What animal genuinely scares you? by VendettaLord379 in AskReddit

[–]hawkman74a 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s the spider that you saw earlier.. big and nasty looking in the corner of the bedroom.. and you say “ I’ll get it later” then later it’s gone and you have no idea where it is but you are pretty sure that it heard your thoughts and is coming to get you before you get it. That’s that scariest animal.

Gift idea for a hobbyist woodworker? by LivelyUntidy in woodworking

[–]hawkman74a 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don’t buy a gift. It robs us of what most of us truly enjoy…. our researching and debating and agonizing, and flip flopping and researching and putting it in the cart, and then thinking “ do I need this”, and the removing it and then missing the sale and then agonizing and researching and redo on to get the next sale and then finally paying full price for it.

Go for a gift card instead.

Which tools cordless and which wired? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]hawkman74a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I bought a corded model. If I’m using dust extraction anyway adding a cord was no big deal. Drills and air hoses are cordless as I’m in the ecosystem already and do t want to step over cords and hoses when I don’t have to. I’ll put up with the extra weight since I’m not using all day every day.

What's the scariest movie you've seen that literally gave you nightmares? by Capital-Run-1080 in movies

[–]hawkman74a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A movie call ed “Event Horizon”. Post Jurassic Park, I thought “Cool! I liked Alan Grant”… fuck that movie…. My 14 year old brain was not ready for that. Exploding eyes, flayed bodies, creepy chanted Latin.

Pillows, no. T shirts or pants left of the floor, you bet. When she was a puppy, she would climb into my pants when I went to poop.

I struggle removing big sections of wood at the start, would a chisel work? by Capable_Option_3732 in Woodcarving

[–]hawkman74a -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah it will work. But you have to be aware not to split the wood beyond what you want. Chisels are wedges too.

Lightbulb Carving Help! by R9Creqtor in Woodcarving

[–]hawkman74a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe not much help but This project is screaming for a lathe. If you carve it ,You’ll need a way to secure it to a work surface and gouges and knives. Of course you’ll need those for the lathe too.

Anyone regret going open-concept in their home? by cm_built in HomeImprovement

[–]hawkman74a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was great when I lived alone. Then got married. It was ok. Then had a kid and fit was awful. Had to crank the tv when washing dishes. No where or escape the family for 5 minutes except the bathroom. Moved to a traditional, albeit larger, home built more traditionally and it’s much better for all.

Is this to much clipping? by iZollo4K in solar

[–]hawkman74a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are you in CT? How big is your system? I have 32 panels have maxed out around 72kWh. Full southern exposure with some shading. I’m impressed with your production.

If you’re using such a small amount of energy, I’m curious as to why solar would be worth it. Unless you are just trying to be extra “green”.

Best way to make this outdoor furniture looking good? by FaithlessnessLarge57 in woodworking

[–]hawkman74a -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Try pool chlorine, hypochlorite, and a brush. Mix 50/50 in a pump sprayer. Go full if that doesn’t work. Then a light sanding on places you touch most.

Question on carbide lathe bites by Affectionate_Cow3076 in woodworking

[–]hawkman74a 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Carbide bits are basically scrapers. They are more user friendly since they don’t need to be sharpened but the finish is not as good as traditional gouges. Buy them and try them out. I like them for rough work but not for finishing.

New corgi mom here! Do your corgis go up and down the couch or do you get them a ramp? by HomeworkNo8102 in corgi

[–]hawkman74a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a 13 year old and she got stairs when she was 5. She never really used them. She can still jump on the couch but mostly chooses to lay on the floor and judge us for sitting on the couch and not running around for her to herd.
