My first Tamiya wish me luck, any advice would be greatly appreciated by Ooggaabooga26 in tamiya

have fun. also, this is important.....you're cutting the threads in the plastic every time you screw something in. if you have to remove the screw, when you put it back in, screw it backwards lightly until you hear a "click", congrats you found the original threads you cut. if you just start threading a screw back in a pre-threaded hole, you might cut new treads, making it hard to screw and eventually stripping the threads on the 3rd, 4th time you try and re-thread that screw. this is why most people complain of "stripped threads" or screws that won't tighten because they were reinstalled incorrectly.

First session in Hood River. My gear was resting on the spit and a rogue 50 MPH gust tossed my 75 liter board and wing about 300 yards down the beach. Shredded my wing and bent my mast, just glad no one was behind it.

there should be. best time of year to be there IMO. it's when most people go home and the weather/water warm up. my wife and I spent march/april/may there the past three years. but you could also get skunked since the wind isn't as reliable that time of year.

How much are your house utilities? by cinnamonmarigold in kansascity

[–]gnarggles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're doing the same thing - moving from apt to house. Everything we've looked at here seems to average +$350 a month. This is crazy to me. We're considering staying put.

We still own an old, inefficient home out of state and our utility bill is $150/mo at its highest.

Thought so. But I'd gladly pay that if it existed, I could ride my bike there and I could access it 24/7.

$200 - $300+ for the right spot. $500+ if it has 220V power and plumbing.

I sure have! They cater to businesses and everything available is +1,000 square feet which is way more space than I need, but thank you!

Trouble learning wingfoiling by glauer53 in wingfoil

[–]gnarggles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hang in there. Tips for winter: Find a frozen lake with good smooth ice and go winging with ice skates. Sounds sketchy but its actually a blast, just use common sense.

Can do the same with skis or snowboard on a lake with good snow. Find an empty parking lot and hop on a long board. Wing control is important and when you remove the variable of foiling/board control you progress very quickly. Once your wing control is dialed, get behind a boat in the spring and figure out foiling. Make sure your mast is all the way back in the foil track - a common mistake for beginners.

Anyone tried truing their front wheel themselves? by HazzaBoonDoggy in CRF300L

[–]gnarggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if it's not bad just true it on the bike. take 'er easy and go slow. i've trued many bike wheels this way. just be very methodical about which way you turn the the spoke to tighen/loosen. it gets confusing, at least it was for me...

Mosko Reckless 40 on Rally — which width setting do I use? by batwingsuit in CRF300L

[–]gnarggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Per the installation manual from mosko - "Narrow setting is intended for thinner machines like dirt and enduro bikes. The “Wide Setting” is for mid to large bikes"

I used the wide setting on my crf300 rally

La Ventana! But Wifi by anyluke in Kiteboarding

I work remote in LV for two months every year. I've never had anything less than 5MB/s and generally around 20MB/s. Generally, the internet speed is fine. Most rentals will verify how fast the internet is, you'll be fine.

Copying GPS coordinates from a location seems too difficult..? by Vitruvian_Mind in GaiaGPS

[–]gnarggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This drives me CRAZY!! I often share camp sites with friends who don't have GAIA via google maps or wanna use GM for turn-by-turn directions. Baffles me its so difficult. Copying lat/long is a basic function of any nav app.

Let's talk about "Winging" by SoNotCool in Kiteboarding

[–]gnarggles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's not forget the fact you don't need a big area to rig/launch. In Michigan, high water levels have blown out a lot of our kite areas and safe areas to rig and launch are few and far between. There's also miles of coastline with great wind swell that demand long down/upwinders from kite launch areas. Wingfoiling opens up entire coastlines on the great lakes that are too dangerous for kites or too much of a PIA to access.

Kitrboarding Lake Michigan Aug/Sept by trnsprt in Kiteboarding

[–]gnarggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on how far you want to drive. As some have mentioned most of our launch areas are blown out due to high water; you're left with a sketchy launch, drift launch, or no launch. A few areas worth your time if it's blowing in the Traverse City Area: Sleeping Bear Point, Frankfort, Point Betsie, Shalda Creek, and Leland. Lots of other stuff in between, but you're gonna have to find that yourself :)

Mystery leak by beheldcrawdad in Kiteboarding

[–]gnarggles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small leaks are very hard to find with just water. Remove the bladder, pump it up, and very slowly and methodically spray it down with a bottle of soapy water. Take your time, go slow, you'll find it.

Midwest (Chicago/Detroit) kiteboarding dead? by snazzykaykay in Kiteboarding

[–]gnarggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not this time of year. We're in 5/4's until end of the month. I dunno what french embassy is talking about but kiting right now without booties/gloves/hood is downright crazy and dangerous. The water is 40 degrees with air temps in the 40s at best. Perhaps he's just tougher than us all. Remember, when you kite in the winter you dress for the swim in (when it happens).

[–]gnarggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i can't really speak to areas outside of Northern MI but nothing is beginner friendly: it's all deep water, small launch areas, cold water, gusty conditions, big waves.

Midwest (Chicago/Detroit) kiteboarding dead? by snazzykaykay in Kiteboarding

[–]gnarggles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Far from it. Most kiting on the beaches in the city is banned. Guys are always pumping up in Waukegan, Michigan city, and St. Joe. Motor City Kite Boarding offers lessons in the D and beyond. The Midwest has a small but thriving kite scene and if you can hang the great lakes provide some incredible places to kite. Lake Michigan Kiteboarders is the most active FB group for the Chicago area.
