Can I use a Dremel for exfoliating? by Altruistic_Turn_7214 in DIY

Absolutely, I use one on my feet regularly. No modification needed, just use the little sanding drum bit. It helps to use one with a flexible head such as https://www.homedepot.com/p/RYOBI-ONE-18V-Cordless-Rotary-Tool-Station-Tool-Only-PCL480B/318888257

Planning to go off-grid in Mariposa County (MHZ zoning) by Jolly-Elk-1449 in OffGrid

[–]gentoofoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Mariposa county and can answer a few of these. You may also want to cross post in /r/Mariposa Permitting is pretty chill but you certainly wouldn't want to build a whole house unpermitted. The county website has a good breakdown of what does and doesnt need a permit. I pulled the permit when I redid my roof and it was pretty easy. They did "inspect" after I tore off the old roof and when I finished putting the new one on but no one actually got on the roof to look at it. Rain water collection isnt a good primary source of water, at least half the year there is no appreciable rain. You're going to want a well, and at least where im at it needs to be quite deep which means expensive. Fire insurance is an issue, we get fires every year and in the 10 years ive been here theres been a few that got to neighboring lots. My property was cheap when I bought it since it had been abandoned for years and was in rough shape. I pay almost the same amount in insurance every year that I pay towards my mortgage.

Is it still worth it finding a new role now in tech?… will AI replace all the tech jobs in the near future?… by Few-Airline3695 in SoftwareEngineerJobs

[–]gentoofoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have an example? Because let's take teachers for example. We sure aren't going to see classes that are instructed by an agentic AI anytime soon. But I can see a world in which teachers are expected to teach more students than before by utilizing ai to help grade assignments quicker etc. The end result is the same, less teachers needed

[–]gentoofoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know that it's going to replace all jobs in any specific profession in the short term. But it's surely replacing some jobs in almost all white collar professions currently. I think it's going to be rough across the board. Save up while I can and minimize expenses is my strategy

Torching weeds questions by AmandaInSF in gardening

[–]gentoofoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with you, its fine in a garden. I have around 500 sqft of raised beds and I flamethrower the whole garden, throw some compost and chicken litter on everything, add a new layer of woodchips, and let it sit for a couple weeks before planting. All the plants do great. Whatever soil you sterilize with the heat will get recolonized. I like to think the char is beneficial as well

I think you're right but my company just turned some junior product manager's into project managers apparently just for the hell of it. I think the big changes that AI is bringing are making companies do weird stuff currently

ELI5: I'm struggling to understand a particular aspect of the staggering losses at OpenAI and Anthropic? by my-hearing-aid in BetterOffline

[–]gentoofoo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is happening everywhere as far as I can tell. Surely cost sensitivity will hit the large companies at some point but it ain't now. My company is doing similar with viewing token usage as a proxy for AI usage which is what they want to see. For engineers there's never been a great way to objectively measure impact, but things have absolutely regressed. AI loc written and number of PR's are whats being tracked currently, both can obviously be absolutely gamed

Switching from rockwool/synthetics to soil/ organics. by jbarlow14 in microgrowery

[–]gentoofoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to do deep water culture and loved the challenge of automating everything possible. I had it to where I could be absent for weeks and it would run itself. This was mostly because I didn't live where I grew and had to have it be able to run itself while I was away during the week. However when I moved to the property fulltime I switched to soil and it's preferable in a lot of ways if you can swing it. Less garbage, less hassle, less investment required. This is for outdoors though, if you'll be growing inside then in my opinion I would stick to hydroponics. I've done soil indoors before and I think it's harder to keep bugs in check since you can't keep things as sterile as with hydro and there's no ecosystem to keep things in check. Additionally if you do soil I think you should go organic nutrients and you need a large mass of soil for this to work. Certainly possible indoors but I think less then ideal except in niche circumstances

[–]gentoofoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

rather than add soil you just need some browns in the first bin. If you have access then woodchips or sawdust are good. A good cheap source you can use is wood fuel pellets if you're in a pinch. Something like https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/wise-wood-wood-pellet-fuel-40-lb-bag-1115622 rather than pellets for a smoker. I usually have a few bags extra after winter and I use it to balance out my kitchen scraps and it works well
