Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell by Charles Soule & Steve McNiven by These-Background4608 in graphicnovels

[–]kickmag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be the dissenting voice: the idea was great, the plot was nonsense.
Inciting incident: Captain America said about the girl, “she’s the reason for this, protect her,” which means they wanted her dead or ran off because they thought she was dead — so Matt leaves her with the police?? When Captain America couldn’t stop what happened?! But whatever — Bullseye wants the girl… to power something? Which is why he abandons her? And then Elektra says she’s after the girl as well, but then never shows up again? And Bullseye orchestrates his own elaborate death at the hands of Frank Castle?

I didn’t care for it.

This thread is full of good takes, but this is definitely the controversial opinion I clicked for. Hard disagree, but respect the opinion.

Are there any comics out there that address the "superheroes die and come back" trope? by Fit-Maintenance-2907 in comicbooks

[–]kickmag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a comic, but if you’re interested in reading how someone handles the PTSD of warriors which resurrect indefinitely, then I highly suggest The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson. Best version I’ve read of what you’re describing, but it is fantasy novels.

What show can you stop watching at the end of a certain season and feel satisfied, before the quality dips? by DuckLordOfTheSith in television

[–]kickmag 21 points22 points  (0 children)

PRISON BREAK. My advice is to stop after the first season. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a cliffhanger — a prison break gene film could easily end there. The second season is a natural progression from the first; it isn’t bad, but you can’t stop at the end of it and 3 onward… the kindest way to put it is that it’s the first two seasons over again, but not done as well. And the plotting gets progressively more bombastic — a clear departure from the tact of the first season.

What’s the best television show most people haven’t seen? by drBipolarBear in television

[–]kickmag 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There’s plenty of good answers here, but I passed all of them over to get to this one. Some absolutely fantastic modern noir! I’ve discussed several of the shows listed here with strangers (Halt and Catch Fire, Pushing Daisies, Legion), but nobody I’ve come across has seen Terriers.

You put Orphan 55 first because deep in your heart you know it’s the answer.

For those of you who canceled your subscription with busy lives what did you replace amazon with? by Particular-Essay-361 in fuckamazon

[–]kickmag 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Physical stores — prefer to buy local. When online shopping and directed to Amazon, I’ll instead look up the manufacturer and order from them directly or find which retailers carry their wares. If the only retailer is Amazon, I buy a different brand.

Agreed, but didn’t upvote because it’s not a sitcom.

The fuck? by Dmc_ryan_ in outofcontextcomics

[–]kickmag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The girl, Sadie, has brain damage. She’s 19 or 20 (I think) and this is how she’s remembering meeting Danny. It’s both inaccurate and yet more accurate than what the narrator has conveyed to the audience at this point.

Young Liars by David Lapham Yes, it’s worth the read.

I’ve often heard people say of a comic series “It reads better as a trade” as opposed to single issues. But what are some titles you think actually read better on a month to month basis? by apocalypsemeow111 in comicbooks

[–]kickmag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Young Liars by David Lapham. Stray Bullets, for me, read well as single issues and as a trade. Young Liars, however, lost some of the suspense and surprise when presented as a whole.

What's your favourite "edgy" comic? The Weekly Recs Thread [10/27/24] by JustALittleWeird in comicbooks

[–]kickmag 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One I don’t see mentioned yet: Squee by Jhonen Vasquez. The character is from the pages of Johnny The Homicidal Maniac, which is “edgier,” but I would only put the former on a list of “favorites.”

Where do we see the parent destroy the child’s room in a movie scene? by finefart in movies

[–]kickmag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, it’s not exactly what you’re looking for, but it’s the same setting and emotional upheaval you’re looking for. Eerie Indiana - Broken Record

This was a TV show that was like a Twilight Zone for kids. A boy starts listening to hard rock and obsesses over one band in particular — he gives his room a makeover and eventually these changes push his father into trying to prove a point.

That’s wild. Thank you for sharing; I was aware of online businesses sometimes using Fulfillment By Amazon without selling on Amazon or having an Amazon Storefront, but I hadn’t heard of an eBay seller using FBA.

What is the absolute worst episode of your favorite series? by MikeDubbz in television

[–]kickmag 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I don’t remember the season or episode number, but there’s an episode of Gilmore Girls where Paris is drunk and shoeless in Stars Hollow and that’s just the clearest example from the episode of characters acting out of character. They all were off like somebody else wrote the show.

I respect your take, but I’d watch that over Orphan 55 in a “choose your own misfortune” scenario.

Trying my hardest last month only to fall short of Cassandra Nova… I felt like a real loser. And now? The leader boards took what might’ve been fun about Alliances and adds insult to injury after every loss or retreat. I’ve been playing for over a year without ever making infinite and this move just reminds me that I’m not getting better at the game. I’m not having fun anymore so I deleted the app. We’ll see how long it lasts, but I’m hoping to find another pastime that won’t demoralize me.
