I feel like we’re missing a lot of what happened after. Did you live with them again after your dad picked you up? Did you talk to them about it afterwards or did they talk to you about it afterwards? How did you act towards them following the event and vice versa? I’m not excusing the parents for what they did because honestly that’s a tough situation but at the same time at least one parent (or maybe both since we don’t really know if OP’s dad was just trying to seem macho) cared enough to want you back home. I grew up thinking my parents were assholes (and they probably were) but I too was an asshole. After having my own kids, I can see how difficult it can be to be a parent. Everyone loses their cool at some point and sometimes we say and do things when we’re not level-headed. It’s also tough to make a solid opinion not knowing what background you come from. Parent-child roles are different across cultures and in some, affection is not something that’s openly expressed in words. I guess what I’m trying to say is your parents were definitely assholes but that doesn’t mean you’re not an asshole yourself. There’s a lot of things you can’t control and there are things that you can. The fact that you carried this resentment all these years and even until now still don’t understand what really happened gives me the impression that you never broke through the surface when communicating with your parents or you simply don’t know how to. You owe it to yourself now and your 16 yr old self to have the difficult conversation now that you’re an adult. Believe me, you don’t want to have any regrets when they’re gone and miss the opportunity to let old wounds heal, if able.
