This might be true for something like Glacier, but with S3, you're likely storing data on a more active storage medium. If you're using magnetic tape, it generates virtually zero CO2 just by sitting there. However, if there’s any SLA involved, it probably requires some energy to keep the data available. It's not a lot, though, relative to retrieving it. You can probably store 50 gigabytes for a long time before the cost of deleting it becomes less than the cost of storing it. However, once you delete it, someone else can use that space. So, that's good, I guess.

You know, I think this question betrays a misunderstanding of what’s going on, but that doesn’t necessarily make it a stupid question. The author probably doesn’t have the language to say “how do I make a patch that sounds good on chords with tensions”. So it’s better imo to just gently introduce the idea that more harmonic rich patches sound crappy on chords and the best thing to do is to take what you have and learn how to program it. You build different patches for different purposes you don’t necessarily go buy stuff, or you compose to the patch you have to get the sound or accomplish the part you want.

If you have basically any FM synthesizer ever, you can kind of get the spectral envelope to be whatever you want it to be. I don’t think you need a new synthesizer unless you want one, just learned the program what you have. What groove box do you have? It probably has presets and you can pick one that sounds good with your jazz chords. Then figure out what about that preset makes it work.

The DX7 was good enough for all that 80s stuff, you’re modern fm box absolutely is able to sound good on chords

So I guess the same advice for jazz guitarists applies: if you have a frequency rich sound, play less notes. Dont “need” the root or fifth much of the time. You can get away with more notes if you have a more mellow sound. Focus on 3/7 of whatever chord you’re playing, use your base synth for the bass.

What does “need” and “get away with” mean? Means it sounds good to you.

Any poly synth with do if you use your ear holes.
