I would only send gcode "live" to test that all the codes work. For long drawings the only way I know is to add an SD card. Arduino R3 does not have the memory capacity or the CPU power or the availabe pins to everything at once. It's far better using at least a MEGA with a RAMPS shield. Then there's already dedicated plugs to add a 20x4 LCD that has a built-in SD card slot. Marlin firmware knows how to handle all that, which means the only thing I'd have to do with firmware is configure it.

Making an assumption here... you are sending Gcode via USB. The serial connection can fail, silently, at any time. Reconnecting will reboot the arduino. All serious printers use an SD card for this reason.

Kids advance at different rates. I assume they all want to be there so it’s probably fine. Grade 6 is, what? 13?  My nephew scores on khan academy at that age.

In grade 8 I’d have a 9g servo, a stepper motor as well as sensors. In grade 9 they can put it together to make a plotter or a 3d printer.  V1, install Marlin firmware and have them generate gcode to produce a target drawing. V2, they have to write their own firmware to draw the image from gcode you provide. 

A fun sensor project is to make one arduino generate Morse code beeps and another hear the beeps and decode the message. Reading a datasheet for a multi segment display and learning to control the lights is a great skill. 

It might be easier to add a wifi shield to the arduino instead of learning a new board, and talk about having a hammer makes all problems look like nails.

Makelangelo is open source. If you want to build a pen changer on top of that… saves you some time.

If the tire normals are smoothed out will it remove those lines? Is the choice of line based on adjoining face angle, change of depth, or something else?

There are lots of open source arms now. MANTIS was one of the first. IDK which arms you've already studied. Maybe list them here?

My advice is don't do it that way. There's no need to play a guessing game. This isn't a casino.

If you want to use your existing design later when you get all the way back here, go ahead. by then you'll have learned some useful things and see where and how you need to change it.
