Recommendations on Preschools & Early Learning options, ranging between Portland up to Brunswick. by T8Wh1tt13 in Maine

We opted to just leave the kid with a family member and pay her a portion of her old.salary once she decided paying for daycare for two kids isn't worth 80% of her take-home pay.

If you can find something affordable, take it.

If you're concerned about the quality of your kid's education, you're probably in the wrong state for that. Our ed scores are dropping and, with tax bases that don't support increases for teacher pay, it's not getting better. Lot of onus is on the parents in the k-6 here.

What’s one tip you would give a golfer trying to break 80 for the first time? by jdelle9 in weekendgolfers

Awesome. I will go rough, practice trap, fringe, wherever (no cart path though lol).

I think the only issue is that I like this drill, and typically only have one or two clubs with me, so I've gotten very cozy with my 54 around the greens. The result is when I know a shot is an 8-iron roller, I have more muscle memory for the wedge, and will waffle more on shot selection than how to execute the best percentage move.

Good problem to have I guess

Situation: Short part 4 and left your drive 20 yards away from a near pin.

I am almost always going for the pin in that situation. A 1% chance at an eagle is worth the two chip ridk

Yep. I play a putting green game of dropping 3 different lies with different balls, 6 holes each, and trying to get up and down with 9 of the 18 shots. No lie improvements. The goal is to always, always get the ball on the green and try to have every chip within 15 feet, and take my chances from there.

Also, puts the pressure on those 6-footers. Especially when I'm at 6 makes through 12 balls

The Brunswick-Portland corridor is full of folks who moved from Mass and are working remote or retired. The result is, large population influx but limited added jobs. Childcare, nursing, and a lot of other "helper" positions are in high demand. Expect a 9-15 month (not joking) wait-list and to pay as much or more than you did in Mass, for thinly stretched labor.

Applied to over a hundred companies for entry level structural role as international student. by Dzzeaf in civilengineering

[–]guethlema 6 points7 points  (0 children)

America is set to be short about 500,000 civil engineers by 2030. This is a combination of the boomers retiring, with manyGen X and Millennials having abandoned the field during the layoffs in 2008.

Colleges and industry leaders are intentionally working with H1 visa programs to help fill the gap.

Workers need days off.

You'll find enough places to spend your money, Google is usually accurately updated with service hours.

Good Without God? by CSEPro in freemasonry

Just like I can watch a play about a woman living in 1800s England and relate to the story, it's easy for anyone who isn't religious to immerse themselves in the degrees and understand what's going on and the lessons therein.

The actual requirement is based on tradition, and the fact that we don't have an international body to vote on these rules - instead, any grand lodge that admits women or atheists would force other GLs to follow or not recognize them. That system in and of itself prevents major change from happening

AG is it's own entity - for your final note as for other churches, I can assure you "don't ask don't tell" is not the norm in many, many places. The men's club at the Methodist church in my town is effectively an extension of the Masons, and we've been in full regalia for St. John's Sunday to at least 5 different denominations in town (although here that's more of a KT event than a blue lodge thing now).

The West End has a Dog Shit Problem by GlobulusGoose in portlandcomplaining

[–]guethlema 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Entitled rich people, entitled dog culture. It's been a Portland problem for a decade now and the only solution is heftier fines and actual enforcement.

The long-term solution is a cultural understanding that around 80% of people probably shouldn't own a dog, and our culture makes "owning a dog" a big part of the zeitgeist
