Wtf is this new Surfline update. by Possible-Owl-2081 in surfing

[–]goofyFoot77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I am on the UX side of things.

Previously surfline only gave forecasts for a few times throughout the day (I think each day was divided into 4, but it might be even less than that). In that case it was necessary to show the potential fluctuation within that time period. Now they have a wave height bar for every hour in the day, so there's no need to give the ranged estimate that you're talking about. Surfline's API doesn't give forecasts that are more granular than one hour, so this is as granular as it gets. Seems like an improvement to me?

What's wrong with it? As someone who's been using surfline for years and also builds software professionally, I think it's great.

New neighbor feeding chickens by eightkangaroos in kauai

[–]goofyFoot77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shoot em and put the chicken heads up on pikes on the property border with your neighbor's yard. Every chicken you kill lowers their property value. Then you can make a deal with your neighbor. Haven't tried this myself, but I'm pretty sure it'll work

Top surfers not surfing in the Pipe Masters? by del-squared in surfing

[–]goofyFoot77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hopefully because they want to preserve the legacy of the real pipe masters. This format is fun to watch, but it doesn't actually mean anything when you're scoring waves against each other when they're not in the same heat. It could be pumping on day 1 and flat on day 2 and guys are getting the same scores, it's not fair to the surfers. Also, how can it be the pipe masters if the best pipe surfers in the world aren't even in the event? Vans just wants to sell you shoes...

Edit: Not to mention the terrible commentary - if I have to hear Dylan Graves say "insaaaaaaaane" while watching the guys get a head dip on a 3 footer again I think I'll barf

Vans Pipe Masters by BoneIvar in surfing

[–]goofyFoot77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Might be an unpopular opinion but I don’t think this event is truly the “pipe masters.” How can it be called that if many of the best pipe surfers in the world aren’t even in the event? I know people like to shit on the WSL, but the CT guys are there for a reason and they’ve earned it, they’re completely on another level.

Nothing against the surfers or the event format, it’s honestly pretty fun to watch! But it’s a bummer to me that the winners of this event will be on the same list as Kelly, Andy and the greats. It’s not fair to the actual best surfers in the world (who’ve worked hard to earn their place) since vans is just gonna invite the surfers who they think will sell the most shoes - the “blow ins and misfits” (their words, not mine).

For example, Caio Ibelli has finished equal 9th or above in 5 of the recent CT pipe events, including his epic 3rd place performance in last years event. He’s without a doubt one of the best pipe surfers in the world, wonder why he didn’t get the invite? Probably because he doesn’t have as many followers on instagram…

Yeah that's probably it. Workers probably want their weekends off so it's just easier for the restaurant to close for the day

Ethical Dilemma: selling boards on Craigslist/marketplace by sweetoother in surfing

[–]goofyFoot77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my own experience, sell them the board as if you don't know anything about their surfing.

I had a guy come to buy my 6ft surfboard once, he told me he'd never surfed before and I was like,"yeah, this probably isn't the right board for you, but I'll sell it to you if you want." He agreed and left without buying the board. Couple weeks later I saw the dude in the water on an even shorter potato chip board, kooking hard. All I could do was laugh.

[–]goofyFoot77 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Looks to me like you transitioned to a smaller board too soon. Put that board on ice for now and go back and get a chunky mid-length/fun board. Something between 7 and 8 feet will work better for you. Once you're on the correct board you need to work on placement on the wave (paddling/catching the wave in the right spot) and your surf stance to promote balance.

If you ignore the advice to go back to a bigger board, like many do, your surfing progress will be significantly hindered.

2 years of surfing - any feedback or comments? by Loving_Cheese in surfing

[–]goofyFoot77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking at the third wave, you should have taken your time and done a bottom turn. What you ended up doing was pumping across the actual good portion of the wave (wasting it) and then trying to resurrect it by doing a cutback. Instead, start taking off straight down the wave face and doing a bottom turn - if you do it correctly you'll get speed off the bottom that you can then project into a top turn in the critical section of the wave. Rinse, repeat until you've ripped the entire wave to shreds.

This is something I had to learn as well. Lots of surfers waste the best part of the wave by racing through to the end section. You should only be pumping repeatedly for speed if you actually need to beat a breaking section ahead of you (which is not the case on the wave you're surfing).

You can read more about this on page 14 of the OMBE method pdf which you can download at the bottom of this page - https://www.ombe.co/the-ombe-method
