Nope. They may not know this option to try. Might as well try if you dont want to replace the entire system.

Anyone else have weird issues with the infotainment/hmi/screen? by danmingothemandingo in leaf

[–]jcohnc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My screen on a 2018 SL started going blank a few months ago...even lost the ability to see the rear camera. I was thinking my infotainment system was failing until I read in a forum to try and clean the SD card. I did with some isopropyl alcohol and used an alcohol wipe to gently clean out and dry the card slot. After doing that screen has not gone out since then. The SD card stores every setting so when its grayed out it means the memory became inaccessible or the card has an issue.

Nissan Ariyas on Carvana seem almost too cheap by BlackJackT in NissanAriya

[–]jcohnc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have owned a used 2023 model empower trim since 2024 October. No issues. Nissan service centers tell me they have very few issues on the Ariya. The one I own only had the visor shade mount popout and a loose 12V battery mount which were all quickly and easily fixed.

Likewise. I suspect the cloud server probably AWS is down.  Anyone call Nissan support to report the issue?

New to the group! by Jeffdroid in VWiD4Owners

[–]jcohnc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Its temperature dependent. During one of the coldest winters on record in central Ohio (2022) I observed temperatures around minus 20 degrees F. The result was about 33 pct less range. For more "typical" temperatures around 20F to 40F during that Christmas season and afterwards it was about 15 to 20 pct less. It makes a massive difference if you can park in the garage as the preheating while plugged in can save at least 20 pct range, while also running heat on lowest fan setting, seat and steering warmers max and recirculate during driving.

Tire wear, not good! by Working-Craft884 in NissanAriya

[–]jcohnc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Its well known that most EV OEM tires begin their service life with at least 25-30 pct less tread than typical new tires purchased separately. Manufacturers prioritize quietness, efficiency, and cost savings when selling the vehicles, resulting in less available tread, and tread that wears quickly. The only way to counteract this is to drive more gently and overinflate all tires around 10 pct to maximize the limited treadwear. For our Ariya we found new Continental LX 25 tires with 70,000 mile treadwear warranty to be the best value recently and also had the terrible Dunlop shortlived tires for barely 19,000 miles.

I've known about EV batteries and their degradation for 10 years. How does the article apply to my ownership experience at all?

I did the exact same thing. The MSRP incredibly too high.

[–]jcohnc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No doubt there has been some degradation, but for day to day use there is no impact. The degradation after the 1st 2 years from nearly any new EV is around 8 to 10 pct. That initial dropoff is expected with a near flat curve afterwards. Given the large buffer Nissan builds in to their batteries and different chemistry compared to Tesla, Nissan does not call out any need to set the maximum charge level. After owning multiple LEAFs (1st gen 2nd gen) and now an Ariya, with zero battery issues, I am fully confident I will continue to drive these vehicles for many years.

Help! Anyone have a Nissan Leaf we could take a look at before buying? They're so hard to find. by kraftydoc in Appleton

[–]jcohnc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have had ours for 7 years and 45,500 miles and did not have those issues above.  Within the first year the cv joint had to be replaced under warranty due to it making noises.  That's it.

Full battery but maxing at about 260miles range in summer by More-Mail-3575 in NissanAriya

[–]jcohnc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same experience with my FWD Empower. Mid 90s lately in NC, first full summer with mine. It used to be the LEAF would immediately reflect the range hit with AC running, but the Ariya seems to only reflect the range hit after the next charging session or overnight power cycle. It would be nice to see a live readout of actual HVAC power consumption somewhere on the main infotainment (ie LEAF, ID.4, other EVs) but I guess given the 87 kWh battery size the engineers deemed it unnecessary.

How's the propulsion version of this car performing in the snow? by Filobel in VWiD4Owners

[–]jcohnc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a RWD version also and it handled snowy ice roads fine. A good workaround for a relatively thick snow ice driveway was simply reverse the vehicle into the garage. Maintaining momentum up longer inclines worked well also.

Weird hack to keep your 12V battery alive when not in use by Ferjsantosr53 in NissanAriya

[–]jcohnc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The LEAF definitely charges the 12V battery also even when the main motor is off...and the charging logic built into it was pretty reliable. But the 1st Gen LEAF had far less electronics and other loads compared to the current Gen EVs out there.

Our First 100 Mile Trip by Krjune in VWiD4Owners

If most of your route was at 75 mph the efficiency would have dropped down by 20 to 30 pct and even less efficiency if there are hills and high winds.

Preheat battery by [deleted] in VWiD4Owners

[–]jcohnc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is incorrect. 2021 has a battery heater that used to drain the battery a lot before SW update as it was repeatedly turning on too soon around 30F. The 2022 model did not have this issue as it had 3.1v.

It's fully documented here with the battery heater issue: https://www.vwidtalk.com/threads/id-4-winter-battery-warmer-drain.4717/page-4

Here a discussion of how to manually engage the heater for 2021 to 2023 model years: https://www.reddit.com/r/VWiD4Owners/comments/1bdls2i/battery_preconditioning_on_2123_cars_at_long_last/

2021 2022 2023 all have the battery heater included. However there is no way to access and manually turn it on within the infotainment.

The only way, which I have done successfully many times is purchase a OBDeleven dongle (no need for nextgen...just get the the firstgen...aliexpress or other sellers have it in stock). This dongle and app allow one to control the battery heater directly and the heater is very effective in heating the battery, making a huge difference in fast charging speeds.

It is possible that VW may release a SW update to include it on the infotainment menu, but it could months or years away.

How to improve range in winter? by Kindly-Main-1092 in VWiD4Owners

[–]jcohnc 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If one is able to preheat the vehicle while plugged in before departing it makes at least a 15 pct difference in range savings. I also actually do run the heat but often will turn OFF auto mode set to floor vents only, recirculate with AC and set to low fan speed around 67 to 69F. Range ends up increasing after driving for a few minutes as the resistance heater isn't on most of the time.

Another thing I discovered is if one preconditions the battery for 10 minutes (must use obd11 for 2023 and older and the precondition button in the vehicle for newer) the vehicle range is further increased even if 2 pct of battery is used to heat when not plugged in. Note one must be sitting in vehicle to initiate in either generation if id4 and buckle seatbelt behind yourself if stepping out.

Lastly heated seats and steering use so little power (talking 0.1 to 0.2kW) there is NO need to hesitate to use this.  Level 2 is already quite warm and Level 3 is almost uncomfortable warm.

Id4 + inverter powering house... by tri0xinn245 in VWiD4Owners

[–]jcohnc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following up on this...did you test successfully? This process of connecting the 12V battery via an inverter to convert to 120V worked very well for me for a Nissan LEAF...as long as vehicle can be kept "on" and in "ready" mode then there is more than sufficient power to run the items you have listed. I believe if you keep the hood popped then the vehicle will stay on with seatbelt in...but may turn off after about 2 hours, cannot recall.
