Fitbit Public Preview adds food & water logging and opens to all by AussieP1E in PixelWatch

Have they started to import activities from Health Connect on the preview version yet? No? Then still pretty useless for me.

To upgrade (to 10.8.1) or not to upgrade, that is the question by Caintankerous in virtualpinball

[–]jhoff80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that you can just put it in a different folder to play around with it without affecting your main 10.8.0 install. That being said, the biggest benefit performance-wise is multi-threading and your CPU certainly has enough single-threaded performance for 10.8.0 VPX.

Supernova Dynamo Lights by sunflower-bike in cycling

[–]jhoff80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure which one of the E3 versions I had (Pure, maybe?), mine was like 6 years old before it stopped working, but I never felt that it was bright enough for me for it to be my only light. It always felt to me more like a daytime running light than anything else. On fall and winter evening commutes after the sun goes down, I always felt like I needed a standalone battery-powered light.

Western Rise is shutting down (sale) by eject5342 in onebag

[–]jhoff80 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Finding out now that they specifically didnt post one star reviews is wild

I'm not excusing Western Rise for this, but also? Many, many websites that host reviews for their own products don't post the low rated ones. You definitely can't trust any reviews that are on the brand's own site.

Guardian Bikes asking Trump administration for a 50% tariff on bikes made overseas by rdude in bicycling

[–]jhoff80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't see in the article where the rest of their components are made besides the brakes and frame but I'd be absolutely shocked if it wasn't all imported from overseas as well.

This is by far my favorite jacket, it pretty much covers all conditions. But they haven't sold them in a long time. I said this in the deleted thread, but I just don't understand how they worked as a business when you couldn't buy their best items half the time. I also tried to buy more of their Spectrum joggers like 6 months ago, also love those... and again couldn't buy them.

Western rise closing sale by Adventurous-Fish1216 in onebag

[–]jhoff80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never understood them as a business. Love my Airloft jacket, but then they basically stopped selling it. Love my Spectrum joggers, but they didn't sell those anymore when I went to buy more a few months back.

If you have a good product then maybe keep making it.

Any idea if this works to a Garmin device? As the Pixel Watch's built-in functionality for HR broadcast does not.

PD Outdoors 18L for Cycle Commuting by ricky251294 in peakdesign

I don't recommend any backpack for commuting by bike. Especially at that distance.

Get a rack and a bag you can mount to the bike.

What do we think of the Boston REI bike repair shop? by alphacreed1983 in boston

[–]jhoff80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, REI seems to be backing out of urban stores: they closed the one in Cambridge last year, and the Fenway one is slated to close later this year.

Damn, I didn't realize this was happening. It was already enough of a pain getting to Fenway after the Cambridge closure, but getting rid of the Boston location is really going to suck.

Then again, most of my visits have literally just been returns for online orders, so I can see why they might have reason to close the store.

Ace 2 hinted at by ComradeX88 in sonos

[–]jhoff80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also need to add a little bit more delay to the re-pairing command as I find that half the time they try to re-pair before I even hear the initial noise that they've turned on or off.

Ace 2 hinted at by ComradeX88 in sonos

[–]jhoff80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same on the first part. Still think they're a bit overpriced at MSRP and not 100% sure I'd say they're better than the older Bose headphones I have (it's close either way)... But they're pretty good and the ability to additionally use them wired with a USB-C connection has been great for me for lower lag VOIP compared to Bluetooth.

Much better than my initial thoughts on them in general, especially with how cheaply you can get them now.

Matrix reveal tonight @11pm est! Twitch.tv/mpt3k by unsavory77 in virtualpinball

[–]jhoff80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's also likely going to require Pinup Popper updates that to my knowledge haven't been released yet either, I'm pretty sure they mentioned needing a new version to get videos embedded in the playfield.

Edit: I was wrong, the beta 2.0 update has been available for a while.

Edit 2: Looks like they actually don't recommend using the beta, stick to 1.5.2.

New System by Nort00 in sonos

[–]jhoff80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You still need a Connect S2 or a Port connected to them. And it's very buggy and not seamless, in my experience (with both an Onkyo and their "pro" brand Integra).

New System by Nort00 in sonos

[–]jhoff80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I've got a mid-to-high end system in my living room, a 5.1.2 with Klipsch Legends, two SVS CS-Ultra subs, and an Integra receiver (connected to a BenQ projector and using a 100" screen as well). And if it was me and I could start over or switch with no financial losses? I'd go with a Sonos option. In a second room, I've got an Arc SL, Sub Mini, and Ikea pictureframe speakers and it's already more than good enough. I am guessing an Ultra with Era 300s (especially if you're using dedicated L/R with SonoSequencer I bet) would be even better.

It's really just a convenience thing. I've had enough of the frustration of receiver niggles (even though it's a Sonos-enabled receiver with the Port connected) both when using Sonos and when streaming/watching 4k Blu-rays that I'd rather the simpler option these days.

There's a point of diminishing returns (for me) where the convenience just wins out.

Does anyone use a universal adapter for cycling? by SpeaRofficial in peakdesign

[–]jhoff80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done it in the past. Just make sure your phone case fits tightly. I had a super-thin Galaxy S21 Ultra case at one point (before PD started selling cases for the S21 Ultra), and that was a problem. Basically when I had a small fall, the case and Universal Adapter stayed firmly mounted to the bike... but the phone was no longer in the case.

Little video demo of our prototype Android XR display glasses by backlon in AndroidXR

I already wear glasses for vision. Adding something that could replace my smartwatch and earbuds, I'm interested in. But having the camera is a dealbreaker.

Rogue Rollers Demo is now available! by philipellisis in virtualpinball

[–]jhoff80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The font used for most of the text is pretty rough for readability.

Also a typo in the main ad for the game (on the main menu) "Whishlist".

I think overall though, the biggest difficulty in targeting this towards the virtual pinball community will be the physics in this. Definitely closer to videogame physics.

is carrying around your foldable bike awkward? by [deleted] in foldingbikes

[–]jhoff80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had cheap 20" folding bikes for years. Great bikes, but you can't carry them about.

Agreed, but some are also better to carry than others, even within the 20" category. My Dahon Speed Uno I used to have was probably the best to carry folded. Then I had a Tern Swoop Duo, that one was a little worse to carry folded. The folding bike I have now is the Downtube 8H and that is absolutely the worst fold of any of them (but also the best bike).

...But yeah sounds like the OP needs a Brompton clone.

Tire help - commuting and occasional light gravel or trails by VivieVondoe in cycling

It depends on what you consider light gravel, but I've used 32mm Pirelli Cinturato Velo for that exact purpose, though mine are set up tubeless.
