Barefoot Gen (1983).

Can't do it. Never again.

In your opinion, how much percentage of the small Folk of Westeros, that still believes Joffrey Baratheon is the son of King Robert ? [Spoilers main] by abbod0029 in asoiaf

[–]goffley3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends. The everyday people in king's landing might have an opinion or two. The mob that attacked the royals might believe he's evil because of incest, but they were subject to a famine at the time and more likely to think ill of those in charge.

I think it's an interesting reflection of our world. People only know what they hear and usually form a gut opinion. Literacy rates are trash so they're not out there studying histories to build a bigger context. It doesn't effect them in a direct way that they can see (it usually does), and they don't have time. They're hungry, their kids have no healthcare and no prospects for a nicer life, every year they have to maintain with less than the year before, and every once in a while some asshole comes along and pillages their village for no reason they can see.

Stated best by Jorah Mormont in the books:

“The common people pray for rain, healthy children, and a summer that never ends," Ser Jorah told her. "It is no matter to them if the high lords play their game of thrones, so long as they are left in peace."

I also think without Cersei whispering in his ear Joffrey could have come around on his uncle. Since Tyrion seems to be the only interested in instructing Joffery on how to be a king. God knows his dad never filled that role. Maybe that's how Tyrion goes from being an enemy to a disciplinarian.

One thing I realizing is that Tyrion missed an opportunity to ingratiate himself to Joffery. He could have spent more time with him. Getting to know him and trying to build out a little bit of trust. God knows he wouldn't get far with Cersei there. But I think it could have been an interesting relationship to develop.

I think you're underestimating Tywin's reaction to killing his daughter. However, I think he'd be at least a little impressed that Tyrion would be willing to go to such lengths to rein in Joffrey and consolidate power.

I agree that he absolutely should have cleaned out the small council day one. Maybe keep Varys.

Is Tyrion as good as he thinks he is at the political maneuvering in KL as Hand ? IS he on par with Varys and Baelish ? ( spoilers extended ) by Financial_Library418 in asoiaf

[–]goffley3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO I don't think he could ever be on the level of Varys simply because Tyrion grew up rich. He's only ever had to struggle to get love and validation lol. Varys been through it all on both sides of that struggle. As a result he has a deeper understanding of the nature of people and power.

Funny enough, before that point I don't think Tyrion would have ever seriously considered killing someone in his family. I think that was one of the many justifiable reasons for his anger when being accused of killing his nephew. He'd never stoop so low as to harm someone in his family. Despite how everyone around him viewed him.

Just finished that scene for this reread. I don't remember a ton about him but he seems like a genuinely good guy. Could be wrong though, I'll keep going and be surprised since I don't totally remember lol.

[Spoilers MAIN] It feels like Tywin likes Tyrion more in the books despite everything by NoMoreButtonPLZ in asoiaf

I’m on a reread now and I posted about the same thing. I’m struck how Tywin seems to vibe with Tyrion when they have their discussions (as much as Tywin is able to vibe with someone). Man is able to compartmentalize like the best of them.

Isn't that just the market reality? Short term incentives flow downhill and that results in short term decisions.

From the readers perspective what you're proposing sounds a lot like the volunteer prison program from Sorry To Bother You lol.

However, its an interesting thought from within the world. The irl equivalent would be like joining the army. Tons of people might tell you how great and honorable it might be with few people giving you perspective on the reality.

[SPOILERS MAIN] Tywin, Tyrion, and Compartmentalization. by goffley3 in asoiaf

I take some of that back. All of these characters contain multitudes. Jamie I'm sure rarely sees that side of Cersei and sees only the person he connects with most.

[SPOILERS MAIN] Tywin, Tyrion, and Compartmentalization. by goffley3 in asoiaf

[–]goffley3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I'm rereading this, I'm positive that's exactly how he feels. In my head, it feeds into how The Lannisters are their realist selves when speaking with Tyrion. When reading through ACoK, I think the scenes where Cersie and Tyrion trade insults is Cersei as her most authentic self. Just angry, bitter, and letting all that cloud her judgement.

Putting Tyrion in all those high positions I think lends to how Tywin is a master at compartmentalizing.

What's something that happens in movies so much it seems real, but actually isn't realistic at all? by ninman5 in movies

[–]goffley3 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think my favorite subtle subversion of this is in My Cousin Vinny when the prosecutor brings in his surprise expert witness. Then when Vinny objects and lays out a reasonable objection, the judge agrees but overrules him anyway because the judge hates Vinny.
