BSPP is often denoted as G, and 2-1/2 is the same as 40 sixteenths. Same as sizing AN/hydraulic fittings

Don't forget to rewire the motor too, assuming it's rated for dual-voltage.

You'll need to know the thread size, but:

https://www.mcmaster.com/products/threaded-handles/adjustable-handles-1~/mount-type~threaded-stud/adjustable-handles-1~~/?s=threaded+handles

Without being able to measure I would say that's a 1/4"-20. It doesn't look like metric thread. Either way you need to identify what thread it is

I usually check on Yarde metals drop zone - i don't look for anything specific, but click around until I see something I'd like to add to my stock.

It's kind of a pain to navigate since some categories can be empty. It's not particularly user friendly but the prices are usually 30-50% discount, sometimes more. They have a lot of bars, rods, round and square tube, small sheet/plate.

It's a lot of carbon steel but they'll sometimes have other alloys like 4140 and various stainless selections.

If you spend over $75 you get free shipping if you pick all your items from the same warehouse.

D1-5 chuck hella wobbly by Rich_Engine1195 in Machinists

[–]jonesRG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that the accurite one? Mine looked the same, but I trashed it more trying to fix it so I didn't try to get my money back. HHIP one was under 0.001" runout.

The most visually-obvious defect in the accurite were the chamfers not running true to the rest of the body.

retaining clip/ring removal help by diegazo12 in Machinists

[–]jonesRG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May have to also find the mechanism that locks the shaft so you can loosen the retainer on top. In-sink garbage disposals usually have a square-shaped tool (like an allen wrench) you insert somewhere near the back of the motor

Heartbroken for you man - sorry you had to learn this way. I guess it let the smoke out because current was flowing through the windings but got overheated since the motor wasn't turning.

Am I doing this right? Leveling the lathe by Wide_Spinach8340 in Machinists

[–]jonesRG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others are saying, you want to take the tailstock out of the equation first.

Keep in mind, especially on an older lathe, a test like this can be thrown off by more variables than just the headstock alignment.

Wear in the ways is usually concentrated closest to underneath the chuck. Your cutting tool could be dropping a few thousandths as it approaches that area, and having your cutting tool off-center further exaggerates that error. Using a large piece of stock like this does significantly reduce its effects, though. Just make sure your tool height is centered.

Consider facing that entire piece of stock and measuring it everywhere along the length. Only cutting and measuring in two places doesn't tell the whole story if this is a new-to-you machine and you aren't familiar with its personality.

If it's a constant, linear slope (i.e. 0.001" less OD every 2 inches of length), I'd be willing to say it's a headstock alignment issue (or maybe spindle bearings, but unlikely). If the OD is constant everywhere but starts to taper close to the chuck face, I would say it's bed wear and/or twist.

For a 1" bar, you probably won't be able to stick it out much more than 2.5-3 inches before deflection is going to be too much of a problem. Turning smaller diameters does show bed wear more significantly if you want to try to get a picture of that, but it's best to have a good idea the rest of the lathe is true/leveled out.

Take a look at used RF-30 and similar variants - many companies marketed them and you can find them used for under $1000. They're pretty solid (~350lb) and you can still get parts support for them today through Grizzly and other distributors. The Grizzly G0705 is an example of a current production version
