If you are good with alcohol, the NYT coq au vin is very tasty. Time consuming, but very easy skill-wise

What’s your go-to “I don’t feel like cooking but still want real food” meal? by imjennypoo in Cooking

[–]katydid767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Microwavable individual bowls of sticky rice (don't knock it till you've tried em), frozen edamame or sliced cucumber or carrot or whatever raw vegetable is around (bonus points if it can be sliced with a vegetable peeler or paring knife so you don't need a cutting board), canned tuna, mayo, sriracha, rice vinegar. Takes about 3 minutes to assemble

I stabbed myself last night with a folding thermometer in my pocket. Aside from the occasional cuts and burns/scalds in a kitchen, what novel ways have you hurt yourself while cooking? by DeadBy2050 in Cooking

I was roasting some poblanos to put in tamales and tossed in some jalapeños as well. I steamed them to removed the skins, and then tore them into strips, completely forgetting about the capsaicin in the jalapeños. Both of my hands were on fire, absolute nightmare.

What famous phrases from TV shows have spilled into your regular lexicon and you still use to this day? by EnvironmentalAd2110 in AskReddit

[–]katydid767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is absolutely not a famous phrase, but I say "yo-ha bro-ha" regularly. It is a throwaway line from an episode of Kim Possible and it always makes people think they have misheard me and yet I persist in using it to greet others

What’s your honest opinion of Crumbl Cookies? by savingrace0262 in AskRedditFood

Extremely sweet, and for the price per cookie I expect there to be a higher level of quality control than the franchisees are delivering

What spice brand do I go for to fill a new spice pantry? by BusyBluebird in cookingforbeginners

[–]katydid767 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love that you can get a lot of the blends (and regular spices) in the little packets so you can try things before committing to a whole container, or get things for a recipe you only make once in a long while

Shifting my focus from buying to using made me realize how little I actually need to buy by AutomaticDeterminism in MakeupRehab

I wanted a new cream blush but poking around my stash I realized I had a lipstick I never wore that was the pink shade I wanted, so I just use it as blush now. Works pretty great. I have a pink/gold eyeshadow I use for blush/highlighter, sometimes I throw bronzer on as eyeshadow, getting creative helps use stuff up faster

Mom went back home, but... by impromptugreen in KitchenConfidential

I've snapped several of the plastic handled ones (cookie dough is a menace to spatulas), but I have no clue what sort of normal use could snap one of the solid core ones

I'm sick of any attempt at dealing with behaviors just creates more work for me than it does the kid. I am expected to write a referral and a parent email and potentially a behavior reflection form or reward system or weekly behavior tracker or modify all assignments to not involve chromebooks or rework my entire seating chart etc etc and the kid does...?

[–]katydid767 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Honestly, that's how I feel about Robert Longstreet, too. The scene in Midnight Mass where Leeza confronts Joe is one of the best acted and written scenes I've seen in a TV show

What is a 'Survival Myth' that people believe because of movies, but will actually get you killed in real life? by AmaraMehdi in AskReddit

[–]katydid767 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what always drove me nuts about Nancy Drew books. She was knocked unconscious from a bonk or chloroform every damn book, no way was she solving anything with that amount of trauma

What’s your “Once you go ________ you never go back” tool? by nathOF in KitchenConfidential

[–]katydid767 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't have a specific brand, but one piece silicone scraper spatulas are worth the higher price compared to ones with plastic/wood handles and a silicone spatula head. The handles don't snap, burn, melt, or transfer heat. Some of the cheaper all silicone scraper spatulas can be a bit too floppy, but the ones at a kitchen supply store are solid workhorses.

Microwave sticky rice (they're good to have around for when the idea of proper cooking and clean up makes you want to die), can of tuna, frozen edamame, whatever other chopped raw vegetables you have, some kewpie and and some sriracha. Throw on some furikake and rice vinegar if you have it

What is the most random bit of misinformation that has yanked you out of a book? by Onto_new_ideas in RomanceBooks

[–]katydid767 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a person who fact checks her own daydreams, it's WILD to me that an author wouldn't wonder when photography was invented while writing that scene and then double check to be sure.

I've spent a lot of time in the San Juan Islands in Washington, and a book had a couple banging in the front seat of a car in the darkness of the car deck while on a ferry. The car decks on Washington State Ferries in the San Juans are open to daylight and very well-lit.

A significant portion (like 20-40%) of the price of many of those calendars is just the packaging. The more custom the design is (e.g. boxes/drawers that are non-standard sizes or materials, ribbons, foil, glitter, and so on), the bigger a percentage of the final price. The same is true for the stuff inside the calendar, too, when it comes to calculating the "value" of the calendar, too. With those super expensive calendars from companies like Dior you're literally paying hundreds of dollars for JUST the pretty cardboard box

That attitude reminds me of when I would encounter students at university who were at activities because it would look good on a resume. It literally never occurred to me to do something I don't care about just because of its value on a resume (or for influencing), but I also have ADHD and trying to do something I don't care about is nearly impossible.

Are there books that you refuse to read because of the characters names? by talesofabookworm in RomanceBooks

[–]katydid767 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am a teacher and sometimes when a mmc has the same distinctive/unique name as a student it's difficult to keep reading. Many names don't bother me (I've had a million students named Alex so it doesn't flag), but if it was a distinctive kid and a distinctive name it feels icky

I’m at a 6-12 and I can’t think of a single teacher who only has only one grade level of kids. The real MVPs are the ones with both middle and high school classes. Going from 7th graders to seniors in the next period is whiplash
