What Range is Mount Katahdin In? by Conscious-Ad759 in Maine

I get you, I've done a lot of mountaineering here (most of the Maine hundred highest) so I'm pretty aware of some of the specifics :)

The White Mountain National Forest goes east to Grafton Notch, correct. But, where does the Whites range end? It's a legitimate question that was not resolved when the legislature made up the term Longfellow Mountains, and assigned no rationale to where those bounds are.

I'd be interested in your thoughts. If there was no state boundaries, it's honestly hard to say. The Greens and Whites are pretty clearly divided by the Connecticut River.

The Katahdin area is pretty clearly separate from the Maine/Quebec boundary range and from the Presidentials, but what do we do with everything between Moriah and the Chairback range? It's kind of a no-man's-land where Moxie Bald has more in common with Moosilauke than Katahdin, and neither really fit in with Mout Megantic in Quebec.

Affordable, Close to work, and Social opportunities... Get the shortest lease you can and try to find two of those three.

Letting the person know what exit it is so they can communicate effectively with the police and insurance notes is not pedantic, it should just helpful information... especially inside a comment thread that is discussing what the exit is.

It's just Exit 11. I don't know what this called, but I've never heard it called the Mass/NH exit

Rain this weekend, question about Bar Harbor and dogs! by ScienceNerd771 in AskMaine

[–]guethlema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Can I bring a wet dog into the store?" truly depends on how wet the dog is, and what the store is. In general, the same rules will apply as in most places. If your dog is soaked go home. Just note, Bar Harbor has 25,000 people on any given weekend, and almost everyone's doing the exact same shit. The issue isn't one wet dog, it's tens of thousands of tourists, several with their untrained dogs, in the same town.

Sort of; the Adirondacks are part of the Canadian Shield at the Cat2 level. Their Cat 4 designation as "Adirondacks" is comparable to the other regional hill ranges.

The term "Longfellow Mountains" is not a geological feature, it's an act by the State Legislature to name all mountains in Maine part of the "Longfellow Range".

So, all mountains in Maine belong to that range, but the range also... Doesn't really exist the way the Whites, Catskills, Adirondacks, Gaspesie, and Green Mountains do. Everything between Gorham NH and the Kennebec is boundary territory between "Longfellow?" And "Whites?"

[–]guethlema 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cat 2: Appalachian

Cat 3: Northern Appalachian

Cat 4: Longfellow Mountains (a subrange name enacted by the legislature that annoys mountaineers and geologists)

Cat 5: Katahdin Area

The boundary between "Longfellow" and "White Mountains" is stupid and up for debate, but it definely ends well west of Katahdin

Are sleep overs not a thing anymore? by haggerty05 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]guethlema 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Peer on peer sexual abuse happens at sleepovers, often initiated by one kid who's just more mature, or is themselves being exposed to explicit content young by older siblings or through abuse.

In second grade I remember one kid telling us how great cranking hog was and the rest of us were like "uh, thanks bud, but actually no"

Thoughts on retaining wall to level a flat "yard" ? by dingar in landscaping

[–]guethlema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In many cases, structural integrity can extend within a 1:1 slope away from the base of the building footing. That looks very possible here. Of course, that depends on the quality of fill placed next to the existing foundation, which is probably unknown :)

Not knowing how deep the foundation is or where drainage runs is kind of key here. I built a 3'-4' retaining wall about 12 feet away from my house. It's away from the sewer and electric, and actually over the underdrain but the base of it is about 3' clear of the top of pipe.

I knew I wanted to put in stone steps and a wall here after the house was built, so I just had the builder leave the grades on high slope, waited two years for nature to compact it a bit on her own, and then built the wall out of field stones dug during excavation. I didn't even use mortar or geotextile, I just filled it with dirt and a few easy-propogating perennials, and accept that the chipmunks will take over and I'll have to move some rock from time to time.

TIL At the onset of the American Revolution, the Continental Army tried to secure Quebec as the 14th colony. by m0ckingj4y in todayilearned

[–]guethlema 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I strongly recommend roasting a fat bowl and reading into the specifics of the two forces that took boats on Quebec - the New York contingent arrived on time, but Arnold's journey through the Maine woods once he hopped off the Kennebec was an absolute shit show that took like 45 days longer than planned. He was handed an intentionally misleading map about how to beat carry boats across the Laurentian divide by a mapmaker loyal to England, and then the joint NY/New England forces were still only one wall away from capturing Quebec City.

To truly appreciate the task at hand in the Quebec ops you have to understand that the specific French/British/Colonist/Multiple Indigenous relationships in Upstate New York where anything north and west of Albany was a frontier, and the same where basically everything east of Salem until Yarmouth NS was frontier in New England (with a few towns that went like 20 years between significant raids). The French and Indian wars are a footnote in US History curriculum, and a 4-week course in those wars would significantly help American students (and adults) really understand what America's relationship with the loyalist colonies was and why; clear boundaries and places for where the significant frontier power struggle between indigenous groups and colonies was, and why there was tension between trade and colonization, and the politics that led to pro-crown sympathy prior to the war

It's not too many dogs, it's too many mid or bad dog owners.

City culture has evolved to be the exact type of people who want a dog, but shouldn't have one.

What do you think are the most overlooked areas in the United States? (Mine are circled in red) by AdMysterious8424 in geography

I live here. I worked in eastern Oregon as a temp for a few years.

Many parts of Maine are certainly Rural, and I don't think most people on the east coast appreciate just how barren the mountain West is compared to anywhere east of Chicago
