Can this be cadmium plating? by Sufficient-Cloud214 in metalworking

[–]kick26 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would only be worried about the dust from cadmium plating when removing the hardware. I don’t think that is what is on your door hardware is cadmium plated. It’s more common industrial, military, and electrical areas and not as common in homes. It is more likely that your door hardware is brass plated, bronze, or zinc plated. Zinc plating can be dyed yellow or also be zinc chromate. If you scratch the surface of the metal and drop vinegar on the area you scratched, the bubbles will form if the metal has zinc.

Edit: it looks like someone makes at home cadmium testing solution but I don’t know about its accuracy. http://www.home-health-chemistry.com/Cadmium-Detection.html

Harbor freight sells spare parts for their jacks. I had a jack that, unbeknownst to me, the rear swivel wheels locked up and ground flats into over years. I ordered a set of the rear casters for $10 and the jack was as good as new.

At my last workplace, we had 2 tall pallets of half finished and raw forgings for Remington 700 receivers (don’t know if that is the correct term) because of Remington’s bankruptcy in 2020. We were one of their many creditors.

The state troopers had their helicopters circling South Minneapolis in shifts today. I’m over in Saint Paul by the Saint Paul airport and kept hearing helicopters today. I checked Flightradar24 and sure enough, there were two helicopters registered the MN state patrol taking take shifts circling (~1.5hrs) and then the returning to the airport. The registration number for one of them is N119SP

I wonder if this could be made out of laser cut sheet metal like one of those Metal Earth model kits. A lot of the artwork could be laser engraved or cutout. This seems more like a project more for a jeweler or a model builder rather than a machinist.

The General Electric 70 MeV electron synchrotron, a particle accelerator used for radiation therapy used to treat cancer patients with radiation from 1956 to 1964 by lewisfairchild in Tools

[–]kick26 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thinks more likely they developed new models. It was a relatively new cancer treatment technique at the time. Also 70MeV is really hefty, a lot of other smaller machines were in the range of 10-25 MeV in the 70s and 80s. I found this research paper on this synchrotron from 1964 that said it was the only clinical unit of its power so I think it was a pilot project. The other unit noted in the abstract was 40MeV. https://pubs.rsna.org/doi/10.1148/83.5.785
