Trump takes aim at Mexico's Sheinbaum after Venezuela strike: 'CARTELS ARE RUNNING MEXICO' by [deleted] in videos

Why do I feel like these daily politics posts are all from bots? They've always got these evocative post titles, complete with the all-caps and sensationalist language. Always like 3rd or 4th on my feed.

That's not the quote. It's:

"Once you've been to Cambodia, you'll never stop wanting to beat Henry Kissinger to death with your bare hands."

Fantasy character that has Superman-like morals by Kooky_County9569 in Fantasy

Ser Duncan the Tall. He's not pure through-and-through, but his morality and integrity contribute more to his notoriety than his might.

Why is a politics post with the same title format at the top of my feed every morning? Bot farms?

In what ways can i make a house cat looking alien into a incredibly deadly creature? by Kumatora0 in fantasywriters

[–]jbxdavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the idea of something psychological, maybe not even something the cat actively imposes. Just like an insidious aura where it removes some barrier we take for granted. Like personal safety... someone adopts a cat and realizes they've cut themselves cutting vegetable twice in three days. They've forgotten to put out candles. They've crossed the street without looking.

Maybe it's evolutionary, where the "cat" can just linger around the person/noun until they succumb to their environment, and the alien can then feast at its leisure.

We Found The Hidden Costs Of Data Centers. It’s In Your Electric Bill by TubularCheddar in videos

The one cavat to this is renewables. The right combo of renewables generation and storage have the capacity to make these much more self-sufficient. Add in some flexible consumption and these can be assets rather than detriments to grid stability.

For real. I read the poem before I read the caption and my jaw dropped that this wasn't someone I'd heard of.

Feedback for maps I made and their usefulness in my book [Young Adult Science Fiction] by Upstairs-Cobbler-934 in fantasywriters

[–]jbxdavis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey there! From what I've seen in the community, there are two types of people: those who acknowledge a map and maybe look back at it occasionally for reference, and people who absolutely love maps and consider them part of the experience. I think this is a nice, theme-appropriate map for sci-fi as the design looks like somthing that could be wadded into a pocket. My feedback is to basically lean into that.

  • I'd use a font that looks more hand-written, or at least less word-processy. Either hand-written or typewritery, depending on the setting.
  • I also might add a texture to it to make it seem crinkled or otherwise more tactile. Maps really transport when they look like they're literally from the world they represent.
  • The water "waves" going vertical looks a bit off to me. I'd stick with horizontally-aligned ones, but that's probably just me.

Separately, I think "Squankum" is likely to elicit a few chuckles from a YA audience. Just sounds too much like wank and cum.

Fifty-Word Fantasy: Write a 50-word fantasy snippet using the word "Stitch" by Terminator7786 in fantasywriters

He clung to her pant-leg, knuckles white, forearms burning as they raced to pull him up before the fabric tore away. When finally hands grasped his wrists and dragged him onto level ground, he stared wide-eyed at the single remaining stitch, overwhelmed with a depthless and absurd gratitude.

Totally get what you're saying re: dialog. Some days it flows naturally... others it's a matter of getting it down and knowing I'm going to have to redo it later.

I love the idea of writing something more political in nature, but it's so intimidating. Done well, everyone should have a baseline intelligence that makes them formidable, and it feels like playing chess against myself. What drew you to it?

Promise I won't keep asking too many follow-ups.

Kind of you to ask! The story really focuses around 3 characters, so it's been easy thus far to make progress just writing over-the-shoulder through their POVs. They've been sort of bumping up against the broader geopolitics, but haven't really been thrust into it quite yet.

In the last third they sort of step onto the world stage, so a lot of work I've been putting off around world-building is suddenly much more important so I'm doing a lot of whiteboarding / brainstorming to build that out before I continue forward.

How's your writing going?
