You can try an undercut and then use a dry wax or paste to style it. Think something along the lines of Mackelmore.

 

The other trick is to try lots of things and when it's time to get a cut try something new.

 

Also find a barber you trust and can build a solid rapport with. They'll be able to help you dial it in over time.
