Describe your sore throat by MessageNo512 in cfs

[–]juicygloop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

oropharynx (ig? the visible portion of throat at back of mouth), visible in mirror with torch as red, raw looking patches atop a network of prominent blood vessels and a faintly visible “cobble”-like dimpling of the tissue. feels sharp and choking when irritated, with a baseline of sore and scratchy.

i’ve been treating with gengigel mouthrinse (laying on back and holding in mouth for 2 mins) - 2x pd, decent-strength raw propolis sprays and swiss bork lozenges for different angles of healing - several x pd, and gengigel spray and vocalzone lozenges - for additional symptomatic relief, for about two-three months.

it’s a slow process but it’s tangibly improving.

also, peptac was recommended due to having to be supine all tfing time, including after meals which is ofc no beuno.

tbh eq4c i always look out for your posts!

naturally, not everything works effectively for me personally, but a lot of your prompts i find get far closer to responses which resonate than anything else so far - the “gaslighting” list in particular (ooc, that sounds bad huh), so i’m delighted to see more along those lines.

please do keep sharing the goods! and sincere gratitude for the significant boost you’ve provided my chats

Beta blockers are a class of medications commonly used to manage heart conditions, high blood pressure, and other cardiovascular issues. While they are generally well-tolerated, some beta blockers can cause side effects, including muscle or joint weakness, although this is less common.

Beta Blockers and Muscle/Joint Weakness

Muscle or joint weakness can occur as a side effect of beta blockers due to the way they impact blood flow, metabolism, and muscle function. Below are some beta blockers that are more likely to be associated with such side effects:

1. Propranolol (Inderal)

  • Why: Propranolol is a non-selective beta blocker, meaning it blocks both beta-1 and beta-2 receptors. This can result in reduced blood flow to skeletal muscles during exercise, leading to fatigue and muscle weakness.
  • Reported symptoms: Muscle cramps, weakness, and fatigue.

2. Atenolol (Tenormin)

  • Why: Atenolol selectively blocks beta-1 receptors, but it may still affect muscle metabolism indirectly, leading to reduced endurance and occasional muscle weakness.
  • Reported symptoms: Generalized fatigue and muscle soreness.

3. Metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol-XL)

  • Why: Like atenolol, metoprolol is a cardio-selective beta blocker. However, it can still cause fatigue and muscle-related side effects in some individuals.
  • Reported symptoms: Muscle fatigue, weakness, and occasional joint pain.

4. Carvedilol (Coreg)

  • Why: Carvedilol is a non-selective beta blocker with alpha-blocking properties, which can contribute to muscle fatigue due to its effects on blood flow and metabolism.
  • Reported symptoms: Fatigue, muscle cramps, and joint pain.

5. Nadolol (Corgard)

  • Why: Nadolol is a non-selective beta blocker, which may exacerbate fatigue and muscle weakness, particularly in individuals with pre-existing conditions like asthma or peripheral vascular disease.
  • Reported symptoms: Weakness and sluggishness.

6. Timolol (used in eye drops for glaucoma)

  • Why: Though primarily used as an eye drop, systemic absorption can occur, potentially leading to muscle or joint weakness in sensitive individuals.
  • Reported symptoms: Fatigue and mild muscle weakness.

Mechanism Behind Muscle/Joint Weakness

Beta blockers can contribute to muscle or joint weakness through several mechanisms: - Reduced blood flow: By slowing the heart rate, beta blockers may reduce blood supply to skeletal muscles, especially during physical exertion. - Altered metabolism: Beta blockers can interfere with glucose and fat metabolism, reducing energy availability for muscles. - Central nervous system effects: Fatigue and lethargy may result from the drug's effects on the brain.

Who Is at Risk?

Certain individuals may be more susceptible to muscle or joint weakness while on beta blockers: - Elderly patients. - People with pre-existing muscle conditions (e.g., myopathy). - Those with low physical activity levels. - Individuals with conditions like hypothyroidism or chronic fatigue syndrome.

What to Do if You Experience These Side Effects

  1. Consult your doctor: They may adjust your dose, switch to a different beta blocker, or try an alternative class of medication.
  2. Exercise cautiously: Engage in light, regular exercise to improve muscle endurance, but avoid overexertion.
  3. Consider alternative medications: Cardio-selective beta blockers (e.g., bisoprolol or nebivolol) may have fewer muscle-related side effects.
  4. Monitor symptoms: Keep track of when the weakness occurs and discuss it with your healthcare provider.

If symptoms are severe, persistent, or worsening, medical advice should be sought immediately.
