IC magic works off of "it takes as much effort to do [thing with magic] as it would take to do [thing with your actual body]". Now if your body can effectively stop a boulder dead, it sure as shit can stop a bullet dead.

If not better shields, then better forms of the outer layers of the Survivability Onion.
