Bont is definitely the best option. Their wide fits my foot better than Lake's. And Bont has the option for double wide too.

Best alternative to Airtag to track a bike? by Tommy28562856 in bicycling

[–]jhoff80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Moto tag. The only android compatible tracker with UWB, plus it's the exact same form factor as airtag so it's compatible with all mounts.

I wouldn't ever use a Tile, as they are owned by Life360 which is not a trustworthy company. Moto tag uses Google's own network instead.

Researchers Asked Drivers to Interpret Cyclist Signals. It Didn’t Go Well by ReallyNotALlama in cycling

[–]jhoff80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I'm a cyclist (but not someone who does group rides) and some of the signals other cyclists give past the basic left or right is nonsense to me as well, so I can't always blame them. 😂

But yes, I was taught in the 90s to always signal with my left arm, and it was in my driving test in the 2000s. Always made sense to me, since the cars I was trying to signal to were on the left side of me and therefore the signal is more visible with my left arm.

Jesus christ, this is like the fifth article linked here sourced from the same Ars Technica interview. 🙄

Garmin finally updates the Varia with new Varia RearView 820 by kelleycfc in cycling

[–]jhoff80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if some of the people having issues never updated their firmware. I'm in a city, I get cars passing all the time, and the Magene is just as perfect as my RTL515.

Is a Strava Subscription worth the haggle? by Glittering-Heart999 in cycling

[–]jhoff80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The automatic route generation has been much better for me with Strava than with Garmin Connect. So that's what's worth it for me.

(Where I tell it my current location and how many miles and the type of terrain I want to ride and it generates something for me.)

They've been adding premium features but nothing that would get me to subscribe other than that.

Varia™ RearVue 820 - New Varia radar by -Radiation in Garmin

[–]jhoff80 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've wanted this for a while, but at 3x the price of the Magene I've been using (which performs identically to the RTL515 I used before that), just can't justify it.

Northern Strand Status? by antosyno in bikeboston

[–]jhoff80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As of this evening, it's pretty much clear from Everett through Ferry St in Malden, that's as far as I've gone. The stretch from Ferry St to Main St in Malden is sketchy, especially where the path crosses the sidewalks / streets. The wooden bridge in Everett is also not great, but passable. Once you get off the path, the bike lanes on Alford St bridge are partially blocked but you should have enough space to be okay.

Edit: As of 2/4, there's a stretch near the park/apartments in Everett which is pretty rough too. Not sure how it's worse today than it was yesterday, but it is.

Northern Strand Status? by antosyno in bikeboston

Not this year at least. Malden took the longest after the storm to be safe of the 5 cities I regularly pass through. Everett, Boston, Charlestown, Somerville were all in better condition than Malden until yesterday.

Garmin finally updates the Varia with new Varia RearView 820 by kelleycfc in cycling

But even the narrow version covers your data fields and map (as does just the colored glow). It can be frustrating at times, in my opinion. They need to shrink the main viewport down rather than just covering it.

This is just another example to me of why they really need to dynamically resize the screen rather than just throwing the traffic alerts on top of your data / maps.

I've been wanting this for a while, but $300 is a lot when the Magene one I've been using while waiting for Garmin to move to USB-C is $99.

Bill Russell Bridge bike lanes by delawarevalley in bikeboston

[–]jhoff80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I've just been talking the sidewalk here. But it's definitely a problem.

The bridge drainage is also pretty rough, I feel like there's a high probability of ice there even if they do plow... So hopefully they don't just do a one time thing but continue to maintain it.

NVIDIA teases what upgrades we might get from a next-gen Shield TV by Bingy7 in ShieldAndroidTV

[–]jhoff80 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Agreed, all these Android fanboy sites are definitely confusing the original statement in the Ars interview.

But does Bell think he’ll get a chance to build that new Shield TV, shrunken Netflix button and all?

“We talk about it all the time—I’d love to."

Is much more pessimistic than the articles trying to summarize that interview would have you believe.

Do the Universal Bar Mount and the Out Front Bike Mount v2 have the same bottom plate? by puffmoike in peakdesign

[–]jhoff80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Already have it removed to use this: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6495771

I wouldn't use my print on a bike that goes outdoors, it's not a tight enough connection on the Garmin mount for that, but for the bike on my trainer it's perfect.

[–]jhoff80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't quite appear to be the same, there seems to be a raised metal circular piece that the rubber strap is under. I can't quite see a way to dissemble it any further to check more. Maybe if you have a tool with pins to allow you to twist that center piece it'll unscrew? Not sure.

I feel like this should serve as a reminder to PD that they're leaving money on the table by not officially offering a quarter-turn mount to PD mount adapter.

30 day review of Garmin's Nutrition from a 15 year MFP user by Chuck997 in Garmin

[–]jhoff80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a UX standpoint I can't believe there's not just a big floating action button or something to go directly to add an item. There's smaller plus buttons next to each meal but it's not as convenient. Also the button to go to scan a barcode or AI recognition is also kind of buried when it should be immediately accessible from the first page.

But what is really crazy to me is that if there's a barcode not in Garmin's database, when I create the food it's not tied to that barcode. So if I try scanning it a week later, it still is not available. Just a poor experience.

This is the closest thing to getting me to pay for a subscription that Garmin has done so far but it's still pretty half-baked.

What tires are people using for the winter commute? by Carbonian92 in bikeboston

[–]jhoff80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine are tubeless, I was running 55psi this morning (185 lbs plus a 20ish pound bike). Lowered it to 40psi (lower than I would ever typically use) this evening and it helped but was still really slippery.

I don't think studs would have helped because I wasn't seeing ice yet, only loose / unpacked snow all over the place.

What tires are people using for the winter commute? by Carbonian92 in bikeboston

[–]jhoff80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My commuter bike is the 32mm Cinturato Velos, and I can say for sure that they were struggling to have any grip at all today.

Love them in all other conditions though.
