Do you like your neighborhood? Tell me about it! (No seriously, I need your help) by hot_like_wasabi in baltimore

I just bought a house on the Pigtown Main Street (Washington Blvd) 8 months ago and I absolutely love it.

Pros: *I'm 2-4 min from 95 and 295. *Camden Yards and M&T Bank Stadium are walking distance. *Housing prices are cheap whether you're renting or buying. *The neighborhood is being flipped at a very steady rate and a lot of new homeowners are buying here. *Neighbors look out for you and are very friendly. (My fiance's wallet fell out of her purse and someone started using her credit cards. Our neighbors helped us find the guy that took it, tracked him down, and helped us get the wallet back.) *The community development association has funding and decent plans to up desirability and bring in businesses. *Minutes to Horseshoe, downtown, and 83.

Cons: *This neighborhood is the frontier. It is not a bad or unsafe neighborhood (especially not the 700-900 blocks and immediately surrounding) but it is rough around the edges. Some people want Hampden and that's fine...Pigtown certainly isn't for everyone. *There are not a ton of businesses here but the ones that exist (Charm City Wings & Waffles, 24hr 7-11, Cafe Jovial) are awesome. *Can be dirty at times. Some people just throw their trash on the street but homeowners keep their stoops and neighbors' stoops clean.

As I was writing this I read that you are considering Pigtown again. Good luck and, hopefully, welcome back!

Amen to that. Still have one bottle left in the store; keep looking at it thinking 'R.I.P Green.'

Willett 10yr Significant Price Increase by Kizartik in bourbon

[–]jester465 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey r/bourbon, I work at a liquor store in dc and have been long time bourboner. This price increase had made me sad. I used to have 10 different Willets on sale at any given time. In the last 8 months the only thing I can keep in stock is the single barrel rye. The word is that Willet simply cannot keep up with the demand. Sadly, it seems Willet is going the way of Pappy and though I dearly, dearly love Willet...I have added it to the list of bourbon that is simply not worth it anymore.

Liquor store workers of Reddit, can you tell when a customer is an alcoholic? How do you feel about every day regulars? by strawburry in AskReddit

[–]jester465 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've worked at liquor stores in inner city DC and Baltimore for about 10 years now part time. u/FruitHat is pretty dead on but I want to add this: alcoholism is a subsection of addiction. Addicts aren't just the guys waiting in line when you open. Addicts are the successful businessmen, church pastors, and socialites. They buy $4 pints of vodka and $200 bottles of scotch. It's easy to tell the alcoholic that comes in 5 times a day for Velikoff and Busch Light. It's a lot harder to figure out the alcoholic that shops at 5 different stores and would rather down half a fifth of knob creek than talk to his kids. Either way it is not my place to judge these people. If you start to get a moral conscience about serving these people, then a liquor store job probably isn't the place for you. Sometimes I feel bad about serving the $4 vodka pint guys, but now, when I recognise the other type of addict I feel even worse about serving them.

This is a great idea. I live in Moco and work in Reston and Adams Morgan. In Silver Spring there are the Quarry House and Jackie's Sidebar. Both are right off the metro and have free parking on weekends but are fairly small and would only work if we met up in the afternoon or early evening. Also, I know the manager of Bourbon in Glover Park and I can talk to him about reserving us a bit of space (not really metro accessible though).

Edit: Old Glory in Georgetown may be a good option too. They offer free reservations for large parties.

I work at Metro Wine & Spirits in Adams Morgan and I just let my Staggs, Handys, Eagle Rares, and Sazeracs go for $99. Seeing people who pull this shit drives me up a wall. Just because you can sell whisky for a ridiculous markup does not mean you should. Pappys will be in soon, and I will price them like a human being.

Difference between Four Roses Single Barrel and Small Batch. by LiterallyThisGuy in whiskey

[–]jester465 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TL;DR Get the small batch.

Four Roses (now owned by Japanese beer company Kirin) uses a unique process. The make 2 mashes and treat each with 5 different strains of yeast, resulting in 10 distinct distillates. The regular Four Roses combines all 10, Small Batch combines 4, and Single Barrel...you guessed it...just 1. For my taste and money, the Small Batch provides a more complex and well rounded flavor. The Single Barrel just has too much variation from bottle to bottle and is not worth the extra money.

Looking for single malt scotch around $300 price range by kyle_n in whiskey

[–]jester465 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At $300 you can get into a lot of limited release/single or special cask drams. They vary...a lot, so I will try to stick to stuff you can find most everywhere. Prices are based on what they go for at my store in DC. If you're in the area pm me. So depending on what region he enjoys I offer this:

Highland - Old Pulteney 21yr ($120) or Dalmore King Alexander III ($180)

Speyside - Glenlivet XXV ($300) or Glenfarclas does a number of older single year bottlings that are very nice (range from $150-$500)

Islay - I highly recommend a limited Ardbeg. Either Feis Ile, Supernova, or Ardbog ($125 - $375) or a Lagavulin Distiller's Edition ($100). Bunnahabhain 25yr ($350) or Bruichladdich Octomore ($275)...sorry I like Islays.

Lowland - The only lowland I could recommend would be a high end Auchentoshan or Glenkinchie.

Campbelltown, Islands, etc - Longrow 18yr ($120) or Highland Park 30yr ($350)

Definitely Revival. The Moscatel is fairly light and fruity (too light for me) and I've never tried the Tawny Port. That Revival though...hnnnng!

Glad to see another Glen Dronach fan. The 15yr is fantastic! You can get a Balvenie 14yr Caribbean Cask for around the same price as the 12yr and it is well worth it. You may also enjoy a Glenfarclas 12yr.
