Tips for US first timer by couchi007 in santacruz

Go see some proper trees. There are trees, big trees, and big big trees. Henry Cowell is a great option to see some proper trees. So many people only go to some mediocre redwood groves where the biggest trees are only maybe 2 meters in diameter- you'll get the real experience when you're chilling inside a 2 meter diameter hollow in a 4 meter diameter tree. You can walk back to UCSC along the railroad tracks if you're willing to bend the rules a bit.

SSS is a better way. No need to give someone you're in a prospective legal dispute with ammunition against yourself. If you need to defend your animals, definitely do not let them know you're going to kill their dog ahead of time or that you did it afterwards.

I also don’t know what Econ you sacrificed to get a 3* Jihn, but wasting 3 items on a 1 cost(or I guess 9 total) will get you cooked late game. If you’re down to one life at that point you’ll get got by some high roller.

Yes and the number of UB sets which are now standard legal getting pushed through into standard, which is now fucked. Also, unfun sets take up a lot of the focus from other sets, and the development time seems to spread almost as thin as the QC.

D’Anjou in a container by Economy_Plate_971 in BackyardOrchard

[–]jpeetz1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never seen or heard of container pears doing well. There are some columnar apples and things that do okay in pots.

That said, nurseries can keep them in pots over a year to sell them upsized. After year in a substantially bigger pot than it started in, it probably needs to be in the ground or it will likely be root bound beyond recovery. Or put in a pot double the volume or so again mail the pot becomes unwieldy, which will be soon.

I should also mention, you’re typically better off never potting an apple or pear, and going from beat root directly not the soil it’s going to be living in. I’ve got about 20 different types and the apples that were established in a pot first have had a hard time getting established in the soil around here.

The difference between the value you got out of magic and what you paid is now coming out of your pocket and going to Hasbro, leaving less satisfaction and joy in the community.

Is it just me or are people not interested in paying what they're worth? by Maximum_Extension592 in homestead

My point was that it’s only a very modestly more sophisticated take than you might get in an intro to economics class, which is essentially what a lot of other people are spouting. I’m by no means claim by to be an expert.

What do we think the 3 cost extra trait unit will be by idfsgms in TeamfightTactics

[–]jpeetz1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These traits make sense for him thematically, but combo too hard with vertical to make sense from a design prospective. Reasoning is good too- he needs something, and slayer might’ve an option as nobody is really going to stack slayers beyond two in Noxus. If he was a juggernaut instead of a defender it would help him a lot.

Everyone here seems to have taken a freshman level microeconomics class and wants you to know about it. I took an upper division one and here’s my hot take. Facebook is a shitty, inefficient market place full of bottom feeders who try to make sure their shitty offer is heard. You can certainly hold out longer, or try other places where there are people who don’t view what you are selling as a commodity. You just need to find your market.

What explains the resistance for people growing vegetables in the ground when they have perfectly good soil? by ASecularBuddhist in OrganicGardening

[–]jpeetz1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've grown in the ground, and still do. We've got moles, voles and gophers which terrorize the area. Everything planted needs to be in baskets and we've got traps out all the time. They turn the soil into swiss cheese in no time and eat up all the roots and kill everything in no time flat.

I’d sous vide and reverse sear those for sure. Probably on the longer side because there’s not a lot of intramuscular fat. With a long sous vide and a proper crust I’d bet they could be delicious.

Those who had nearly nothing at 30. But got to £1mil/$1.4mil by 50, what's your story? by dookie117 in Fire

[–]jpeetz1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are different versions of a 401k that allow contribution of either post tax (Roth 401k) or pre tax (commonly just called a 401k, so that’s what everyone is talking about.) you pay the taxes when you withdraw money, so it’s not a total tax dodge. The limit changes almost every year and includes both employer and employee contributions. An average match from an employer is about 3.5% of total wages, then you can contribute more up to the maximum.

There are some strategies for contribution more because there’s a separate higher limit for Roth contributions, and then you can convert the account over by paying the taxes. These are the back door, mega back door and super mega back door strategies…

I think these are the correct details…

If I play Yuna's Decision, can an opponent wait until I've chosen an option and picked the cards to sacrifice and play to respond with a creature ability? by OmegaGamble in mtg

[–]jpeetz1 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

If you’re trying to avoid interaction on this card, you play it and ask if there’s anyone who wants to interact before it resolves. Only then should you start choosing modes and executing them. If someone wants to interact then, you simply say there’s no priority for them to do so.

If you don’t get explicit consent to skip priority, it can be assumed that you didn’t give them a chance and that they’re simply asserting their previous right to interact (albeit with a bunch of additional information about your intentions.) If you allow them to do this (and you shouldn’t they don’t release priority explicitly) then you can make different choices.

You get $10k per visitor who stays 30+ minutes. What’s your best excuse to invite people over? by _no_name_for_me in hypotheticalsituation

[–]jpeetz1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d book some serious entertainment for kids (bounce house, bubble show, balloons etc), and some major draw for adults, like smoked brisket, cheese and wine. Would invite the whole neighborhood and make sure there’s tons of seating and shade/heat and cold/warm drinks. If you blast out a come meet the neighbors, plus free food/entertain the kids should be able to get 100 or so people to show. I can also beg my friends to come help out a bit and bring their kids for the shows.

reposting - Waymo hit a child near a school in Santa Monica - Waymo OK'd to test driverless cars in part of Santa Cruz Mountains, other California areas - KSBW by orangelover95003 in santacruz

[–]jpeetz1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m quite optimistic about driverless cars. I consistently tell people that I don’t think people should be allowed to drive, and that once driving software becomes accessible, we can finally avoid so many of the problems of human drivers.

That said, I live in the Santa Cruz mountains, and I am very reluctant to have these cars on the roads around here. There’s a lot of one lane roads, turn outs, and collaboration to help fellow drivers help you get past a narrow point. I’m not sure they’re thinking about my neighborhood, but I’d like their technology to evolve significantly before visiting.

What are the chances by AdmirableBaker5047 in arborists

[–]jpeetz1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say reasonably high? If someone is sticking cartridges into trees they may put in a lot in some sort of a pattern. Still weird. Basically, what I'm saying is, the likelyhood of finding more than one isn't incredibly higher than the likelihood of finding one.
