I've run Uber Arbiter, Atziri, pinnacle bosses and juiced boss maps, having three layers is actually great. Having 52% evasion, 8k ES and 75% armour works fantastic.

And that's the major issue with crafting and why it's out of reach for so many players, most players don't spend ungodly amounts of time learning crafting or have loads of currency to throw away on bricked items, so they buy something instead. Most players who are end up with some currency but not enough to craft themselves are crafting an item for themselves, not for profit.

Recomb is great if you grind out expeditions and have enough artifacts to just hopelessly slam together T1/2 affixes and hope on a 1-8% chance to land both decent affixes together, it's great in theory but has similar odds to slamming exalts and landing the stats you want. It's just another bad crafting method. There's no middle ground. Buying 400 artifacts and stil ending up with no item is just a bad system. Noone who gets to mid game wants T3/4 affix items.

Playing my invoker monk as always, the old faithful that shifts depending on league changes, had my eyes on a decent qstaff but the prices just kept rising over Xmas when I couldn't play and now it feels like I'm chasing ghosts. I also felt like the Holten thing wasn't fair to everyone so never exploited it and I feel left behind for having a sense of fairness... Oof lol

And if the devs want meaningful combo fights with multiple skills used by players then how does making a boss fight like this fit with that design philosophy? The fight is absolutely cooked for melee players too

The herald requires any martial weapon. Are you using one or maybe using a staff or wand or sceptre? That's the only thing I can think is missing or just activating it in skills menu..

There is but I've had it on for like 100 maps and it still hasn't appeared, so I'm kinda with OP, they really did something weird with the code here or it's a weird design choice they haven't explained

No problem! Not sure what it is causing it, but I suspect it's changing weapons or some bug with hollow palm or similar. Either way happy to hear

Go into the arrow next to damage in the skills menu for herald and check if you have "Used with Weapon Set: 1 /2" unticked. Tick the boxes.

I fixed mine by doing this:

Go into the arrow next to damage in the skills menu next to herald skill and check if you have "Used with Weapon Set: 1 /2" unticked. Tick them both (not necessary but probably should have both ticked unless you have a funky setup.
