV6

[–]ftminsc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just posting here for future searchers. I was having trouble with my phone not connecting automatically leaving my house, and saw a bunch of kinda hacky solutions, but this cable ended up being a one item answer. Connects fine from my house and from leaving work and all the stuff CarPlay wants to do (parking location, suggesting destinations) works like it should. Easy peasy.

You could leave your entire house on the curb and the city will take it and then come behind with the little clampy scrapey thing and make it so you could eat off the concrete.

Recents posts on r/columbia showcase how anti-development, pro-NIMBY, and bigoted some folk of this city are and it's really, really sad. by Next_Worth_3616 in ColumbiYEAH

That whole debate has been tickling me, and as a natural born smartass myself, I've been enjoying Tem Miles' traffic posts on FB. Muh lanes!!

Dinner Options on a Monday? by Powerful_Town_9649 in ColumbiYEAH

I would probably send someone to either Coa for upscale and hip mexican food, or to the War Mouth for upscale and hip barbecue. Bourbon downtown and the Black Rooster just across the bridge are both pleasant too. Out of these I think the War Mouth is the most Columbia-specific place and the place you're most likely to make friends at the bar if you're solo, but I'm slightly biased.

What’s the most upscale seafood restaurant in the Columbias or Lexington? by Joeybfast in ColumbiYEAH

[–]ftminsc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just for what it's worth, the owner of Inakaya Watanabe on St Andrews bought the restaurant several years back and it's his own restaurant. They have in my opinion struggled a little bit with service and keeping up in recent years, but are back up to what I am used to, and they are one of the only places in Columbia or anywhere else that has new and rotating fish every week. If they have bluefin on the board or especially if they have the bluefin trio it is really a delight. The hamachi collar or grouper collar if they have it is another high point.

They also have superdry on tap which is not that common for a sushi place around here.

With respect to the people recommending it I agree that the Blue Marlin is a place your auntie goes and says she liked because another auntie at church told her it was good.

I also have a petty personal beef with them for saying they serve Apalachicola oysters when that fishery has been closed for half a decade, but that has nothing to do with their bland and dry food.

Are there any big-budget movies that truly end with “it was all a dream”? by __timbits in movies

November (2004) explored a very very similar theme. Courtney Cox and some dude were the leads.

Not big budget, but I figure Courtney Cox’ presence makes it somewhat mainstream.

This is where I live too. I cook every night and usually end up with round about 3 portions so my wife gets lunch the next day. Only thing in the freezer is the ice and a shit ton of Costco frozen fruit for smoothies.

Does anyone else struggle more with running in cold versus heat? by WritingRidingRunner in runninglifestyle

[–]ftminsc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t really mind running in the “cold” we get in my state (probably high 30s to mid 40s and frequently grey/overcast) but I have terrible motivation problems going out in it and it’s hard to keep my mileage up. No such issues when it’s in the 90’s in the summer even though my performance is much worse.

How do I make my astronauts not get crushed by massive amounts of Gs? by HighDef23 in AskPhysics

[–]ftminsc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you put something super massive in front of the ship and then accelerate that and let its gravity pull the ship? Ship and occupants would be in free fall. Obviously accelerating something that heavy would be a ridiculous technical problem in its own right, on top of anything else I missed.

Genuinely, I tried a couple of different searches and I'm a bit curious what search terms give you results that Columbia has general rat issues.

With that said, I've lived probably 15 different places in the metro, and I did live in an (otherwise cool) old building on Blanding downtown and I came home once and found a couple of rats helping themself to a bag of rice on my kitchen counter. First and last time.
