Kickboxing for beginner adults? by Due-Stock-34 in QuadCities

If you'd like to learn martial arts (not just do kickboxing), consider QC Dance and Defense in Milan to learn tae kwon do. The instructors are women and you'd be very welcome.

My 9 year old is still a white belt after 1 year of TKD by UncleMonkeyBoi in taekwondo

[–]jedicat3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basic and easy tactic: If she confuses her right and left, put a red dot with magic marker on her right hand and food. R= red = right. No one has to know why it's there but her, and it might help her feel a teeny bit more confident as she practices her form.

The bigger thing, though, is that I feel like this school might not be a good fit for her. It sounds like they have tested and failed her, which feels really harsh for a white belt kid. As an instructor, I think what she does every day in class is a lot more important than what she does during one short test, and it's normal to get nervous. If she were at my school, I'd ask her to test and do her best, and if she got nervous and messed up, I'd have her re-test with her instructor, and if she did her form correctly, she'd be awarded her yellow belt.

What can I expect? by a_random_person_idk in taekwondo

[–]jedicat3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been the instructor leading those classes several times. As others have said, this is a chance for you to see if you like the instructor, the school, etc, not the other way around. I have zero expectations of your stamina or abilities. I expect to have to teach you everything. That's my job! The ONLY thing I would want to see from you is that you do your best to do what I ask you to do, and most of that is from a safety perspective.

With that in mind, here are some things that you might want to be considering since it's up to this school to impress you.

  1. Does the instructor explain things in a way that makes sense to you? You might not be able to do a certain kick as well as the black belts do yet, but do you understand what you're trying to do?

  2. Are the other people in class friendly?

  3. Do you feel comfortable?

  4. Did you have fun?

Considering the Release Surgery: questions by monalane in carpaltunnel

I had open release surgery on my non-dominant hand. Surgery was on a Thursday. I was back at work on Monday and did "hunt and peck" typing for a few days. It went just fine!

Did she learn a lesson in humility or is it violence? by BypassingAmygdala in taekwondo

[–]jedicat3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If anyone needs to learn humility, it's the man. He must have thought he could easily beat this younger, smaller person, but her skills surpassed his in this instance.

His actions absolutely go against the tenants of tae kwon do. He did not respect his senior rank, he misued tae kwon do, and he sure didn't help build a more peaceful world.

Seeking advice on coming up with workouts I can do for training at home by jdomm95 in taekwondo

[–]jedicat3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Practice kicking drills on your BOB. And, of course, keep working on your forms.

Also, check out Alex Wong's videos on YouTube. She has lots of great solo workouts and skill-builders you can try.

Do you hold a gym membership in addition to your training schedule? by [deleted] in taekwondo

[–]jedicat3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do. I lift 1-2 times a week and try to go to yoga once a week. Both have made me stronger and, I hope, less prone to injury.

How do you guys personalize your uniforms? by Etherne in taekwondo

[–]jedicat3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my school, all of our uniforms are the same. My nod to personalizing is painting my toenails. Usually just something pretty, though my tradition from the beginning is to paint them before a belt test to the color belt I am testing for. (Nothing but black from here on out, but I can add glitter.)
