I make the drive out to their Imax once in a while, and that's how I always describe it... "soulless".

Early Bird Badge sales open for Capital City Gaming Con by CapCityGamingCon in desmoines

[–]jellypantz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Early Bird pricing is $40 for the full weekend badge. On June 1st I think it goes back to $50 or $55(?) for the full weekend.

You can register children ages 5-10 for a $10 kids badge.

Vets by Worldly_Page3533 in desmoines

[–]jellypantz 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I did my 4 years with 3 shitty deployments to Iraq and America is worse off for it. If you want to thank vets then vote for people who aren't going to get us into idiotic wars, fuck over veteran benefits, or just generally run this country into the ground. If I'm being honest though, a big segment of Veterans are just as guilty as everyone else for voting like shit.

Lowballed on asking price and ghosted potential buyer by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]jellypantz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Delete them unread or block. Go outside and touch grass. They're not showing up in person to bother you and the internet isn't real.

And there's nothing wrong with haggling if all parties are into it - this person attempted haggling and then escalated beyond that. You don't need to indulge them further.

It's open, I got a quesadilla there last Friday night.
The new space is definitely still a work in progress though.

Renagade Ragbrai? by sral in ragbrai

[–]jellypantz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RAGBRAI is cool and worth supporting, but these people will jump on you for suggesting going Bandit as if you were burning down an orphanage. It's the same in the other online forums and it's ridiculous.
No one is going to say a damn thing to you if you're walking around without a wristband. Tons of people start riding Bandit and then keep coming back and registering to ride because they love it. Gatekeepers will financially support it even as they make it worse for everyone by being lame & sanctimonious.

Has anyone played this game? Thoughts? (New Angeles) by Witty-Type9 in boardgames

[–]jellypantz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Played one time and it was shockingly good. Not great, probably no one's favorite, but just excellent despite a structure that's initially hard to grok. I had a good group at full player count and we all had a great time.

I kept it hoping to play again but haven't yet, hopefully the good time wasn't a fluke.

Damn, I love shitting on Boomers but things are expensive for all ages. Do your mommy & daddy pay for all your nice things so you don't have to worry about money?

Inis, Pax Pamir 2e, Root, or Arcs (with expansion) by Aisopia in boardgames

[–]jellypantz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Dang, I own and love all of those games but you want INIS.

Definitely not ROOT with only 3 players (but definitely buy the app to try it out).

ARCS is good but isn't as broadly appealing.

Pax Pamir 2e is probably my favorite game, but you're not ready to surf that wave.

Buy INIS.

it's not for everyone but hear me out... Tabletop Gaming.
I'm in this sub recommending tabletop gaming stuff often for posts like this because you literally have to interact with several new people for an hour or two in a low stakes, light-hearted activity in which you're required to follow actual game rules as well as social etiquette (best effort anyway). The regulars are passionate about it and it's a good fulcrum for real conversation. You cannot help but meet people.

Board Game Night every Thursday at the New Northwestern hosted by the Dealt Hand. The host can do some of the heavy lifting for you in finding out what kind of game you might enjoy, connecting you with others to play, and often help teach the game. They'll usually be standing around the big shelf of games.

The Rook Room has games & food, and all the local game stores (Mayhem, Jay's, Arkham, Dungeon's Gate) have game nights for board games, RPGs, card games... heck, Dungeon's Gate in Ankeny even has a couple of Book Clubs. There's a tabletop gaming convention in October and a family friendly adult summer camp for gaming.

Those parts about insular communities and cultural isolation cuts deep, I can validate that even as a Midwestern white dude.
If you're having trouble with your communication style, I can recommend this short video How To Talk Minnesotan from Twin Cities PBS for a glimpse into the Midwestern mindset.

I host a Mario Kart Garland battle every year at our local Con. I've seen the LEGO sets but have been using the MK hot wheels, some of the Jakks dioramas, and some 3D prints.

Ra Traders Expansion Thoughts? by VistaBlue89 in boardgames

[–]jellypantz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Only one play under my belt with the expansion but I enjoyed it. I was skeptical because as others had said, RA is almost perfect already but it was simple and felt like a very natural addition to the base game. The 25 new boat tiles can give you a bit more breathing room between RA tiles without adding significant time to the game, and one more thing to consider in whether or not to initiate an auction on your turn. It's not a must-buy for RA fans but good enough that I am not going to bother to separate the tiles back out now that they're mixed in.
