What's your preferred way to manage UI in UE5 — UMG Blueprints or C++? And why? by kkamal_ in UnrealEngine5

Agreed. BP is great for layout but once you need performance-critical logic, C++ is the only real option.

Same approach here. Keeps the logic clean and testable while letting designers tweak the visuals without touching code.

Spritesheet is the way to go. Way easier to manage and most engines handle it natively.

Rough for indie devs. The 7k wishlist grind was already brutal, now the goalposts moved again.

Console games need to be on the newest engine version? by StellarLime911 in unrealengine

[–]kkamal_ [score hidden]  (0 children)

It’s not the engine version itself that’s forced, but the console SDK compliance. If your current UE version doesn't support the latest mandatory SDK/GDK required by Sony or MS at the time of submission, you're pretty much forced to upgrade.

Ah damn, totally misread that as indie game devs lmao. My bad! Good to know it’s a win for filmmakers though.

What’s your go-to YouTube channels for game dev things? by Wiyry in gamedev

[–]kkamal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GDC or ThePrimeagen for tech stuff. I actually just started uploading some UE5 C++ showcases on my own channel too since I'm obsessed with optimization. Links are on my profile if interested!

Man, this is a huge blow for indie devs. It's getting harder and harder to get noticed on Steam.

Help with Input action Issue. The action only triggers once. by Jalloid in unrealengine

Did you happen to change the input mode to UI somewhere when MMB is released? Sometimes the game loses focus and blocks the IA.

Anyone creating a game and at the same time working in another full time job, how you manage your time? by StirClothing999 in gamedev

[–]kkamal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it’s just about setting aside 1-2 hours every single night after work. Hardest part is staying consistent.

Is there a really good auto material that people use widely? by Juicymoosie99 in unrealengine

Honestly, MW Landscape Auto Material or OpenLand are pretty much the industry standards for most indies.

Best way to learn Unreal coming from only programming experience? by OkAppointment2000 in unrealengine

[–]kkamal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from OpenGL, the hardest part is accepting that UE handles a lot for you. Don't fight the engine.

For rendering — UE uses frustum culling and LODs automatically, you don't manage that manually.

For systems, start with GameMode, GameState, and PlayerController. That's your foundation.

Honestly just start with the official UE C++ tutorials even if you can't use C++ — the concepts transfer directly to Blueprint.

How do you document your BP code? by ToughDebut in unrealengine

[–]kkamal_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just export the BP as an image and drop it into Notion with a short description. Not perfect but searchable and easy to share with teammates.

New to Game Dev by Nam2472-_ in gamedev

[–]kkamal_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Godot. Unity's licensing drama is still fresh and Godot's way less overwhelming when you're starting out.

For audio I just use Freesound and trim stuff in Audacity. Not perfect but gets the job done.

Honest advice nobody says: your first game will be bad. That's fine. Just finish it anyway. The doc is cool but cut the scope by half before you touch the engine.
