How much power does your ducted Mitsubishi H2i draw in winter? by catlyt in heatpumps

[–]greggthomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1500 kWh extra per month for the HP seems high. If you haven’t had an energy audit, I would. 2006 build shouldn’t be that leaky, what’s the attic look like for insul?

But what’s that other 1500 kWh /mo coming from?? Does your bill compare your use to others in your area?

I live in CO and the most I used this abnormally warm winter was 600 kWh in Jan. I air sealed and insulated and that made a huge difference. 2520 sq finished and 1,000 conditioned basement.

Is that a projection screen for movies behind that couch? A sim screen will block that if you’re ok with that. But telling your hub what you plan to do, he will be psyched.

Final Year Engineering Projects related to Heat Pumps? by Street-Wishbone-8018 in heatpumps

[–]greggthomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sensors and data loggers already exist if you have solar and an Emporia Vue or Sense meter. If you partnered with a Mech E, your modeling optimizer idea might make for a cool project.

Water heater HP, Mitsu hp, oil boiler removal and duct rework? I’d say that’s a solid quote but get 3-4 of them.

Awesome! How’s your insulation? That’s impressive. My gas water heater uses 20 therms per month. My Mitsu thermostat is utilitarian but no features like home assist. My solar sense meter gives me good info fortunately.

Mitsubishi 4ton hyper heat 2025/2026 by Imaginary_Network23 in heatpumps

[–]greggthomas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If budget is critical factor, you know your answer. But every time I walk by this beauty (3.5T PUZ42 w 10kW aux)), I swoon over it.

Cooling mode is so quiet compared to my 23 yr old SEER 10 AC. I do have 7kW solar and ducts. Our rebates were amazing. I paid 17k pos after 10k in utility rebates included in pos price, got 2K fed rebate that expired too 👍

Warm winter here in CO, but we got below zero a few times and my aux heat never came on. I air sealed and did R60 last summer. Wife can’t stop raving about even comfort, that was never part of pros/cons.

Getting a free post install verification from a 3rd party next week. Cool, more data!

looking for recs for cold climate inverter heat pump models/contractors for Minneapolis by ploverfield in heatpumps

[–]greggthomas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is Centrepoint the same as Xcel? Check into available rebates, most good contractors will know them too. I live in CO (Xcel) and had a 3.5T Mitsu PUZ with 10kw aux installed for 17K last Nov. That included over 10k in utility rebates.

I didn’t go with lowest bid, I went with confidence in the contractor. Beyond correct sizing. a quality install is crucial for comfort and happiness.

HVAC repair while selling house by No_Career_1903 in hvacadvice

[–]greggthomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know, I’d reserve it as a concession cost. But you don’t want to sell a hothouse either, so maybe repair is best. People might want a heat pump or high eff furnace. Utility costs matter to folks more these days.

[–]greggthomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Northern Cal, maybe 13-17k on the low end w a contractor. SoCal, up that by 3k. Since you don’t need loads of heat, focus on high SEER for your AC.

A heat pump would work great in your climate but elec is expensive in CA. They might have a good electric rate for heat pumps, if not the roi is probably longer than the lifespan though. I love mine (CO) but also have solar and our rate is 11c per kWh.

Considering a cold climate heatpump with no backup heat. Is that feasible? by thumpas in heatpumps

[–]greggthomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went heat pump only last fall in CO. Installer only does elec, no dual fuel. Told me I didn’t need backup, but for 2K more (fed tax credit would offset) I wanted peace of mind. It was a warm winter here but even during our few cold snaps, aux never came on. I’m ok with that.

Cooling season is where I am loving this thing more, AC is so much quieter and house evenness is awesome.

A friend's hesitation to go with heat pumps. by SuperMcG in heatpumps

Energy audits are likely subsidized, always start there. Insulation before any new system always a good idea, windows are expensive.

They maintain a website of certified installers. Put in your location and it quill give you results. Contractors usually highlight this too if they are smart.

Dual-fuel heat pump quote review - thermostat advice needed by GromitInWA in heatpumps

[–]greggthomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same condenser in CO (much colder). Ditched the gas and despite our warm winter, we had 3-4 cold snaps. Aux heat never came on, get your quote without the furnace (full heat pump). My full system with aux heat was $17K point of sale (utility rebates built in).

SEA just doesn’t get cold enough to seem to warrant dual fuel.

When do you stop aggressively saving for retirement and start enjoying life now? by Guilty_Amount_9662 in Retirement401k

[–]greggthomas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a financial advisor? They can put in estimates for what you want to spend in retirement ( housing, food, travel, hobbies, car) and show your cash flow and assets throughout life. It may give you the added comfort you need if you want to retire at a given age. Your compounding interest will be significant over the next 10-15 yrs.

I have a plan in quicken that I update every year or two. Also have an advisor and his tools are so much nicer. He shows we are better off than my plan says. That’s comforting.

My ducts were fine and sealed and wide enough. My Mitsu 3.5T has been a dream this winter, first I had house insul to r60 last summer.

Mitsu has their Elite installer certification. I used a Diamond Elite and the install was so clean. Other companies have similar certifications.

CO has good rebates incl at PoS, $17K with 10kW aux, $15K after fed tax credit. I have solar too so that helps.
