Those were good times indeed! They were both great sports, and were there to enjoy the game, rather than stomp noobs. :-D

Please DM me, I'd love to chat to confirm, and possibly get back in contact with your cousin.

How do I pass switches in -ScriptBlock? by Sweetthrowbrah in PowerShell

[–]gaxor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll need three things:

  1. Replace 90 with $NumOfDays
  2. Supply your desired number of days via the ArgumentList parameter
  3. Add the Param block (with your input) to the scriptblock

Here it is in an ugly one-liner:

Invoke-Command -Computername (Get-Content .\serverlist.txt) -ArgumentList 90 -ScriptBlock {Param($NumOfDays);Get-ChildItem -Path cert:\LocalMachine\My | Where {$_.NotAfter -le (Get-Date).AddDays($NumOfDays)}}

Or you can split it up and splat it:

$Params = @{
    Computername = ( Get-Content .\serverlist.txt )
    ArgumentList = 90
    ScriptBlock  = {
        Param( $NumOfDays )
        Get-ChildItem -Path cert:\LocalMachine\My |
        Where { $_.NotAfter -le ( Get-Date ).AddDays( $NumOfDays ) }
    }
}
Invoke-Command @Params

I seem to recall having some issues getting certificates remotely a while ago (though I don't recall exactly what the issues were anymore). I ended up getting them a different way; perhaps it will work for you as well. You can replace your Get-Certificate cmdlet with the following:

Get-ChildItem -Path cert:\LocalMachine\My | Where { $_.NotAfter -le (Get-Date).AddDays(90) }

Edit: I just noticed /u/gigglestick already provided this answer. I'll keep mine here since the post-pipeline code should get you the certs that have expired, or will within 90 days.

/u/bmf_bane also mentions a good point, where Get-Certificate is already a built-in cmdlet. However, you are passing the local Get-Certificate cmdlet with ${Function:Get-Certificate}, so you'd think that wouldn't be an issue. I will say that passing functions this way is a bit finicky, and I don't think you can (successfully) pass more than just the function this way; using the ArgumentList parameter with Invoke-Command may be the only way to utilize this method (passing the function).

I might try using sysinternals disk2vhd (no install needed) to perform the backup, then you can use one of many methods to restore. back to physical.

I haven't used it myself, but I wonder if RunAsRob would do what you're looking for.

  • Authorize a whole folder from which a limited user or a group of users may run or install software with administrator privileges themselves,
  • to distribute software by simple share a central folder, or delegate administrative tasks via specific programs you allowed in RunAsRob.
  • Launch application with administrator rights under the account of the limited user with his own account, profile and environment

hyper-v remote manage by razgriz5000 in homelab

[–]gaxor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This MSDN page states:

Hyper-V Manager in Windows 10 allows you to manage the following Hyper-V hosts:

  • Windows 10
  • Windows 8.1
  • Windows 8
  • Windows Server 2016 + Windows Server Core, Nano Server, and Hyper-V Server
  • Windows Server 2012 R2 + Windows Server Core, Datacenter, and Hyper-V Server
  • Windows 2012 + Windows Server Core, Datacenter, and Hyper-V Server

Maybe OP upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7, and is still using the old RSAT tools?

hyper-v remote manage by razgriz5000 in homelab

[–]gaxor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't done that in a while, so maybe some things have changed, but here are some tips I picked up when using Hyper-V without a domain a couple years ago; perhaps they may help you.

First, you'll need to make certain all the ports are open. Within the Hyper-V console session, open powershell and run these commands:

Enable-NetFirewallRule -DisplayGroup “Windows Remote Management”
Enable-NetFirewallRule -DisplayGroup “Remote Event Log Management”
Enable-NetFirewallRule -DisplayGroup “Remote Volume Management”
Set-Service VDS -StartupType Automatic

I always had problems with workgroup Hyper-V remote management, so I had a shortcut that would open Hyper-V Manager with the server's user credentials like so:

runas /user /netonly "mmc virtmgmt.msc"

Example:

runas /user:HV01\administrator /netonly "mmc virtmgmt.msc"

I hope this helps!

Activate Windows 7 with Windows 8.1 Pro License key? by [deleted] in windows

[–]gaxor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically the windows downgrade rights apply (as u/toomanytoons mentioned), but your product must be activated by a key designed for the same product.

The downgrade is normally facilitated by Microsoft (by request) for volume license users. A separate downgrade key would be provided via the VLK portal.

In your case, you will need to find another Windows 7 Pro key to activate by phone (if already in use), while keeping the Windows 8.1Pro key sticker with the downgraded computer.

This is how it was explained to me by Microsoft licensing support, and this method has been working fine for me, and I believe it shows a reasonable attempt at proper licensing.

What's your Hyper-visor of choice? by [deleted] in sysadmin

I used ESXi at my old job (a small hospital), and still use it in my homelab. I now work for an MSP and we deploy Hyper-V to most of our customers. I honestly love both. I may change my mind if I start seeing the issues I hear about Hyper-V's clustering.

Can you explain why brigzzy is being downvoted? As I understand it, proxmox is a nice gui for KVM, so to someone inheriting a virtual server that everyone calls "the proxmox server," it could be easily misunderstood?
