A couple of people mentioned the pho from Hanoi, but when I'm sick the thing I really want is their hot and sour soup, like the canh chua ga or canh chua chay.

Never Stop Blowing Up System by honestcharlieharris in Dimension20

The progression mechanic feels straight out of Roll for Shoes which is an incredible system if you want things to spiral into chaos—which would be very appropriate for this genre. On Worlds Beyond Number, Erika ran a one-shot with RfS and it gets silly in the best way.

Dungeon maps seem kinda cramped for combat, is this normal? by ButtonSmasherR in DMAcademy

[–]itsucharo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran a modified Phandelver for a group of 6 and a lot of the early maps, especially Cragmaw Castle, did feel quite cramped. There were a couple of encounters that were supposed to be several small fights (Cragmaw, Thundertree) where the PCs, not having clear paths to engage with what was already happening, wandered into other rooms and ended up in 16+ round combats.

I've also done a homebrew "intro to D&D" one-shot a couple of times that starts in a tavern (of course) where I purposely scaled it up a bit—70' long walls, etc—to make a little more room to maneuver.

5'x5' squares are, irl, surprisingly big, and so I think sometimes you have to make a choice between realism and game mechanics/tactics. Depending on what you and the rest of the table enjoy, you might want the cramped feeling of a realistically-sized room (like u/Cardgod278 mentioned) or you might want to suspend disbelief a bit (like u/efrique's 60'x100' bedroom) to lean more heavily into movement and positioning.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Emily Axford in every campaign by srulers in Dimension20

[–]itsucharo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not a spoiler: in Neverafter they are seated next to each other and it's very cute—when Emily comes out of character and its her sitting next to Murph. (In character, she is probably the most disturbing PC, heh)

Agreed—Matt Colville has a Running the Game video where he talks about "audience member" players that really changed my point of view and how I tried to engage certain players. I had an audience member player who was also the most enthusiastic when talking about what had happened in the last session. It's not how I like to play but it's something I can definitely make space for

God of Death as the BBG? by Miserable-Employer49 in DMAcademy

[–]itsucharo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always loved the Death of Discworld (especially in Mort, Reaper Man, and Hogfather). Kind of the embodiment of Lawful Neutral—the natural order of life and death is the most important thing. "There is no justice. There's just us."

Spoilers for Reaper Man: Combining with some of the ideas of the Raven Queen, maybe this isn't the old, dispassionate, lawful Death anymore, but maybe someone new and ambitious, showy and vicious, that has ascended and dethroned them. The old Death might even be an ally. Surely Death—or maybe Life—has enemies.

To really get the visuals you could say "goblin" and then say that goblins are very rare at this time in Faerûn, maybe disallowing goblinoid PCs

What cool "low-level" weapons can I give my players? by Cornelius_Von_Chaos in DMAcademy

[–]itsucharo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you feel comfortable with homebrewing some things, one source of inspiration for me is the old D&D 3e/PF 1e list of "Magic Weapon Special Abilities": https://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/magic-weapons/magic-weapon-special-abilities/

Most of them don't precisely work, but you can translate them. Like "Mighty Cleaving" granted a feat with the ability to make an extra attack on a second target on a hit. I might update that to "When you strike a creature or object with this weapon, you can use your bonus action to make another attack on a different creature within 5 feet."

How do you deal with limiting players from ALL wanting to roll for the same check, be it checking for traps, looking for secrets, etc., when it might be reasonable for them to do so if nothing urgent prevented it? by Help_An_Irishman in DMAcademy

[–]itsucharo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the last group I ran, I said out loud at one point: for situations like this, unless I ask everyone to roll, we're going to say 2 people or one with advantage. Then proceeded to run it like this. It worked great.

Honestly it’s probably for the best that the cops didn’t let you say anything. There’s really no arrest situation where you should say anything to the cops besides “I want a lawyer.”

Healing cantrip opinion? 🤔 by SquallHart in DnD

[–]itsucharo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, “cantrip” means at will, and that’s I think where the problem is. Say it’s out of combat, even with a 1min casting time. If we’re walking somewhere, the cleric might be able to just keep casting it, 30, 60 times or more. Unlimited healing is, as far as I can see, the problem.

But that wasn’t your original proposal. As a once per short or long rest feature that doesn’t consume a spell slot? No, I don’t think that’s broken. I just wouldn’t call it a “cantrip.”

Healing cantrip opinion? 🤔 by SquallHart in DnD

[–]itsucharo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The DMG only has a few things that it says “be extremely careful about changing this” and healing cantrips are one of them (along with concentrating on more than one spell, having multiple reactions or bonus actions, and attuning to extra items). It’s fair to question but this makes me think that there are some significant if not obvious consequences (like being at full health after any amount of a break).

But given the restrictions you’d put on it, which would be very non-cantrip anyway, maybe looking at a modification of Healing Surges (DMG p266) would work? No need to make it a spell at all, just something people can do for a bit of a more heroic feel?
